Was this the start of the Alliance?

I just finished Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Shadow" series, which is the story of the other Battle School graduates that return to Earth after defeating the Buggers under the leadership of Ender Wiggin.

The political landscape is volatile and war and political intrigue are everywhere. China has attempted to annex India and all of Southeast Asia, fails, and the old leadership is replaced with the Battle School Emperor Han Tze, The Middle East is united under the Battle School Caliph Alai and India is lead by the charismatic "goddess" and fellow Battle School graduate Virlomi.

The United States,South America, Europe and Africa are making a try of a united world government under Peter Wiggin, Ender's older brother and the genius military leadership of Bean (aka Julian Delphiki), who was Ender's second in command. Confict with China and or the Middle East is inevitable.

The Hegomony, as the US alliance is called, is also starting to colonize other worlds so that the human race doesn't die off if the Earth is destroyed.

Does any of this sound familiar?

I know Orson Scott Card loves Firefly but these 4 books were written before Firefly and among many other things they offer a plausible series of events that could lead to the Exodus of Earth for the stars. I couldn't help but think of Firefly when I was reading them.

What are your ideas on the cause or problems presented by the Exodus? What would happen to those not on the colony ships?

I enjoyed Speaker for the Dead and I have to admit Xenocide and Children of the Mind were hard reads but at the end of COTM it all came together. Too much philosophy and theology until I had my "ahhh" moment.

The Shadow series is more action oriented and an easier read, with Achilles wrecking havoc around the world, Bean trying to rescue Petra from Achilles, while also fighting a war and eventually trying to find the stolen embryos. And I loved Bean's "Mal Moment" with Achilles.

Whenever I watch firefly/serenity I always wonder if everyone did leave earth or did a lot of people stay behind. Would they have survived after most left and they returned to a more simple life. Would earth repair herself or was she too far gone?
Any thoughts on this?

My thoughts are that there had to be people left behind. There is no way the whole population of Earth could fit into the colony ships unless they were very, very large and there were thousands, if not millions of ships.

The first on the ships would be the technicians for terraforming, then the pioneers, then the elite, then the ordinary people that had been persuaded to go. There would also be the diehards that would never go.

The Earth is likely a wasteland but with pockets of people living in caves etc. on s sub-subsistence level. People are resilient and adaptable.
