In the BDM after Mal has just got the wave from Inara,he is on the bridge with the others and Kaylee asks him why he thinks it's a trap.Mal then says, "Do you see a @@X££%"--- TRAP!!!. No matter how many times I have watched it,. I can;t quite make out what he says there. If somebody could fill me in on that I would consider it a kindness.

Don't know his exact words, but it's something along the lines of 'did you see us fight'.

Bingo. Those are the words.
If you wish to hear them in other cuts, the deleted scenes or maybe bloopers have cuts where Nathan changes the enunciation or tone of "Fight!"

How about this question..........

In the BDM, before they pass through Reaver space there are some background sounds and then you hear "Cut them down" shouted as a loud whisper. What is that?

If it is the scene I think you're refering to he wasn't alone. I believe originally he was in there with Inara and they had a scene together, but they decided to cut it to where he was alone.

Funny I had the same thought, so I edited it out before you posted. Thanks for the assist, but do you know what CUT THEM DOWN is all about?

I will have to watch the film again but could it have someting to do with the sounds we heard while they were in Reaver space? Maybe Cut Them down is played on the Reaver Top 40 radio channels.

Now I have a question.....3 of 'em actually. 2 are things that have been bugging me, and the other may be what amounts to a stupid question (they're all regarding the pilot ep):

1st: about 12 min and 20 seconds in, after they've opened the crate and have decided to move along before they run into more Alliance; in the background you hear Jayne and Kaylee talking and I can make out everything but one of Jayne's lines. I'm wondering if anyone can help me out on this....
Jayne- "What the hell they doin' out this far anyhow" Kaylee- "Shinin' the light of civilization" Jayne- " ????? " Kaylee- "Well we're uncivilized." Jayne- "Speak for yourself".... Anyone ever been able to catch what's being said in the "????" portion?

2nd: O.K., maybe I'm naive but I have to ask this anyway. When Jayne is 'interrogating' Dobson, he tells Jayne that if Jayne helps him get River back, he'll get money enough to buy his own ship. Later Jayne tells Mal that he didn't have anything to do with Dobson getting out....am I the only one who believes that?? (this is getting long and I don't know if anyone'll respond to this anyway so I wont put down my arguments about it unless someone responds to this....'cause why argue if no one's gonna argue back).

3rd: (here's what might be a stupid question...no,the one above wasn't the stupid question) When Mal opens the crate and finds River, Simon says "....she's not supposed to wake up for another week. The shock..." Anyone think that she'd have been a liiiiittle less messed up in the brain pan if she'd been alowed to 'cook' for another week?

She was on ice, not cooking. Hopefully 500 years in the future they've solved the problem of freezer burn.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Jayne had given Dobson a little help getting loose (left a little sharp object lying within reach..) just to play both ends. He did later say to Mal that the money wasn't good enough. Enough money to buy your own ship is probably not to be sneezed at, no? So Jayne may have a concience, twisted though it might be logically.

Penguin: There's a new movie out "Morris: A Life With Bells On." It just premiered in Seattle. There is a line in it about Iowa. I thought of you!

Lol, I know she was on ice, I just meant that she wasn't in the box as long as she 'should' have been according to Simon.

That was what made me wonder about the scene and what actually went on and why I'm torn between he did and he didn't.
- If Jayne didn't give him something sharp (or leave it within reach) then where'd he get it.
- The money had to have been pretty good if it was going to be enough to buy his own ship.
- He asks if helping would mean turning on the Captain. When Dobson says 'yes', Jayne doesn't give much of a reaction, except a very faint half smile (not even half, quarter smile) as the scene cuts to Mal and Wash. ......So what does he actually think of betraying the Cpt.?? Because he does seem to have a sense of loyalty to Mal, twisted though it may be, because he does generally follow his orders.
..........I guess now I'm thinking that, as you said, maybe he was playing both sides. If it works I get the money, if it doesn't work then no harm done.
Darn. Jayne's my favorite and I didn't want to think badly about him.....but then again, that's what makes him an interesting character isn't it? He'll do whatever for money, but we know he's sending the money to his momma so he's not all bad....

I've never decided about Jayne/Dobson, always seemed inconclusive either way, like it would be dealt with later.
I have always thought that Mal was part of the cause of River being extra messed up. After so much psych trauma and training, to be wrenched from assuredly dream state (read: nightmares with scary teachers) to full awake, without properly medicated transition, is certainly a good way to make even a normal person fairly psychotic for a while.
Mal had that coming when he screwed with the cryo box. Just like he had a Primary Buffer Panel failure coming when he ignored Kaylee's warnings for 6 months. And sending Simon away just before needing him to patch up Book. Plus a few other choice Mal snafus.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Re: subtitles. I was just going to suggest that. Been watching the epis with my husband (new convert) and he's 71, so watches with subtitles. I learned a LOT of stuff I missed, and I've seen each epi several times, so I highly recommend them, at least one time around. But it's not on the remote button, you have to select it on each individual DVD.

I believe the "cut them down" line was exactly what was suggested; yes, Mal did say "did you see us fight"; and I like the idea of Jayne's idea to let him go so he can do what he wanted to do in the first place.

As for Jayne's loyalty to Mal...have you watched all the epis yet? Don't want to say anything unless you have...

By the way, again re: subtitles. Jim's watching Buffy, too, and I was struck by something: On FF, the lines are spoken virtually always EXACTLY as they appear in the subtitles; on Buffy, what's spoken is almost invariably NOT precisely what's on the subtitles. I found myself wondering if they were looser with their lines there; it's most noticeable. If so, interesting. Are we talking more professional actors v. less professional ones, or the attitude of the director differing between the two series?

i think the differences between the subtitles and what is said is because the subtitles are normally taken from the original shooting script and it could be that they mucked about with the dialogue on buffy more than on firefly and didn't change it on the scripts

Beg to disagree, most politely. Haven't got an example on tap, but there are a lot of errors in the subtitling. Many times, if you've heard a line enough times to understand it, the subtitle will say " Unintelligible" or something that is just plain WRONG, not the words on the soundtrack. Don't know if they got the subtitling from some version of the script, or just did it fast and didn't listen carefully.

Operative: "Its worse than you know..." Mal: "It usually is."

I agree about sub-titles, they are the script lines, and we all know that lines get 'tweeked' during filming. I noticed that myself, I most always watch the DVD's the 2nd time around with subs because I get more out of it that way.

Jayne did help Dobson, Jayne's in it for the MONEY, he is ONLY loyal to that.

Without watching eps again, I don't remember enough exactly to add anymore.

Good questions people!

2 examples:
Pilot, Wash says "Cry Baby Cry" and subtitles say "Lyrics."
Safe, BDH scene, Mal talks about Simon's ability to alienate folk, and subtitle says something like unintelligible.

Not necessarily.

"The money's good enough to buy your own car" is equally relative.

You're probably thinking a nice new EXPENSIVE car, whereas I might be thinking of a used clunker that costs 5% of that.

Mal was able to afford his own ship, but it was a feces-filled death-trap that didn't fly.

I always felt like Jayne decided not to help Dobson more out of a niggling sense of loyalty to Mal (otherwise why would he have even asked if helping Dobson meant turning on Mal?), but strengthened by the fact that the money wasn't amazing. Contrast to "Ariel" where

Select to view spoiler:

Jayne protests at the end that it wasn't like he sold Mal out (by attempting to sell out Simon and River), and Mal says it was.

Jayne does have some (if a very few) scruples.
