I started watching the Barclay's BPL highlight show on the F*X soccer channel here in the states last year and got completely hooked. The 50 camera angles, the super slow motion replays, the cutting edge advertising (seriously), just the differentness of it. And of course the skill of the athletes, Ronaldo, Rooney, Torres, etc. and the amazing goals and plays - great stuff.

Then the season ended.
Now it's back (or at least I've just noticed)! For how long? Any long time fans have any tips for a noob? Who, what should I be watching for this season?

The premier league season goes from August to May, the more competitive bit being in the new year.

Nice to hear some americans join the football fandom.

I myself am not the biggest fan (prefer rugby, more tough (Y) ) but there is one question which EVERY British person will ask ... what team?

This is not my signature, I have to write this every time I post.

Smile && Nod, it makes it seem like you know what's going on.

Hi nbz, thx. 10 months - whoa, long season. I have missed some highlights :(

Ever been to a match? I went to one here between our local club (Crew) and a visiting club from BPL, West Ham United. It's different live - you will get beer spilled on you. And much faster live.

Brits from as far as the UK in attendance, and damn loud, I mean proud to be here.
I have to say, in the context of our sleepy midwestern city, the sight of a mohawked "hooligan" didn't have the same snap that it probably does in the UK.

AIG, er, I mean Man U. It feels like watching an allstar team, they can score at any time. Rooney and Ronaldo - brilliant.

Since at this point I know pretty much nothing about strategy (run faster) - I enjoy the physical play. Out witting a defender physically, the great pass, making space, a long run, the mad cluster when the ball is in the box - cool stuff.

Man U?

A truly international fanbase on that one.

I've always found it funny that noone who lives in Manchester supports Man U. They all support Man City.

As someone from (near) Manchester, I will call you on that one.

Its a popular misconception spread by the fans of Manchester City. They get away with it because no-one who is not local would historically ever support them. Ofcourse this may change now that they are probably the richest club in the world...

@ Pizmo - From what I can tell, one of the (great?) differences between sports from the UK and the US is the lack of a "time out".

I'm from near Manchester too. In fact, my brother now lives there, so I am fully aware that SOME Manchunians support Man U, but most do support City.

But of course - that explains the advertising. No commercial breaks means they have to find somewhere in the field of vision (the field itself) to put up their slogans. I don't mean that as a dig either, 6 of one, half dozen of the other.
I think the lack of breaks compliments the pace; it has such a different rhythm, love it. Nothing better than when the Euro 2008 was on (and in HD).

I am not as much a fan of International football - it has a different tempo and IMO is more boring.

On the other hand, there are a lot of matches crammed together within a small period of time...

Welcome. English football is my other great passion. I am a Liverpool fan from 1977-present. I adore that sport. Stick with it and you will see matches that will stay with you for the rest of your life (and some will underwhelm you).

Cheers.

Isn't that the truth!

Football is a fascinating sport and a truly global one at that. You'll get blank faces if you try to chat about Joe Montana in Hong Kong or Cape Town but mention Steven Gerrard and you'll get a dozen opinions.

Ok - back at it this season! The *bug* has truly bitten - I am dedicating more time and space on my digital video recorder and my brain for all things Premier League. I have even been known watch Italian and Spanish League when I'm out of taped PBL.

I have to say that watching the teams play each other that are leaning toward relegation is very exciting, though I feel a bit sad being entertained by their desperation.

The best match I've seen so far was this weekend's Liverpool v Chelsea - I missed an earlier Man U v Man City that looked like a real cracker.

ESPN HD has picked up 48 matches this year, very cool.

I even bought... a soccer ball. 2 of them. If I buy boots it will be official *madness.*
