ok I'll bite. Firstly, I didn't see the word strike in the article anywhere, correct me if I'm wrong (ctrl+f couldn't find it either). It sounds like the city is cutting the budget and the police dept is being forced to lay off officers. Due to these layoffs, their manpower will be reduced and they won't be able to send out an officer to talk to people in person for those listed issues.

I gathered from the article that there is a way to report these incidents online and they would be dealt with accordingly from there. The article did mention a union so I'm sure things aren't going as smoothly as they could, unions do tend to muck things up in my opinion.

Gun control wasn't mentioned in the article so I have nothing to comment on regarding that aspect.

Make no mistake, I agree that it's terrible what's happening in the article, but I can see where the police dept is coming from, even if I don't agree with their solution.

As for being arrested for defending yourself, if such a thing happens then it's wrong and something needs to be done about it. Don't ask me what because I honestly don't know, but a person should have a right to defend themselves, within reason, and shouldn't have to worry about the consequences of doing so. That should be common sense which is sadly not as common as one would think.

I'm thinking if they aren't responding to burglary and theft calls, they aren't spending a lot of time arresting and prosecuting people for defending themselves from burglary or theft, either. Doesn't really make financial sense when things are this tight, to try prosecuting someone that juries are loathe to convict and even more reluctant to imprison or levy heavy fines against, because juries generally will sympathize with property owners, ESPECIALLY when you have it on record that the police were unresponsive to your calls.

Did you get the idea that I rely on government to protect me when I said the police were the LAST people I would call, or when I said that I personally have never really paid any heed to alleged gun bans?

Sorry, assclown, but around here you ONLY call 9-1-1 *AFTERWARDS*, for clean-up only. I've documented that it took them well over 3 hours to show up for a "Shots fired" call, despite having a police substation literally three blocks away. And when they showed up, they didn't even stop; just rolled by slow. I'd already swept the area by then - while my wife was calling it in, I was checking the area, making sure no one was hit and down.

Couple issues with the quoted text:

1) Reporting lost or stolen firearms is a BAD idea? Around here, that's one of the big liability issues about guns: What happens if your gun is stolen from your house or car, and is then used in a crime, and you didn't report it missing? Are YOU liable for the crime? That's a question that's still out there, far as I know. If one of my guns were missing, I'd get it on paper pronto, just so as to relieve myself of any criminal or civil liability for any actions that happen related to that gun at a later date. So that part just seems like common sense, really.

2) The ammo sales thing was proposed statewide by The Governator, as I recall, and is not in any way unique to Oakland, but rather was proposed as state law.

As to gun sales inside Oakland, good luck with that. As I've said, I can find nothing about it passing or being put into effect or enforced - and frankly, if the police are broke and not responding to crimes, they really, REALLY aren't going to be wasting their time going after gun sales, so that seems a moot point at best.

Your claims about the people being unarmed are as fictitious as your claims about sale being illegal. There's PROPOSALS by whack-jobs, but there always are. Why aren't you up in arms about Arizona overthrowing the Constitution? After all, there's a proposed state law that would deny citizenship to children born in the United States, which is strictly IN CONFLICT with the wording of the U.S. Constitution! I know it's only a proposed piece of legislation, but in your mind, in true PN fashion, that means it's already the law of the land, right?
