Quote:If our country operates on the principal that nobody gets something for nothing, it's worth a look to see which of the three remaining candidates, Democrat Barack Obama, Republican John McCain, and Democrat Hillary Clinton all stand in relation to campaign contributions from the oil industry; Exon, Shell, Occidental, Global Partners Ltd., ConocoPhillips, etc. In Hillary Clinton's case she has taken a whopping $267 thousand dollars from big oil interests to fuel her campaign. In second place is Republican John McCain with $229 thousand dollars in big oil contributions. Coming in last in big oil money contributions is Democrat Barack Obama. But before crowning Senator Obama a man of the people, Obama was no slouch either, having accepted over $128 thousand dollars from big oil interests. The actual number of contributing oil corporations in Barack Obama's case were fewer and the contributions themselves were generally smaller. The politician who benefitted the most from big oil campaign contributions in the 2008 Presidential campaign was former Presidential candidate Republican Rudy Giuliani with $634 thousand dollars.
Quote:Oil and gas interests have donated $ 53.4 million since 1991 to candidates and their parties. $20.8 million was donated in the 1995/6 period alone of which 77% went to the Republicans. Eight major oil companies, together with the Petroleum Marketers Association, donated $12.5 million to Congressional candidates and the parties in the last 6 years; 75% of this donation went to Republicans. Atlantic Richfield (ARCO), Chevron, Exxon and Amoco alone gave more than a million dollars each during this period, with ARCO topping the league table with $3.4 million in donations. Enron, a natural gas company, also gave over $1million. Altogether these these fossil fuel producers gave over 70% of their contributions to Republicans. The Republicans received a total of $9.3 million from the oil companies and their marketers, and the Democrats received a total of $3.2 million. These figures include PAC (Political Action Committee) donations which are given to individual candidates plus soft donations which are given to the two political parties.
Quote:The methodology of the study is worth noting: It tallies up the contributions of people at three of the biggest companies (and their families), finding they were more generous to Obama. But at the same time, the study notes that overall, McCain has hauled in three times more money from the industry than Obama has.
Quote: On July 30th, 2008, for the eighth time, legislators failed to extend renewable energy federal investment tax credits. Senate bill S. 3335 would extend the 30% business tax credit for installing solar energy systems through 2017. The bill also raises the homeowner tax credit cap from $2,000 to $4,000. You’d really think this would be a slam dunk, right? Wrong. Forty four Democrats voted “Aye”, with two Independents and 5 Republicans. Forty two Republicans voted “Nay”, with one Democrat. Since 1990, oil companies have given 75% of their funds to Republicans (over $220,000,000). The 5 Republican senators (Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, Elizabeth Dole from North Carolina, Norm Coleman from Minnesota, and Gordon Smith from Oregon) approving the procession of the bill had a relatively small percentage of their campaign contributions coming from the non-renewable energy industry.
