Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Just thought I'd throw out my next topic of wonderment for comment. I have NO leanings on this.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

To get the ball rolling, here are things I've considered:

Public option. He pulled it off the table so fast and so completely it was breathtaking. And that was AFTER he offered the exact-same public option as the weak-kneed alternative to public healthcare, something the majority of Americans and the AMA were all for. So, what happened?

Let's say he or his family were physically threatened. The simple answer is the Secret Service and sunlight and air - you tell the country exactly who and how. People will figure out why.
Let's say he was politically $threatened$. You go on the stump FIRST and get your ideas out and KEEP getting them out there so that stupid garbage like 'death panels' doesn't get traction. And nothing beats a political threat like visibly doing something popular.
What could he possibly be bought with that would be better than being popular and getting a second term (and even more opportunity down the road)?
Perhaps he really believes this is the THE answer. Except a cursory accounting of healthcare delivery and cost indicates that it is not.
Maybe he stumbled off the block and never recovered. Except there were many opportunities to recover. His whole course of action over a prolonged period of time- including secretive congressional meetings and private chats with health insurance execs - indicated he was more than a victim of misfortune.
Maybe the job was just impossible. Despite a groundswell of public support he simply couldn't convince a democratic majority in both houses to do the popular thing. 'Ya think?
Nothing I've considered quite accounts for his determined reversal.

And how about continuing the bailouts? Afghanistan? Unemployment insurance? Rebuilding the infrastructure? Or, SignyM's suggestion - taxing the ultra-wealthy?

What reversals do you see between promise and delivery? Between problem and solution? And why do you think they exist?

Just musings.

It's easy, for me, and the exact reason I was afraid of his getting elected (except that the fear of McCain was WORSE!). He's too willing to compromise, to be pushed this way or that in hopes of getting ANY support from the right. He still doesn't seem to have learned this, and it's a failing I can't excuse.

I don't think he was prepared to be President. As state senator, he did a LOT of reaching across the aisle and got a lot done. He seemed to have come to the Presidency thinking he could do the same, and hasn't gotten the message.

I believe he's too easily led by his advisors and the military, and with the latter again keeps trying to "compromise" to no avail.

The other thing is I think he's afraid of pushing his agendas because he's the first Black President. There's the thing I've heard about the warning of him looking like an "uppity Black", so his propensity for avoiding being too forceful. THAT doesn't work either, so we're stuck with weak shit or nothing.

So: too strong a desire to compromise, weakness, and fear of looking too "uppidty" are the answers, for me, and they're getting US nowhere. I think he WAS in favor of the public option, but caved, as he has on so many things.

I'll never forgive him for backing down on the IWC's ban on whaling...that was the final straw, for me. I believe it was done in hopes of getting support from some of the countries who want to continue whaling, and his final stupid effort to "placate" which made me accept that he will NEVER be a strong President.

Why does he have to be one or the other?

I see him as a True Believer who happens to have gotten an Impossible Job, all while being Bought and Threatened just enough to make him appear to be a Bungler.

In other words...

Yes. All of the above.

Good one; and I agree. All of them came into play, with the end result being bad for the country; very valid Mike!
