"So, I graduated from a really good school, got a job that makes really good money, got a really nice house, and a really nice wife, had some really healthy kids, bought a really cool ride (with lots of cup-holders), and got lots of respect from my colleagues.
My wife has her tennis coaches, I have my $1000 a night ladies, my kids have their tutors, and our dogs have their walkers.
All so happy.
I vote the way my friends do (unless there's a deal I can be in on), and life is so simple.
War? Depends on the target. Saddam was a model.
Taxes? Bad, always bad, unless it's good.
Abortion? Whatever.
Education? Take care of your own.

See, life is what you make it."

Hey, it worked for me - albeit it kind of occurred in Kindergarten.

Nahh, just a fictional American story, that.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I always hated those values. They were my parents' and they didn't make sense to me. Yes, I'm as given as anyone else to acquiring "things", but I could never see spending tons of money on furniture--it's for sitting on. The concept of thousands of dollars for a sofa eludes me.

Our cars have always been used, our house pretty funky, and that's fine with me. As for husbands and wives, Jim had one of "those" his first time out, who put him down because he didn't raise their social standing enough. I always told him "do what makes you happy, we'll get by" and always worked myself...it just made sense that way.

I think those values have been going out of style more and more since the '50s...or I guess at least I'd LIKE to think so. Yuppies still abound tho' (I know, they bought in when our neighbors got older, and I see the nannies pushing babies every day), so I'm probably just a cockeyed optimist.

"I'm just right. Kinda like the sun rising in the east and the world being round...its not a need its just the way it is." The Delusional "Hero", 3/1/10

wow, you have articulated the longings of my soul. stuff, status, and fear. whats not too like? life is absolutely meaningless, so you might as well lord it over your fellow man. ;)

is this stuff making you misanthropic, or are you embracing it as a symptom of your misanthropy?

We're all gonna have to simplify our lives some (Maybe not you Niki, sounds like you're there before the rest of us) in tune with the new global economy. Used furniture, fix your car as opposed to the new-one-every-5-year thing, Salvation Army for some clothes...
Consume less & recycle more.
I made my bicycle out of parts of broken bikes waiting to be thrown out at my condo- one new inner tube is all I purchased. A bike for $5.95. AND, less garbage for the landfill/ocean.

We don't have any other planets to live on yet...

BYTEMITE

Selfishness and materialism have been around quite a while. Judging by the silly childishness and emotional immaturity and shallowness of my generation, it's only going to get worse. But then, they've been groomed to be that way.
