Lotta nonsense been shoveled back and forth on this forum over the years. Got no notion to think that it'll stop any time soon, either. But I'll leave all that be, for my part, at least.

So, when discussing the President, I'll be clear. I don't care for him, or his policies. That's plainly understood, I believe, by most here. But what I also don't like are bogus, distorted or fabricated claims folks toss out, on both sides, so as to distract from the bigger, more important issues.

Recently I heard again, I reckon because it's Easter, that Obama STILL hasn't chosen a church to attend. The clear intimation that he's not a " sincere " Christian, a true believer, and therefore, a closet, radical muslim.

Folks who say such things are clogging up the airwaves, and the debate, by diverting attention away from the issues. I believe Jesus said..."
they will choke on a gnat and swallow a camel whole
". ( My first and last quoting of Jesus - thank you )

Ronald Reagan rarely attended formal services either. He never had a regular church which he'd attend. He routinely had services at the White House, if I recall correctly.

Now, Obama DID attend a regular church for over 20 years, but that was in Chicago, not D.C. Things are different now, and it's understandable that most in the position of Chief Executive would avoid attending a regular service, with the wife and kids, along w/ the security detail and fuss it would cause. NOT attending a church is a gnat on the camel's tail, imo.

Well spoken, Raptor! Gino, you're right, it doesn't matter in the greater scheme of things and shouldn't, but it's unfortunately something those who are very religious and very conservative can grab onto to make an issue out of. Raptor's right, it's absoultely absurd and diverts people from the true issues at hand, but it is a reality in many countries, America among them.

Any subject can be turned into a talking point to diminish someone...the time is such that this one is handy. It'll be something else tomorrow.

As an non believer, I can only offer my views as such.

I don't need to agree with a politician ( or anyone, for that matter ) when it comes to religion, for me to find them trustworthy , honest or respectable. Joe Lieberman, for example, seems to " walk the walk ", just as does Mitt Romney. Yet, when folks wear religion on their sleeve, as an attempt to placate or attract a voter base, then it raises my ire. If they really are that enthusiastic and true to their religious views, though I may not agree with them, I won't dismiss that person, out of hand. I'm not immediately set off by another's love for their god/gods.

It takes time for those folks to piss me off. Usually.

To my discredit, I am suspicious of believers, and tempted to dismiss them out of hand. Perhaps a vestige of having a president who thought god ordered him to liberate the Iraqis? I dunno.

I agree, and of course I know I have a bias against organized religion as such, but I don't hold it against anyone, and as far as I'm concerned, if one's religion makes one a better person, then it's a GOOD thing. My problem has always been that most religions give a person a "god" to look to, and people in power who supposedly speak for that god so the person can look to them for absolution no matter what they do. Especially Christianity, as one can lead the life of a villain and "confess" at the last moment and go to heaven. That concept leaves me just furious and disgusted.

I'm not sure to whom you're referring with "when folks wear religion on their sleeve, as an attempt to placate or attract a voter base". I'm guessing you're not talking about Obama...do you mean the religious right, or someone specific?

It's a fact of life that in America religion is taken seriously and is as divisive as, sometimes moreso than, politics. All we can do is ignore it if it doesn't touch us, I think.

I think it's absurd that they want to point to Obama as a Muslim, but given all the other things they've pulled out of the hat, does it really surprise you?

Frem said something in another thread that really touched on this, I'll have to find it. Something about following what he believes is RIGHT, irregardless of laws, etc.--which I think should hold true for religion, too.

Oh, for all you American types, per the Census...

I received and filled out my 10 question form, and sent it back over 2 weeks ago. ( This after gettiung the PRE-Census letter, and then the POST Census post card.....).

So, what arrives in the mail a couple of days ago ?

Another U.S. Census form. : /

So, should I fill it out, again , and count myself twice ? Seriously, there was no " please fill out question ___ , so your form can be processed promptly ". It was just a whole different form, sent to the exact same address as the last one, no note, nothing extra.

*is a FED Agent Census Enunerator (flashes crappy plastic no-picture badge).... for about one more day.*

-Did both forms look identical?

-Did they both say they were from the U.S Dept. of Commerce - Economics and Statistics Admin. - U.S Census Bureau?

-There are other Gov't agencies doing Census stuff, Dept. of Agriculture is one.

-There are also scams out there. THE Census will NOT ask for your S.S.#, or any financal questions. And will NOT ask/demand money.

If both forms are legit, you only need to fill out/send back ONE.

Hope that helps.

contrary to citizen's unique sartorial sense, women's clothing is designed by women, for women, and evidence that men don't need to objectify and exploit women, so long as women are more than willing to do it on their own.

that said, women never, ever have to wear ties.

I personally consider myself a secular humanist, only because the nut cases have claimed the atheist title and made atheism look like any other fundamentalist religion. I really don’t care if Obama loves or hates Jesus. I did find it funny though that in his Easter address after recognizing the true meaning of Easter he felt it necessary to give a shout out to the Jews, Muslims and non-believers. I’m surprised he left out the Romans.

Unfortunately, this lead to the invention of high heels, which as it turns out are a deadly weapon in their own right.

I don’t think so, Mincing. If you check, I think you’ll find the majority of fashion designers are men and always have been. However, I DO agree with you wholeheartedly about ties....it’s always fascinated me (slightly) that women’s fashions can be so dramatic, yet men are stuck with suits and ties! Never seems to change except in minor details, and always seemed unfair to me. I was tickled when Jim got a job where he didn’t have to wear a suit and tie; he immediately tossed them all out and we celebrated!

Byte; cute crack, but I don’t believe it. Men have always been more violent than women in modern history and as a whole, tho’ women play dirtier, it’s been my observation. On high heels, tho’ (hee, hee, hee, I mistyped that initially “high hells”...hmmm), I do agree. The only one of three times in my life I’ve ever been deliberately violent was a guy who got ugly with me; used to wear 6” spiked heels (figured at 6’ tall, what difference did it make), and I put one right through his shoe (and big toe). Solved the problem immediately. If it weren’t for the fact that you can’t run in them, they’d be a great weapon on a date!

Frem: LOVED the photo. That man can wear anything and look sexy.

Well, almost anything

But yes, I wish we’d retained some of the older fashions for men, they were much more imaginative and neat.

Satan as far as I know is based on the fertility and harvest god Baal and an earlier snake god.

Recently, popularized by Paradise Lost, Lucifer and Satan have been thought to be one and the same. Lucifer was offended that humanity was not forced to obey God's will, as the angels had to obey, and God thus gave Lucifer free will, which Lucifer used to attack God, and Lucifer and his underlings were cast out of heaven.

God was a master of the Batman Gambit. Giving Lucifer free will, he knew exactly what Lucifer would choose to do with it, and so it all followed the divine plan, giving humanity a choice between God's offered salvation and Lucifer's vengeful attempts at temptation and sin. According to Milton, anyway.

Before his insurrection, Satan was among the highest of all angels and the "brightest in the sky". His pride is considered a reason why he would not bow to God as all other angels did, but sought to rule heaven himself. The popularly held beliefs that Satan was once a prideful angel who eventually rebels against God, however, are barely portrayed explicitly in the Bible and are mostly based on inference (e.g., Ezekiel 28). In mainstream Christianity he is called "the ruler of the demons" (Matt. 12:24), "the ruler of the world" and "the god of this world". (2 Cor. 4:4). The Book of Revelation describes how Satan will be cast out of Heaven, down to the earth, having "great anger" and waging war against "those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus". Ultimately, Satan is thrown into the "lake of fire" (Revelation 20:10), not as ruler, but as one among many, being tormented day and night for all eternity.

From wikipedia.

"Brightest in the sky", aka "Lucifer", also known as "Light-bringer".
