I don't see "motive" in this; I see "opportunity". Exxon learned that a little bad press is no barrier to becoming the most profitable corporation on Earth. They see BP as weak now, and ripe for acquisition, and ready to be rehabbed with new PR and a minor investment of time and money, and they will become a top earner again.

The goal of corporations is to make money. Not friends, not allies, not buddies or bro's, just money. The corporate motto is "Gimme that scrilla!" They may have stolen the slogan of Malcolm X: "By any means necessary!"
