I assume they're trying to "ease" the news in, but there's no doubt in my mind. And those "in the know" know it too, I have no doubt. Looking at Prince William Sound twenty years later, it's pretty obvious:

Devastation of wildlife
Destruction of the environment
Fishing industry is just plain "gone"
Probably several hundred miles of the Gulf Coast will have oil for generations
Who knows what else?

There's just no question about it. This area is going to be pretty much destroyed for at least a hundred years, given the size of this compared to the Exxon Valdez.

And Obama STILL wants to "drill, baby, drill"? Insanity.

Quote:

Experts say it's not clear yet how much the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will harm the environment along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and other gulf states. But they say it is clear the harm will be great.

That stretch of coastline is full of marshlands, replete with reeds and piles of dead grass that could soak up oil like a sponge. Unlike fish, the area's famous populations of blue crabs and oysters won't be able to outrun the slick. And, precisely at this time of year, the region is host to vast numbers of migratory birds returning from their wintering grounds in South America.

Besides the damage to fish and wildlife, even the land itself could be a victim of the spill. One scientist said if the oil kills marsh grasses, it could eliminate a key natural barrier that keeps Louisiana's precious coastline from eroding.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36881232/ns/us_news-washington_post/
Quote:

BP, which operates the well, was more optimistic, telling NBC's "TODAY" show on Sunday that a temporary fix — essentially a dome that would be placed over the leaks until they can be cut off — was nearly ready to be deployed. The dome would have piping to send the spewing crude up to tankers for collection.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36897088/ns/us_news-environment/

"Beyond Petroleum" my ass. Just watch: They'll fight paying the whole tab just as Exxon is still fighting, and the destruction will be incredible. They'll delay in court, and people will forget just as the forgot the Valdez. They won't forget what happened, ever, but in twenty years, how many will still care?

It's to the point where I change stations when news of it comes up; I already know, and I know what's coming. Just the suffering wildlife makes me want to cry.

But hey, we need that tiny portion of oil off our coast, yes we do! What a world...

Gawd, I hate this so much. I looked up the forms for volunteering, but I'm just too far away. I'm sitting here crying...they need volunteers, but I can't afford to get out there. Remembering the others I was involve with, I want SO badly to get out there and help with the wildlife.

I tried to find us some topics of interest, and I've offered a few. For me, this dwarfs the immigration thing, politics and about everything else. But I think I can't take any more today, either. Gonna go try to find something more uplifting to spend my day on. And avoid the news.

Oh, how I wish I could get there...

Sounds to me like we may need to gather up some of the native population before it hits and establish in-land above sea level fisheries and crab farms. And maybe other wildlife refuges.

There's not a whole lot we can do about 40,000 gallons a day of oil. We need to shut the source off first, which is easier said than done. After you've done that, there are ways, besides trying to burn the oil, that you can catalyze its destruction: one way that works very well is with biosurfactants. You'd need a LOT of it, though, and unfortunately, you're still probably looking at a long time frame of impact.

I recall hearing the breaking news on the radio out of New Orleans, while driving into work. The info was sketchy, at best, and not a whole lot was made of it, other than something real bad happened. How bad, no one had a clue. Later on, when I heard that the rig was 'listing', and likely would go under, I knew it was bad.

But not this bad.

I can't even watch the news for more than 5 minutes before just turning off the t.v.

When Saddam ignited 700+ oil wells, and it took nearly a year for all of them to be capped, may be the only thing which comes close to this tragedy.

This is a whole world of suck.

No, it's a big joke to you and your Republican friends. You wanted to dance around like a bunch of fucking idiots, chanting "Drill, baby, drill!" - and you fucking well deserve to see the consequences of the actions that YOU called for.

If you don't like it, GOOD. You should be inundated every day for the rest of your miserable fucking life with images of the disasters YOU make possible. You should have to sleep with the bones of the dead Iraqi children that YOU wanted murdered for your own sick bloodlust. You should be forced to dig the graves for the victims of unsafe drilling, and you should be forced to clean up the mess.

You want to whine about the humanity and inhumanity of it all when it goes wrong, but you will have NO part of doing anything to stop it from going wrong in the first place. The spill is on you; the deaths are on you. There's oil on your hands, as well as blood.

Everyone here understands at least partly the gravity of the situation; you know perfectly well that Mike hangs out just looking for you to snark at. That doesn't mean he doesn't comprehend what's happening.

He IS right, however, in that the Republicans' support of everything and anything Dumbya and his cronies did led to this. See other thread on the spill...BP's flaunting regulations and safety codes is phenomenal. Of course, the fines didn't TOUCH their bottom line, and mostly a blind eye was turned toward making them responsible...and who do we have to thank for THAT?

It goes on and on...

...and on.

Anything you want to blame on Obama when it comes to big oil, you can triple for Dumbya. On the other hand, Obama's taking oil ON in many ways: "Barack Obama will require oil companies to take a reasonable share of their ecord-breaking windfall profits and use it to provide direct relief worth $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a married couple. The relief would be delivered as quickly as possible to help families cope with the rising price of gasoline, food and other necessities. The rebates would be fully paid for with five years of a windfall profits tax on record oil company profits.

The Obama energy rebates will: offset the entire increase in gas prices for a working family over the next four months; or pay for the entire increase in winter heating bills for a typical family in a cold-weather state." http://blog.mises.org/8448/barack-obama-and-sarah-palin-on-taxing-oil-

You can look it all up for yourself; the fact is, Dumbya was CLOSELY TIED to the oil companies; Obama has been trying to curb their excesses. He talked much tougher before elected; no doubt politispeak and finding out how tough it is to DO anything once elected. He talked of opening the Coasts up to drilling (betcha THAT ONE's dead!); no doubt more compromise, compromise, compromise. He took campaign contributions from Big Oil; who doesn't?

But his record on oil companies beats the HELL out of Dumbya's, and you can place the blame for this spill directly at Dumbya's feet!

Give it up, guys; you haven't a leg to stand on.

And just for the record, I seem to recall most (if not all) of the lefties around here being AGAINST that particular Obama plan (among several others).

Y'know, I'd *love* to have an actual conversation with Rappy, but every time I ask questions he's uncomfortable with, he runs away and hides, throws a few insults, calls me a "child" for not seeing the world in his black and white way, and then says I'm not worthy of his esteemed response.

So in the realization (which you have come to as well, Nik) that he's not here to discuss at all, but to proselytize, I decided I'd poke him a bit. And hey, I hate Obama's recent stance on offshore drilling as much as you do, but I also realize that it's yet another vain effort on his part to court Republican votes; in my estimation, it's a waste of time and a betrayal of his values and his base, and it wouldn't have worked even if this disaster hadn't presented itself, because Republicans like Rappy flat refuse to ever admit that any idea Obama endorses might be a good idea - even if it's their idea in the first place!

The difference between Obama's new, now former stance on offshore drilling, and the Republican position on it, is that Obama didn't have t-shirts and placards made up that said, "Drill, Baby, Drill!", and he didn't run on that as part of his campaign. Republicans did, and now they don't want those words quoted back to them because of their deep embarrassment and their utter stupidity to ever look beyond today in their efforts to set policy.

Rappy doesn't want me pointing out the politically embarrassing parts of this disaster because the shortfalls are entirely on his side of the aisle, and he doesn't want his party to have this disaster hung around their necks - at least not before he tries to hang it around Obama's neck first. He's perfectly fine with trying to play politics with a crisis; he's NOT comfortable with others doing the same.

I know FauxNews is doing its best to blame this on either some conspiracy by Obama or the "environmental terrorists". Both are insane and stupid, but that never stopped Crappy from believing them...probably both at the same time, or that Obama is in league with the enviro-terrorists.

Not sure how often I'll have to point this out, Niki, but you waste AT LEAST as much time trying to talk reason to Rappy as I do snarking him. Have your efforts paid off any better than mine have? Look at this thread; the longest posts here are the ones you spent all your time researching, just to try to point out crazy things called "facts" to Rappy, which he has utterly ignored.

And yet, you continue to waste YOUR time on him, too. Why is that?

At this point, isn't BP a bunch of enviro-terrorists? Can't we just agree that anyone who was running around campaigning on the "Drilling Platform" during the election and since, is palling around with terrorists? "Drill, baby, drill!" is really no different than yelling "Death to America!", is it?

Or maybe this is just BP's way of trying to get in on the whole Tea Party thing. We dumped their tea into Boston Harbor, so they're going to dump their oil into our gulf to show their solidarity with the Tea Parties.

Nope. I don't "waste" my time, because what I do isn't aimed at Crappy. I refute his statements with facts, figures and cites so that OTHER PEOPLE can gain some understanding, and so that I can educate myself on the issues at the same time. I know none of it will get through to HIM, he's unimportant in the time and effort I take.

And yeah, I think my efforts pay off; others jump in and discuss and debate things, which jumping in I appreciate and which to me contributes to the discussions.

I love the BP as enviro-terrorists! It doesn't work in that they didn't CAUSE the problem in order to terrorize others, but the result does just that.

And yeah, by your logic, I also like the "palling around" bit--someone should pick that up, it would be a good joke. As would the fact that "drill baby drill" is anti-American, it puts our economy, ecology and environment in danger, thus affecting the lives of millions of Americans and their livelihoods.

As to the Tea Party--I see over and over that we both watch MSNBC and CNN, gives me a giggle. One of the "tweets" yesterday was something to the effect of "maybe if we hadn't dumped their tea, they wouldn't have wanted to get back at us".

Coupla good ones there, but you're wrong about how I spend my time. I "get" the fun you have snarking at Crappy, you mentioned it once and I've remembered it; do you "get" now why I spend the time I do looking up facts to offer?

Given I have no idea what DT's response was, or whether it was to you or me (tho' I'm guessing the latter). I kinda figure he thinks if I'm "honest" I'll admit how much I post. I have, I do, and I've given my reasons. I'm not blind and I'm not appalled, okay?

As to the "lower posts", I don't get what that means at all, tho' I'm fairly sure it's a snark. Snark away, if you want; we're each entitled to freedom of speech, right?

Yeah, I *DO* "get" that. But I don't think that you "get" that I'm essentially doing the same thing. Long rants to people who you will *never* agree with and from whom your are not expecting any constructive response at all, are probably a waste of time. You might notice I ignore a fair number of people. It's nothing personal, it's just that I had to do the above timing analysis myself, and then trim my posting.
