I got the bug to refresh myself in browncoat goodness the other day and while I was re-watching the season DVD for the umpteenth time it struck me that I was at a college, with 30,000 people, there has to be some browncoats hiding out organized or maybe not so much. So through the best "all-call" that I could accomplish, I managed to find 18 very hardcore fans in the span of like a day and a half (can't stop the facebook group signal).

Anyway started talking about how to reach any other fans that aren't friends of friends here at college. And the consensus was on a screening. Now, I know a lot of the big screenings are tied to charities and the like, and we'd love to do that but we don't want to put the cart before the horse. However, if anyone has experience with the legalese of showing Serenity (either in a local theatre we could rent out) or in a school auditorium, in a non-profit type setting and also not have Fox send the two by two hands of blue after me, I would really appreciate your enlightenment.

Rule #1 with FF screenings, we never mention FF screenings.

I think what he means is that the movie Serenity is owned by Universal. There are rules governing a public screening. But if you follow those rules, rights can be obtained to show Serenity the movie.
Firefly is still owned by Fox. And they pulled the plug on any & all public screenings of their properties. So nobody is allowed to screen Firefly episodes or Buffy's Once More with Feeling in a public place.
I think what PN is trying to say is that if you intend to publicly screen a Fox-owned show, better not mention it on the boards or shout it from the rooftops.

Does your college have an on-campus movie theater? That would be the best way to go. Even if they only show second run films, they should still have a contact at Universal. Just be sure they don't claim to be part of the Can't Stop the Serenity screenings. The charity has arranged special licensing prices & it would be really bad karma to try and piggyback on their event.

I think you're on the right track. A public screening would be a fantastic way to meet more Browncoats. They can be elusive until you give them a chance to show they're mighty.

You might also try the cantstoptheserenity.com website for advice. There is a section in their forum for non-CSTS talk. Some of the folks there have been organizing screenings for several years & could possibly help you out.

Good luck!

Thanks for the insight and yes, I had meant a Serenity screening. Had one of those moments where I knew what I was talking about and forgot to... express a full thought. lol. I appreciate the feedback, and yeah I have no intent to step on anyone's toes, particularly the wonderful folks over at Cant Stop The Serenity.

Not sure I understand why not just have a CSTS screening?

Print a batch of membership cards for "Serenity Alliance" or some such non-existent "club".
http://www.easyidcard.com

"Give them away" at the front door for a meager "donation", for "private membership" in the "club".

Then it's not a "public screening" and not "for profit".

Same legal situation as sitting in your living room with friends and family.

If Fox sends the Hands of Blue, just shoot em.

Maybe print your own monopoly money for barter?
