Just my opinion, but I think the solution to the illegal problem (or at least a start) is this.

1. Shut down the border. Noone can come into America (by car or foot anyways) for at least 6 months. Unless they are a verified citizen.

2. The border states need to call up the local militias, as well as the National Guard to patrol and protect the towns and areas closet to Mexico.

3. Leave the Arizona law in place. Expand it to the other border states.

4. Allow all US citizens in these border states to carry concealed, without a permit. Institute the Castle Doctrine.

5. Fine and/or shut down any company that knowingly hires illegals (especially if their workforce is more than 50% illegals)

6. Make English the national language.

7. Anyone caught as an illegal, should first be checked for any crimes they may have commited while here, punished, then sent back over.

8. Tell Mexico that if they want our help in regaining control, we will use all our military might to do so. (If we can do it in Iraq, we can do it on our own borders.)

9. Let it be common knowledge that non-citizens do NOT have the same protections as citizens.

10. Anyone harboring, or renting to, groups of illegals can face severe penalties.

Its a start. Im not sure if all of these will work, and I know that folks may have better ideas. If you do, I'd like to hear them.

So you're saying martial law is a START?

If this is truly a "national crisis", shouldn't those measure be undertaken in every state, every city, every town, and every home?

I guess it's refreshing to see the mask finally come off those on the right, who claim to be all about "human rights" - as long as those humans are white and American...

By the way, have you ever actually BEEN to the US-Mexico border? How exactly do you propose closing a border thousands of miles long with no natural barriers?

Won't that bring business to a screeching halt? How much of that traffic is tourism, transportation of products, etc? Why not include air travel, though?

How is that related to illegal immigration?

Sounds reasonable.

6. Make English the national language.

How will that stop illegal immigration?

They don't do that already? Whoa.

Just what are you proposing, practically? That Mexico invites the US Army to shoot Mexicans trying to leave Mexico illegally? That's worse than what East Germany did. At least there it was East German soldiers shooting GDR citizens trying to leave the country illegally.

or what do you mean by regaining control?

9. Let it be common knowledge that non-citizens do NOT have the same protections as citizens.

If that is so, isn't that already common knowledge?

Does the word "knowingly" fit in there, or should everyone check that their guestsor tenants are legal?

Rather than get into some long-winded debate about what in my opinion are some mostly-stupid ideas, I will let Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert speak for me, in their usual most eloquent styles. As usual, they present the issue in the clearest terms possible:

I like Stephen's solution at the end; I think all Arizonans should DO IT! And I mean SERIOUSLY! If people of conscience did that, or dressed as illegals as suggested Mike I believe, the problem would be solved in a hurry!

Well, a full-on genocide against Hispanics would have your desired result as well. Is that what you endorse?

Your position here is beyond ludicrous. You're rapidly approaching Rappy levels of stupidity on this issue. He's the one who tried to lay out the false dichotomy of "if you're against this, then you're clearly FOR having completely open borders, rapists, drug runners and thugs running around freely doing whatever they please". That's paraphrasing his exact words, but not by much. It really was just that stupid a comparison.

So if we don't support everything you've proposed, we have NO ideas at all, eh?

Funny, I couldn't SWORN you were blathering about "smaller government" and less intrusive government just a few short weeks ago, and how the libertarians and tea-baggers were all about personal freedom and the liberty our forefathers fought for.

Color me not surprised in the least that you really have no interest in those ideas, and that you hold that ONLY citizens are created equal, NOT that flowery-language "all men" that the founders claimed.

So in your little mind, "human" rights really only apply to AMERICAN humans, right?

The solution? Comprehensive Federal immigration reform. It's been called for--even by DUMBYA--for years; the lack of it is being complained about by Republicans, and has been for years. Yet the Republicans are intent on blocking anything to do with it currently.

You want a solution? Talk to the Republicans and get them to act as they speak.

End of story.

You hear calls of "racist"? You don't think targeting a SPECIFIC RACE isn't racist? You don't think going directly against the Constitution's provisions of CIVIL RIGHTS with respect to a SPECIFIC RACE is racist? Nobody here has called you a racist, but even hard-core right-wingers ARE calling the law racist. Check out the Jon Stewart video.

On top of which, this is a direct corollary to what was done to African Amerians before and during the Civil Rights era. If you think denying Hispanics their civil rights is different than denying those of African Americans, you have problems understanding the term "racist".

The law won't stand. Challenges are already happening, and it can't stand up to them. Civil rights are civil rights, and the first citizen accosted will sue.

Well, god-fucking-dammit...

I just spent my entire lunch hour typing out a point-by-point response, including some that I actually AGREE with Wulfie on, and then hit one key wrong, and - POOF! - it's vanished, vamoosed into the ether never to be found again...

SHIT!

Anyhoo, I'll get back to it later tonight. Lunch hour's done.

I'll leave with this: Wulfie, just because you're simple doesn't mean solutions will be. There are problems WITHOUT easy solutions. There IS no 100% completely effective solution, unless you want to just nuke the entire border area to take out every living thing in it, just to be sure. Heck, at least it would be a more fair meting out of justice...

I propose the following solutions:

1. There is no solution that 'Merica can effect on its own. Folks hop the border because life in Mexico is awful, and life as a despised illegal in 'Merica marginally less so. As long as Centra and South Ameria are a proud bastion of third world poverty (in part because of our economic policies), and as long as we are happy to exploit the cheap labor of illegals, they will have an incentive to come here. No fence, and no amount of force, will change this. Any solution must take into account economic development of our neighbors, and our own lust for cheap wages.

2. Learn Spanish

3. Abandon antiquated, racist, sexist, misogynistic concepts of borders and nations and embrace the NEW WORLD ORDER! Recognzie the sovereignty of the UN.

all of these suggestions are of, coruse, in jest, but for the following:

4. Immediate nuclear war.

The only answer that can be found... is to roll over and play dead.

I mean, its ALL our fault that mexico is SOOO terrible that they come here and make it just like Mexico.

So, my ideas are raciss, and we should just hope that our new Mexi overlords forgive us for the sins of our forfathers. (Supossidly)

You are willing to accept only 100% perfect solutions (which yours are not); that's your problem, not the country's.

You don't like the real world, we already know that; so go back to your fantasy one for 100% solutions.

no, the solution wouldn't be to roll over and play dead (though if you were to, i would play along and bury you), but rather to find a way to make illegal immigration less attractive to the immigrants, and their potential employers. this will require us to address our addiction to cheap labor, at the very least.

gosh, you are just such a racist.

While also ignoring what illegals do while here. You know, rape, murder, drunk driving, theft, kidnapping, child rape, ect.

No. You are right.

Give them more rights, embrace them even.

Its only because of the terrible geo-political situation they are in that makes them act this way!

Okay, now I CAN call you racist. If you'd bothered to say "some illegals", I couldn't, but given you want to lump them all into that category; yup, racist asshole. Go for it.

I disagree, Pizmo. I think this is going to raise such a horrendous stink and so many lawsuits that it won't stand for long; given almost the first words out of the Gov's mouth, it looks to me like this was deliberately done to push the federal government to come up with comprehensive immigration reform. It may do that, despite the Republicans, we'll just have to see. But scare people out of crossing the border? I seriously doubt it. After all, if caught they're just sent back to what they left, so why not come in the first place and give it a try?

the cold, hard facts on the ground, and economic desperation and so forth, have nothing to do with why people would be willing to risk life and limb to come here to work for pennies. no, people risk life and limb and break the law, because they want to rape and rob us once they get here. that is the motivation for illegal immigration, and the only solution to the problem: bullets. anyone to suggest otherwise is a naive pussy.

There are 10's of thousand Mexicans that cross the border into U.S. to work legally. They live in Mexico, but are hired in The U.S. legally. Just as there are U.S. citizens that work in foreign countries legally. If you close the borders, you put legal people out of work and businesses will lose experienced and loyal employees. Then there are also the U.S. citizens who won't be able to cross and they will lose their work. It is a two way street. The U.S. has factories in Mexico that have U.S. citizens working at them. How long do you think Mexico will tolerate their citizens being burdened without retaliating against U.S. citizens?

By the way, Wulfie, your premise - "If you don't have any solutions, you agree with mine!" - doesn't really play.

I can ask you, would you rather have me kill your wife, or your daughter? If you can't choose, I'll kill both, and by your not choosing, that shows you agree with my choices. It's a bullshit choice, because it's not a choice at all.

Point being, there are LOTS of really shitty proposals out there, and choosing none of them might be an option while we look for something better.

But I see you've resorted to your last defense, posting up vidclips, which shows you're done discussing and have nothing left to say, so I doubt I'll spend the time trying to retype my point-by-point response to your original post, since you don't really want to discuss it anyway.

I am curious, though: Why do you search for a way to make EVERY issue a gun issue? What does open carry or concealed carry have to do with immigration? Do you just need a gun involved to get interested in things? Are you that hard up to shoot someone? I know you mentioned earlier that I might end up shot full of holes. Is that some fantasy of yours, shooting people full of holes? Or is it just "hippie libs", since you don't consider them people?

But no, that makes too much fucking sense, does it ?

If the McCarthyists and other hardcase lunatics didn't make LEGAL immigration all but impossible*, maybe this problem wouldn't be so bad - streamline the process and hand em a damn W2, then sic the IRS on em and make em earn their fuckin money doing something other than squeezing us little people, since they can't be bothered to shake down the corporate empires, grrr..

Just for those who don't go to the link:
Quote:

The state has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants. But contrary to myth, they have not brought an epidemic of murder and mayhem with them. Surprise of surprises, the state has gotten safer.

Over the last decade, the violent crime rate has dropped by 19 percent, while property crime is down by 20 percent. Crime has also declined in the rest of the country, but not as fast as in Arizona.

Babeu’s claim about police killings came as news to me. When I called his office to get a list of victims, I learned there has been only one since the beginning of 2008—deeply regrettable, but not exactly a trend.

Truth is, illegal immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native Americans. Most come here to work, and in their desire to stay, they are generally afraid to do anything that might draw the attention of armed people wearing badges.

El Paso, Texas, is next door to the exceptionally violent Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and easily accessible to illegal entry. Yet it is one of the safest cities in the United States.

In 2007, scholars Ruben Rumbaut and Walter Ewing investigated the issue for the Immigration Policy Center and concluded that “if immigrants suddenly disappeared and the country became immigrant-free (and illegal-immigrant free), crime rates would likely increase.”

Well, truth be told, Texas has always been a red state.

You know, clinging to their guns and religion.

Most Mexis know not to mess with Texas...or Texans in general.

Arizona? Not so much.

Boy, were you born full of shit, or did you get that way chugging down the turd they call the Republican party line?

Texas has only recently been considered a "red" state. Hell, even Phil Gramm was a Democrat, until the Reagan era.

As for your idiotic claim about "Mexis" knowing not to mess with Texas, you really don't get much in the way of news up there, do you. Texas has had its own problems along the border. We just haven't gone all dipshit-redneck about it. Yet, anyway. Give Rick "Goodhair" Perry time, and I'm sure he'll get a hard-on about it.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

I wonder if it is worth thinking about this in global terms rather than an USA/Mexican thing, as it is a global phenomenon. What we are currently seeing is huge numbers of 'illegal immigrants' who may be political refugees or economic migrants. Kind of a symptom of a world that has vastly different political and economic states that often exist side by side.

People are always going to try to do the best for themselves and their families, and that often means leaving your home country and living somewhere else that has better opportunities and better living conditions and that are free from war. COuntries like the USA and Australia have been settled over several centuries by waves of such people.

These issues are on the agenda in almost every affluent country on the world, and doubly so for those countries that have liberal immigration pacts - such as the EU or have a wealthy country next door to a poor one and a huge, lowly populated region inbetween - like USA and Mexico.

Some of the more reasonable suggestions have been about getting some federal immigration laws in place and having some hefty penalties for people who employ illegal immigrants. Might be a start, but it'll take a new world order to make the problem go away altogether.

Right on, Magons, I agree.

As to legal Hispanics and that article, talk about unclear on the concept! It's not ABOUT illegal immigration per se, it's about what we choose to DO about it, and this law is sick.

Doesn't matter how people feel about immigration, illegal or otherwise. All that matters is what measures we take to fight illegal immigration, and how those measures reflect our humanity and our country's foundations.

I heard a guy on the radio yesterday (a legal immigrant). When the commentator asked him how you spot an illegal immigrant, he said "That's easy, they're the ones being very careful to obey the laws. Has nothing to do with how you dress or behave. I drive too fast on the freeway; I can always tell the illegals because they drive exactly the speed limit or less. They're afraid of being caught, so they're very careful to obey all the laws".

So, aside from those who come here specifically to break the law (which are in the minority), it seems mostly those who behave like model citizens are illegal. Imagine that!

Yeah. Right.

Its actually pretty easy to spot illegals.

Listen for the Reggatone and the Spanish, smell the greasy food, see the 15 living in a 1 bedroom, taste the fresh cut grass... wash and repeat.

lol (Im kidding... sort of)

ETA: i agree with the woman in the article btb... being called a raciss by "progressives" is now a badge of honor. It means you are on the right path.

That does not respond to my post in any way. Given the irrelevance of the statements, no reply is necessary.

But I'll say that "lol (Im kidding... sort of)" shows your mentality clearly...adding "sort of" shows you aren't really kidding, it's what you believe.
