Man I got a local advocate howling in my ear going berserk about this one...

Seriously, they really aired this - and he's blowing a gasket about it.

Me, I pointed out, amused, that this is like a bank robber dropping his mask and fumbling the gun before he gets to the counter, they've just tipped their hand and all but ADMITTED they're a bunch of fucking terrorists, illegally collecting and misusing personal information, and that they are guilty as shit of every nasty thing they're being accused of.

Who needs a strawman when the other side hands you their ass on a plate by getting in the face of Joe Citizen and OUTRIGHT ADMITTING "Yes, we're a bunch of fascist jackboots, now bend the knee or this is gonna get ugly!"

There's this little thing called backlash, people, and he's gonna ride the wave - which is startin to look more like a tsunami from here...

ETA: Oh yeah, and I bet THAT does wonders for Census compliance, given they've just all but admitted why they want so much information, neh ?

Keep the Shiny side up

Fremd. State and Federal tax bureaus don't need to do anything illegal to get your personal information. They know who and where you are when you file a tax return and owe payments. Your name and address are right there on the form, and in the tax data files. If you owe back taxes, they've been sending you notices of balance due on a regular basis, so you can't really claim you forgot. If you move and file again next year, they'll still know where you are. The state tax agencies and the IRS share information from their tax files legally, and have no need to look in Census files or other secure data for addresses. They can (depending on agency) garnish your wages, seize your bank accounts and assets, take your home, set a collection agency on you, etc. Penalty and interest can add up to 25% a year to the amount you owe.

Actually the amnesty program is a pretty good deal, as you avoid the P&I, can set up payment plans, and sometimes negotiate a settlement to pay a lesser amount.

If you don't want to pay taxes, hide your money and/or don't file. Filing and not paying is a suckers game.

I realize that in principle, Geeze - what's got me laughing up my sleeve is the PR/Propagana angle, since putting something like this right out in the open makes people once again question whether there's any difference between the government and any other criminal racket, and brings to them an awareness of just how creepifyin we've let it get.

In this case the other side has handed us a strawman, complete with lit torch, you see ?

They didn't just shoot themselves in the foot here, they went with a double barrel sawed off and pulled both triggers.

If it's goin one way, it's goin the other, there's no way in hell to cross check it otherwise, and the IRS can simply log the requests and know by THAT information - easy enough, kinda like I don't have to see your database to know what's in it if I see everything that goes in, and everything that comes out, right ?

Apparently they also did that shit in 1983, the year before the above report.

Well, a study was done, 35 years ago. And Census didn't provide any data to IRS. They wanted the IRS's name and address files - along with welfare, medicare, and birth and death records - so they could send folks their census forms and cross-check their data.

The IRS, and the states, get tax returns every year. If the address the taxpayer uses on the forms changes, they update the address file. They also get address updates from the SSA and can query the Post Office for change-of-address filings.

The Census gets updates every 10 years. Most of the time their data is 5 to 10 years out of date. Why in the world would tax agencies want such old and incorrect data? Census would be the ones who'd need up-to-date information to get the best coverage for their mailouts.

There's just not any point in the IRS getting addresses from Census.

Actually 26 years, that was 1984 (how ironic, eh ?)

And while I don't see it as an issue worth too much howling about, it does support the notion that no matter what the original excuse for collecting such information is, once the information is in hand there's always, always the temptation to use it for other things, an almost inevitable occurance.

Remember, the Census HAS been caught spilling info to DepHomeSec before, and not even ten years ago.

And of course, given what's admitted to, and on average what we find out the real truth is years later, I am inclined to believe such things are more common and detailed then we know.

So really, one thing that folk must keep in mind is that they have no idea who the next group of "political undesirables" may be, five, ten years from now, and that some day THEY may be the ones living in fear of a standard-issue kicking in their door.

It's kinda like a point I've made *to* our so-called intel folk, about retroactive classification, once data has been wilded, it cannot be unseen, made to not exist - so folks should be damn careful what they spill in the first place.

Works the same for us civvies as well, once you've handed it over, ain't no gettin it back, although a much better tactic (before defenses against such were in place) was poisoning the well by feeding massive amounts of misinformation - there's an empty lot somewhere in Chigaco that no doubt still gets a lotta junk mail intended for me, and many marketing databases think I live in Centralia, PA - one of my little in-jokes.

I do take your point that the IRS likely doesn't need any damn help, since folks mostly halfass it, as you pointed out with filing and then not coughing up the dough, it was just that whatever PA official came up with this kinda fucked it up bigtime - you don't show the frogs the pot is on the stove with the heat on before you dunk them in it, you know ?

And to do it JUST before those Census drones start going door to door ?

Just imagine the reaction of the cynical, suspicious types who had seen that commercial and that very day had one of em at the door with all kinds of questions, neh ?

I had a little fun with one friday afternoon, but I took pity on him cause he seemed a decent sort.

I heard the knock, opened the door, and gave him the cold flat stare to see if I could creep him out - this has sent a couple would be salespeople and religious folk away, but his refusal to assume I was dangerously bonkers, courage to continue to try to do his job, and his respectful politeness in the face of my deliberate obstructionism caused me to go easy on him.

Drone: "Is this (address) ?"
Me: "Can you read ?"
Drone: "Sir ?"
*pointing to number beside door*
Drone: "That's the correct address ?"
Me: "Why else would it be there ?"
Drone: "So, could I ask you a few questions ?"
Me: "Can you count ?"
Drone: "Sir ?"
Me: "How many people do you see ?"
Drone: "One, may I ask you a few questions ?"
Me: "Nope, you've gotten all you're legally entitled to."
Drone: "But the census is very important..."
Me: "That may be, but you do not work for the Census, you work for a local temp agency, Manpower, in this case, who contracted you for the job without a background check, nor any skill requirement beyond the two you have so aptly demonstrated, therefore I have no particular reason to trust you soley on the basis of a laminated slip of paper anyone with a photocopier could easily duplicate, nor can I effectively verify your identity without wasting a considerable amount of time."
Drone: "Oh, that does make sense."
Me: "Right, for all I know you could just be a clever scammer, however I have given you the legal minimum you have a right to, merely by opening the door, and you're just trying to make a living so there's no reason to be excessively rude to you, good day sir."
Drone: "Thank you for your time."

That was excessively nice.. for me, and him being a clever fellow, and as I did not specifically instruct him *not* to, I've no particular issues with filling out other extremely obvious information like the fact that imma cracker white boy, in a wheelchair, and have two cats - if I did, I would not have opened the door in the first place.
