CAPTAINAWESOME99

Ni hao and Greetings!

Thank you for taking the time to read this. My name is Jonathon Lundy and I am a Browncoat and graduate student at Boise State University. I am currently researching fandom culture online for completion of my Master's thesis project in Communication. Specifically, I have decided to combine two of my passions, research and Firefly/Serenity, by studying Browncoats.

I need the help of all Browncoats willing to participate!!!! Participation basically entails a casual interview (described below) via chat, IM, phone, or email as a last resort. There may also be some correspondence leading up to the interview and afterward for clarification purposes.

I think this research project is a great way to let your collective voices be heard. Hopefully it will further the Browncoat cause and tell the story to a new audience, inspiring new additions to our ranks!

If you could entertain this notion, I would greatly appreciate it. Just shoot me an email. If not that’s cool too, but I hope you will at least help spread the word for me. Thanks and stay Shiny!

**************Project Description****************
This is a qualitative study of Browncoats, or fans of Joss Whedon’s short-lived television series Firefly and one feature film Serenity. In particular, this study aims to discover, describe, and interpret the specific communicative practices that constitute Browncoat culture. More specifically I hope to identify how primarily virtual cultures and organizations like Browncoats communicatively create and maintain their culture, language, and identity socially using computer-mediated communication. I also intend to investigate how members of this culture utilize both personal narrative and narratives from the official media texts of a television series and one feature film to communicatively construct their fandom experience.

Procedures:
If you agree to take part in this interview, you will be asked about your experiences, interpretations and views regarding Browncoat cultural and organizational practices. This interview will take place at a time and location that is convenient for you. The interview will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Sample questions include:
-When did you first become a fan of the show/movie?
-What makes a Browncoat a Browncoat?
-What is your take on the stories that Browncoats tell and do you participate in Fan fiction?
-How do people become Browncoats?
-What about the show/film caught your interest and what inspired you to become involved in fan activity?
