Here's a good article about why you should stop sending letters to networks about shows that are being canceled.

http://www.boingboing.net/2010/05/06/how-to-really-save-y.html#more

Next time someone tries to get you to send a letter to a network you can inform them that they're wasting their time. There are better ways to try to save your favorite show.

It also did a nice job of outlining why Firefly is so far in the hole. Sets gone. Actors gone. Hope...

Interesting. He says the way that has worked in the past (Trek, Jericho, Chuck, and others) doesn't, then suggests that people do the method that has yet to really work (Firefly, Farscape - though Firefly/Serenity could certainly be argued to have worked, just not as he means).

Methinks he had little to write about that day, or just wanted to soak up some extra hits by being contrarian.

Chuck was a campaign to support the sponsor by buying up sandwiches at subway. Seems far from a letter writing campaign to me.

Besides those are a small sample of times that letter campaigns may have worked. How many times have they failed? Is the success rate any better than sitting on your hands?

Of course more letter writing campaigns have failed than worked, that's a given.

But even then, letter writing campaigns have worked more often than his proposal.

And who exactly said anything about sitting on their hands? Writing letters IS doing something, AND has precedent to work.

Shows that are on the bubble have been renewed in the past without letter writing campaigns.

Like with Serenity. We like to think we had a strong influence on Serenity getting the greenlight. The more I hear about it the more it sounds like the fan letters had little to do with the actual decision.

I don't know if we can ever really know if letter writing campaigns worked. Even if they had no impact it's smart for the network to say they're reviving the show for the fans. It at least helps make them loyal viewers.

Basically I'm saying I haven't seen any verifiable evidence that letter campaigns have worked.

Well, if you're going to insist that even those shows that are considered to have been saved by them, sometimes even at the network's admission to be non-evidence, then I suppose there is literally no piece of proof that would convince you.

It is not just writing the letters, but getting people involved. This brought people's attention to the show and by word of mouth the sales of DVD's increased. So the letters themselves may not have had a great influence, but the action got people motivated to buy the DVD's and this showed the network there was a market out there. We got a movie. And an Email costs nothing. So it is not like anyone is making a big cash investment.

@Storymark:

He also said that it's become so prevalent that its become background noise. So, just because there are examples of it working, its highly doubtful that it'll even have impact again.

So, how do letters improve the profit that the shows generate again? They don't and profit is all that the networks care about.

Also, letters didn't make Serenity happen. What did work is proving that not only was there an audience to profit off of, that audience was GROWING. Growing being the important factor. There was also that little thing that the increase in DVD sales proved that these new viewers were also willing to spend money. Something that this article points out is pretty much the only way to get something done. That was our contribution to getting the BDM green-lite. Nothing more.
