Thanks dude! I always look online at those fan films that are big budget charity films and with professional actors and think why I got myself into this... but honestly I think it came out quite well. Much better than I could imagine! (Of course a couple thousand bucks would have been useful...)

You know what?

That was pretty damn shiny!

I thought that the writing and characterisation was particularly good and you had folks who could deliver it convincingly enough that it wasn't too hard to suspend the disbelief required with having other folks playing our BDHs. I'd probably go as far to say that this is the best that this has been done since the Sonic Society's Old Wounds podcast drama some years back. Nicely edited and shot too.

What a treat to see a newly completed, well paced 15 minute story set in the verse done with enthusiasm and ability.

Plans for any more?

That was thoroughly enjoyable and I was honest to god, totally entertained. You guys are good! Good acting all around but the guy playing Badger - he has the chops! But you were all great.

I think you did a nice job of following the characters in the dialogue too. Some of the remarks you had Jayne and Mal saying felt right. Nice job with the writing.

I love the scene where you cut from Wash and Jayne to Simon and Kaylee with Jayne and Simon re-telling things from a different point of view. That was damn clever and in tune with what you'd expect from Firefly.

All else was good and knowing how tough it is to put these things together you are to be applauded for such an endeavour. Edits were good, camera was well done and used nicely for comedy where needed, the graphics and fx/3d animation were suitable and it all flowed very well with no gaps in pacing. I would very much like to see some more!

A couple of things for next time (because there always are - sorry) but It would be good if you can find yourselves someone to play Zoe, and someone to add incidental/score music to ramp up the atmosphere. But these are minor, minor quibbles. All in all you should be VERY happy with the end product.

ACE! Thank you for sharing this.
All the best
Ric

I'll chime in with congratulations, also.
I updated your listing on this page:
http://fireflydvd.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=37708#37708
to include the Youtube link and to put your film in the completed category.

Like any no-budget-for-fun project, there are areas that come up short.
Some things you'll be able to improve through practice and some things will always be limited by resources. That's not a criticism, just an acknowledgment of reality.

Having said that, look at what you guys accomplished.
You had an idea, fleshed it out, gathered resources and then worked within their limitations, stayed at your project as a team and put out a finished piece of work.

You guys told a complete story, had some clever dialog moments and kept things moving forward.
I think your acting team brought a lot of positives to your project.
While everyone did a nice job capturing the essence of the existing characters,
I would like to see these actors bringing new 'verse characters to life.
If this is something you all are looking to pursue long-term, practice is always the tool for smoothing rough edges.
Based on this effort, I hope ya'll are encouraged to do more!

Right now, there are three East Coast Firefly fan film groups. I hope it is possible to see more work coming from this side of the country, while wishing those in the western US, Canada and Australia continued success as well.

I like it. The shots between Jayne, Wash and Simon. telling the story was a fun bit.

I also liked the way 'River' held the money that she won. It had a very understated River-esque quality to it.

Only one real quibble. Mal had to convince Jayne ( the king of robbing the dead and taking trophies) to scavenge from the dead.

Am I the only one who is pained by Jayne killing the unconscious wounded? Jayne double tapped two of Badger's completely defenseless henchmen. “I was just making sure,” was Jayne's excuse to Mal. That ain't a reason. It was Firefly for nihilists. Why would Mal keep Jayne on Serenity after that? You could explain away the immorality by saying the henchmen were already dead, but that's a load of sophist bull.
I'm a little late to be sending script notes to Connor Wilson, the writer, but Jayne's double murder could be cut out of this video without hurting the continuity. It is Monday morning and I am seriously grumpy about being at work. So, anybody that's offended by negativity, just ignore me.

No hard feelings at all, we want more criticism for this movie haha. We really just threw that in there because the actor who played Jayne is hilarious if you really know him well and that was kinda an insider for the cast and crew... but i totally understand where you're coming from

If Mike Vest is parodying Jayne then his shooting of henchmen laying unconscious is wicked fun. But if Jayne is being played as a real mercenary, well, then Jayne crossed the thin red line into Nazi war crime territory and he should hang by the neck until dead. (Don't worry, Jayne, because it is a smooth silk noose that doesn't leave an ugly rash on your corpse.) Since my hangover headache has gone away, I'm feeling generous so I'll call it wicked fun with Jayne. I was in too much pain to feel generous this morning, that's why my opinion changed.

Am I the only one who completely agrees with you?

Remember what Jayne once said? "These are stone killers, little man! They ain't cuddley, like me." And he was right. What we witnessed the 'new' Jayne doing here was an execution-style mob-hit. Very out of character for both Jayne and the rest of the crew, for that matter. They'll kill a man in a fair fight (or if it looks like he's gonna start a fair fight); or push him thru an engine, if need be. But never walking up to an unconscious person, riddling them with an etra hole, 'just to make sure.'

Having said that, it was an otherwise very shiny story. I had a little trouble at first adjusting to a very young cast, of which I think both Mal and River could really pull it off. The Jayne character just can't seem to plausibly overcome his young age (you really kinda need a thirtysomething for that role). The Mal really did very well in this regard. And River? Oh, River! She was actually pretty, erm, pretty. :) I could really envision her grapple with the... well, never mind that. Of course, her role was 'easier', in the sense of playing a girl her own age, but she did a brilliant River nonetheless. Chapeau!

Well, I understand where you're coming from about kinda getting out of character and all. Either way, the two guards were dead and he "was just makin sure" hahah. Anyway, we had hours of footage of Jayne just goin crazy and we just needed to throw somethin like that in. Plus, it was the very end of the editing process and we figured it was fine ahaha. (Apparently not... :/ )

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I was a bit troubled by Jayne shooting the downed goons as well. It was jarring as it is out of character for what we've seen of Jayne so far. If there had been some driving motivation behind such an action, I could see it, but this seemed off.

Other than that, the film was excellent! The writing, character interaction, all of it was fun and entertaining. Can't wait to show it to some of the local browncoats to get their reactions.

Nice job!

I love the line about the grenades!!!
"I swear one day I'll tell him not to bring them."

Nice job explaining why Zoe wasn't there, though the whole white thing didn't make sense to me. I don't think the verse cares about race, just about being from the Core or the Rim and such...I just can't see Zoe caring if her parent's approve or not of Wash being white. But you needed an excuse so I understand.

I loved the cinematography of the fight scene when Jayne beat everyone up...very awesome camera work. I am a huge fan of long takes, so that made me happy. In some of the other scenes though, you need to be careful of the 180 degree rule. As an amateur filmmaker myself, I didn't know about it for my first "film" and I kept wondering why my edits were so apparent. If you keep the camera on one side of the line-of-action instead of jumping all around, the edits will seem more seamless and it won't break the eye-lines.

Nice CGI work! What program did you use?

On the whole, it made me smile and laugh and very happy to see that people are trying to bring new content. It was original and had a great episodic feel to it. I wanted more Kaylee and Simon though :P

Well the thing about Zoe being married to a white guy was something that we figured Jayne would say... also, the 180 degree rule was something that we made sure we wouldn't do in the storyboard, but we ended up just throwing shots in there that may have not made any sense. The CGI was actually done in spore hahahah we really had no budget and no time to do anything more than that... thats why things may have seemed rushed.

Well THAT was interesting -- and kinda amusing in a weird sort of way. To me, the characters looked like "themselves" only much younger...like a 17 year old Captain Reynolds and Jayne and so on.
