1. Out of Gas
2. Serenity
3. Jaynestown

OOG - Seriously one of my favorite episodes - you learn about how the crew came together, where he got the ship, more insight into Mal's character, and the fact that it's told out in and out of the current time with flash backs. A very well done episode.

Serenity - The cornerstone of the series. Just one of my favorite episodes. You get to see what the verse is about - the mixing of Chinese and American cultures, a small cut of the war, the socio-economic inequalities, etc. It's one of the best series premieres of any sci fi show I've seen.

Jaynestown - Jayne. The man they call Jayne! He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor. Stood up to the man and he gave him what for. Our love for him now ain't hard to explain, the Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!

What are yours?

Hell, those two were in serious consideration...

Imma change the rules here- these are my favourites:

Serenity
The Train Job
Our Mrs Reynolds
Jaynestown
Out of Gas
Ariel
War stories
The Message
Objects in Space

Y'all can't keep me to three (it's hard to keep it under 10). Easier to ask, what's the eps that AREN'T your favourites... Bushwacked. It sucks compared to the others IMO (which still makes it better than most TV anyway).
Firefly didn't have the time nor inclination to have a "Spock's Brain," so I'll call Bushwacked their "Day of the Dove." Quality-wise, that is.

FEARTHEBUNNYMAN

Serenity - b/c, duh
Ariel - A-team! Genius plans! WashandZoe-dance! (sort of) Jayne gets hit on the head with a wrench!
Safe - the episode as a whole fits together sort of oddly, but it was full of awesome moments - Simon climbing up on the stake with River (tear), the Big Damn Heroes, River-dance, Shepherd Book wtf moment, Jayne hanging out of the ship with the big gun, the flashbacks (one with tiny efron - lol'd first time i saw that) and of course, the Hodgeberries.

THESOMNAMBULIST

Objects in Space - Profound, thoughful and well it gave us Richard Brooks (Jubal Early) in one of the great character roles from Firefly.

Out of Gas - Great pacing from David Solomon, with a superbly written teleplay by Tim Minear, and clever camera and editing makes this episode brilliant and classy TV.

Ariel - On reflection this episode has great production value. It looks the money. The focus on Simon, River and Jayne is highly entertaining. Want more.......

1. Our Mrs Reynolds-coz it's got the funniest lines
2. Out of Gas-it tells you who's who and what's what
3. War Stories-gives you a different look at the interactions and I love it with the commentary

my favourite scene however is out of Ariel, the one where Jayne gets knocked out and put in the airlock. It gives us an acute look at the scary Mal.

JONGSSTRAW

1. Our Mrs. Reynolds - simply an exceptionally entertaining episode with lots of sarcasm and biting wit.

2. Shindig - I'm just a sucker for a pretty girl in a fancy dress. Love the 2 Badger scenes, the floating chandelier, and the hot cheese.

3. Serenity / Train Job (tie) - Both episodes give great insight into the character and nature of the Captain and crew. The returning of the medicine scene with the Sheriff still gets me a tad choked up even after all these years.

Those are my top three. It's a good thing this is a top three list. Top episode and even top two is too difficult to come up with for me.

But, wasn't Bushwacked kinda lacking IYO? The Simon stuff was good, but the Reaver reasoning sort of done on the fly, not consistent with their origin IMO.

Expired, forgotten, spoiled rotten.

Chrisisall, Buchwacked is in my top three. Sure, the guy going crazy doesn't quite make sense with how the movie explains the reaver's origins, but the interview scenes are classic. I feel like it was the first episode that really fleshed out each character beyond what was established by the pilot. Its also in there because it was the first episode I ever saw (I was a week late to the party and missed the train job).

However, I do agree with something you've implied. Favorite episode threads come up all the time. How about a least favorite episode thread?

Which Reaver reasoning? Never seen anything about that, interesting.

I think Bushwacked is underrated sometimes, not a great ep but not as low as some suggest.

It gave us:

- hoop ball! That's a pretty great opening.
- underscored the "dangers of space," which helps inform following eps like Out of Gas + added to that the very real, gothic horror element of the Reavers (not just camp fire stories).
- Aliens! I swear that Reaver booby trap looked like a living creature (yeah, I know what JW has said).
- the interrogation sequences are good character studies, "Ever been with a warrior woman?"
- and another puzzle piece in Book's back story, his Ident Card rushing him to the head of the line (hmmm!).

My top 3:

Out of Gas - most complete from beginning to end - it covers so much ground it almost feels like a 2 hour ep. Great back story telling. Inara & Mal's first meeting, sparring, the cold spark of things to come.

Jaynestown - I'm in awe of the pure imagination, how original this ep feels. What an improbable story that rings true, and a perfectly ironical plot for Jayne. I thought this was an example of the great minds JW had collected around him and was a sign of equally great things to come... how he would be giving us the unexpected. (In terms of originality Objects in Space is a match for Jaynestown).

Our Mrs Reynolds - ok, make that 3 matches, stories that didn't feel derivative, wholly unique to this new 'Verse. And it has the best chunk of dialogue/performances of all the eps imho - forward to right after the first commercial break when everyone is in the cargo bay discussing Saffron- brilliant.

WEICHI

I always make a "best" and a "favorite" distinction.

Best is hard to argue with, IMHO,
Serenity - The Introduction to our World
Out of Gas - The History of our World
Objects in Space - The Heart of our World

Favorite is impossible to argue with, mine is actually War Stories. Also Jaynestown makes my list because it was the episode where I went from wanting to love the show to loving the show. My third is probably Serenity, although Our Mrs Reynolds and Out of Gas are hard to leave out.

See how I'm not hitting him, I think I've grown!
