Pondering my life long geek tendencies yesterday I tried to figure out our early influences. I think mine were an interesting combination of things: I was always an odd child, I was obsessed with "outer space" TV shows And I started reading when I was about 3. My parents were Sicilian immigrants to Australia in the 60's. They encouraged us to read from a very young age as they didn't have access to many books growing up. We'd borrow books from the library and they'd get us comics in Italian and English. The Italian ones were usually Disney Our other comics were originally Caspar,Richie Rich, Archie, Looney tunes etc. until one day Mum came home with 2 comics she'd gotten off a sales rack at the supermarket. She'd chosen them randomly and just gave them to us due to her belief all comics were for kids. They were "Ghost Rider", and "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" a few days later she brought us Spiderman because we watched the cartoon on TV...my brother was 7, I was 8 and that week we became soooo much cooler than our friends and were transported to a whole new dimension. We would read them then swap them or trade them in for cash. I had no idea how valuable some of our comics would be if we kept them. The only one I ever kept was that first Ghost Rider and I'm never letting that out of my possession as it marks an important geekdom milestone...plus it's tatty and torn from all the love it got.

My childhood influences are too numerous to list, and some of them not nice to relate, but REALLY early on, it was Batman & the Green Hornet- later Trek & Lost In Space. Plus some Superman & Supergirl comics I still have, all tattered & worn.
