* Theory is that sugar fuels tumors

People who drink two or more sweetened soft drinks a week have a much higher risk of pancreatic cancer, an unusual but deadly cancer, researchers reported on Monday.

People who drank mostly fruit juice instead of sodas did not have the same risk, the study of 60,000 people in Singapore found.

"The high levels of sugar in soft drinks may be increasing the level of insulin in the body, which we think contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth," Pereira said in a statement.

Insulin, which helps the body metabolize sugar, is made in the pancreas.

Writing in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, Pereira and colleagues said they followed 60,524 men and women in the Singapore Chinese Health Study for 14 years.

Over that time, 140 of the volunteers developed pancreatic cancer. Those who drank two or more soft drinks a week had an 87 percent higher risk of being among those who got pancreatic cancer.

Pereira said he believed the findings would apply elsewhere.

"Singapore is a wealthy country with excellent healthcare. Favorite pastimes are eating and shopping, so the findings should apply to other western countries," he said.

High fructose corn syrup contains mercury and is mostly GMO.

Phosphoric acid is used for cleaning toilets and pipes.

Fluoride is a standard ingredient in water, colas and Prozac.

My guess is Pancreatic overload from HFCS, but I am not a doctor - still good points, although there ARE sodas made without that shit, if you look hard enough.

Were it not for the HFCS (and I am not sure floridated water is used in all soft-drinks, John), a little cola every once in a while would be good for ya.

All things in moderation, and all that rot.

I managed to avoid a caffeine addiction up to the point I went to college. Then you pretty much have to have it to survive.

I don't drink real soda. HFCS is gross. I drink the crap with Aspartame instead, and I'm sure I can look forward to some poorly understood type of chemically caused cancer or another.

Locally brewed sodas might be safe in regards to stuff put in it (no HFCS maybe), unless you live in an area that fluoridates water.

I just don't drink sodas, period. Nothing good in it and often lots bad. Never did like Coke, but after seeing what it does to a penny (!), I just avoid sodas any way I can. Nowadays that's tons easier than it used to be, what with all the flavored waters and juices!

I drink two eight ounce cans a day, which is enough to give me heart palpitations and make it so I can feel my heart beat in my kidneys.

I know that's actually not much, so I figure it's a low body weight/sensitivity thing.

I actually probably should get away from sugar and caffeine, as much as possible, but now I'm working on five hours a sleep a day. Mostly because my hours are horrible.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

BYTE: Did anyone tell you that lack of sleep kills more, quicker, than any amount of soda??

And that, combined with stress, will do in your immune system?

So now you can lay awake, stressing about stress and lack of sleep!

But seriously, BYTE, I've been sleep-deprived over the long-term. It ain't good for you. It'll take years offa your life. Don't care how you do it, but get more sleep, m'kay?

I have 3-4 cans a week. But I used to drink 2 litres a day, so I think I've improved.

I'm more concerned about the aspartame than the sugar. I don't care for sugar in any form really, but the real sugar would probably be best if you feel you need it. I still drink a little caffeinated tea in the morning and that might be an alternative for you if you are looking for something to keep you awake. You could add a drop or two of stevia for sweetening if you had concerns about any form of sugar. Also, there are many varieties of cold tea's on the market these days.

Having said all that I still find myself drinking one or two caffeine free/real sugar soda's a week. I like the carbonation. It gives me a zing. :) Still working on that one.

I hope your work situation resolves itself so you can have more reasonable hours, and get more sleep!

As a hilarious side note, sometimes when I'm at work writing notes down on paper, I fall asleep, and I wake up to find I somehow kept writing WHILE asleep. There are words, roughly legible words, that make no sense in context.

Like just now, I was looking over a lab report, and I just noticed one of my notes... "Data Qual looks goo-, ma-ch w/ with * in Inara's gthe regimen."

God only knows. I think the last part is Firefly related.
