The Chemist's War
The little-told story of how the U.S. government poisoned alcohol during Prohibition with deadly consequences.
http://www.slate.com/id/2245188/pagenum/all/

Of course, this article didn't mention another aspect of it, which was Gov ringers and plants deliberately introducing moonshine with toxic levels of similar crap in an effort to stir public sentiment against moonshiners during the same era, something many of my more distant relatives are still pretty pissed off about, since the make-you-go-blind stuff was almost exclusively produced (or rather simply poured into new bottles by) agents provacateur.

And gee, wasn't it one of our own posters (lookin at YOU, "Hero"!) who suggested "poisoning the dope", not all that bloody long ago, while seemingly ignorant of the fact that most of it probably gets here via our own alphabet agencies cause without it and the "War on (some) Drugs" both they and Big Pharma might have a little trouble justifying their existence ?

Insanity is doin the same thing over and over and expecting different results, did we learn NOTHING from Prohibition, then ?

Yeah, I remember the scare. I also remember the pros being able to test their product- only the poorest street level users really had to worry.
You know, the expendable peeps.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

They denature bulk industrial ethanol to this very day. When we need PURE ethanol for analysis we have to be very careful about what we buy, otherwise we do find IPA or other denaturants (which show up as contaminants in the analysis).

It's true to this day that moonshine is dangerous. Atlanta hospitals get about 4 patients/ week (usually on the weekend) of lead poisoning caused by moonshine distilled in lead-soldered equipment.
