Shit, I beat 'em to the punch years ago, when NationsBank told me they wanted a $4 "service charge" if I wanted to walk into the lobby to deposit my paycheck into MY account. Seems interacting with a human, on any level, is grounds to charge you more of your money for letting them use your money in the first place.

As luck would have it, a local credit union representative came by my workplace that day, offering to open up their credit union for any of us who wanted to join. I opened an account that day, then closed my NationsBank account the next day, and have never looked back.

That was well over a dozen years ago, and some of those same people are still working at the credit union, and they still say "Hi, Mike. How have you been?" when I walk in the door. Kinda nice, really.

This goes for everything - Keep it local as much as you can, ESPECIALLY when it doesn't cost you anything to do so!

Yes, impressive.

What really surprises me is how many people get the source of the financial meltdown and a lot of its implications. And also, that our elected officials, almost all, seem blissfully unaware of how patently obvious that *this* (and the war) are what's leading to their plummeting poll numbers. Of course, the puppetmasters probably have a limitless supply of marionettes lined up to replace them with

Not necessarily, no more than they have an unlimited supply of shock troops, in fact the latter are gettin kinda thin because of the shorter span of usefulness and inherent disposability...

Standard tactics, you don't fight the swarm, you cut the supply line that produces it - which is why our current efforts on education are a one-two punch on this front.

Think of it like a water leak in your kitchen, you can mop the floor till the cows come home and accomplish utterly nothing, but get to the valve and shut it off....
