Reality bites the Tea Party

Quote:Believe it or not, tea partiers, your taxes probably went down this year. Soon after Barack Obama took office, those tax-and-spend Democrats cut individuals’ federal taxes by roughly $173 billion, the AP reports, which should more than make up for any tax increases states were forced to push through to make up for mortgage crisis budget shortfalls. “The fact is, in the past year we have had more tax cuts than almost any time in our nation’s history,” said one Democratic congressman. But “people don’t realize because of the false rhetoric” from conservatives. But Republican complaints aren’t totally baseless; the Bush tax cuts will expire in January, and some tax increases were included in the health care legislation, meaning taxes will be heftier in the future.

Quote:The whole system is incredible regressive, the overtaxed goods that go through the most taxation are those consume by the poor. The high end expenses, such as investments, real estate, have lower tax, and the overseas transactions need not have any.

Quote:Originally posted by AnthonyT: "Like the idea of screaming that Obama will take away their guns when he's actually WEAKENED gun laws" Hello, When I voted for Obama, I did so with the knowledge that my right to bear arms would be compromised by his administration. This was a heavy weight on my conscience. However, I felt it was important to shift the balance of power in this country. I felt it was important to send a message to the world that we were about things like hope and tolerance. I also hoped that a subsequent Republican president would undo whatever damage the Obama administration did. Imagine my surprise when, month after month, I see gun rights being strengthened all over the U.S. Imagine my further surprise when, with each successive victory, the Gun Rights Advocates become louder and more energetic about their issue. I can't quite figure it out. I have a belief about what is happening, and it is unsupported by any evidence. I believe that the Republicans aren't winning many battles, and so they are very loud about the battlegrounds where they are virtually unopposed by the administration. They can seem like they are scoring victories, even though there isn't any pressure coming against them from the top. Meanwhile, I think the Democrats are quite content to let the Republicans fight their imaginary war over Gun Rights to a successful conclusion, because while all that is occurring, they are focusing their attention on other areas that are important to them. This feels true to me, and it feels extraordinarily apparent. Unfortunately, I have no actual evidence to back up my beliefs. I also suspect that the Obama administration has a second-term plan to deal with the gun issue, and I suspect it's a plan that the Republicans are not expecting and are unprepared for. I think the administration is clever enough for an 'out of left field' solution to the problem. In any event, I have lost a great deal of faith in Obama, since he has done little to assure that the civil rights abuses of the past are not repeated. I'd have liked to see the individuals and corporations who violated human rights on orders from the government be severely punished. We learned this was the way to deal with the issue after WWII. I am also severely disappointed in the new Health Care plan. As a Libertarian, I opposed government mandated health care. But as a human being, I understood the potential benefit and boon to everyone if every sick man and woman, poor or rich, could rely on being treated regardless of their situation or problem. Unfortunately, the new Health Care plan seems like a profit guarantee for Insurance companies. If they were going to do this thing, there needed to be a government-run public option at no cost. I'm flabbergasted at what was delivered in its stead. I'm just confused and disappointed all over. Nothing is what I thought it would be, and nothing is operating in a logical fashion. --Anthony "Liberty must not be purchased at the cost of Humanity." --Captain Robert Henner

Is there no one else here who sees that as at least SOME kind of positive sign?" Hello, I heard about this. Have you ever seen the 13th Warrior? There is a scene in the movie where a youth is standing at the prow of a boat. He is waiting to be acknowledged. The Arab in the movie asks (I paraphrase) "What's the deal with the kid on the boat?" His translator responds, "The boy is letting them see him." The Arab is incredulous, "See him?! He's standing right out in the open." "Yes," the translator replies, "but he is giving them time to decide if he is real. Something to do with the mists..." This scene sums up my opinion on the progress on auditing the Fed. (And forgive me for using a movie to illustrate my opinion. I know such practices have a soiled history here.) But essentially, I am staring at it, watching silently, to see if it is real. --Anthony "Liberty must not be purchased at the cost of Humanity." --Captain Robert Henner
