The poll shows significant shifts in public opinion on the issue just since last year.

More Americans continue to oppose gay marriage than support it, according to the poll, which was released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center. But for the first time since Pew starting asking about same sex marriage 15 years ago, fewer than half of those polled said they oppose legalizing the institution.

The poll revealed other firsts. For the first time since Pew began asking about the issue, more white mainline Protestants and white Catholics favor gay marriage than oppose it.

"The shift in opinion on same-sex marriage has been broad-based, occurring across many demographic, political and religious groups," Pew's polling analysis said.

The analysis noted that political independents, who were opposed to gay marriage by a wide margin just last year, are now divided on the issue.

The poll -- which combines two surveys conducted from July to September of this year -- found that 42 percent of Americans favor same-sex marriage, while 48 percent oppose it.

In polls conducted in 2009, 37 percent favored gay marriage while 54 percent were opposed, Pew said.

Sixty percent of Americans favor allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, while 30 percent oppose it. Support for gays serving openly in the military has remained fairly stable over the last five years, Pew said.

On gay marriage, the new poll found significant differences of opinions along age, racial and partisan lines.

Americans in the so-called Millennial Generation -- those born after the 1980s -- favor gay marriage by 53 percent to 39 percent, the poll found. Among those born between 1928 and 1945, just 29 percent favor allowing gays and lesbians to marry legally, while 59 percent are opposed.

Among Democrats, 53 percent support legalized gay marriage, while just 24 percent of Republicans do.

Time, and evolution of thought, move on. Hopefully in a few more generations we'll mature even further...

Now, let's break this down...

We're told by the right-wing tea-bagging whackos that Muslims MUST NOT build a community center near "ground zero", because "most Americans" are opposed to it. So they seem to be in favor of majority rule, at least on this issue.

And we're told by these same tea-bagging scumbags that we MUST NOT have any kind of single-payer public option healthcare system available, apparently because the vast majority of American (over 70%) are in favor of it.

And now more than half of Americans are in favor of gay marriage.

Wonder how the righties will feel about "majority rule" on THAT issue...

The modern definition of "socialist" is anyone who's winning an argument against a tea-bagger.

No, you musunderstood. Not more than half of Americans support gay marriage, LESS than half of Americans oppose it, which is the difference. We're not at the point yet where more than half of Americans actually SUPPORT gay marriage. Yet. It's coming, just like Jews in the military and Civil Rights.

The dramatic change is that previously 37% supported it, 56% opposed it...and that was just LAST YEAR. We're making progress, faster than one would have expected, it seems.

Gotta learn to spin things positive, Niki.

If less than half oppose something you like, then you say MORE THAN HALF SUPPORT IT.

I'm confused - did they actually post the percentages of this new poll? What you quoted broke it down by categories and talked a lot about "this is more than that and this is half of the other..." but did they give the overall percentages of the new poll?

BTW - could you post the link when you quote articles so I can go look at the full article? Thanks!

Edit: Doh! Never mind, I just found it. Hidden in a little paragraph - 42% to 48%

Gay Marriage is a wedge issue, so Americans say whatever their media tells them, because the media is telling them all the time. And yes, televangelist preachers are the media.

The only logical libertarian position to me is pro-gay marriage, but the issue itself is a distraction, like the ground zero mosque. Nothing really matters much until we get the thugs out of power, or at least, off our backs.

I didn't feel it was "hidden", Mal4...did it need to be highlighted or mentioned more than once? The point is the same and the numbers were provided; the rest was illustrative of what people think on the issue and the percentages that reflect that thinking, for me.

Of COURSE it's a wedge issue, DT, as is the Community Center, Sharia law, and all the other things being used to avoid people looking at the truth: that by being sidetracked on fear-enducing issues, they've completely forgotten that it was eight years of Republican rule which all but destroyed the country, so putting them back in power is the height of idiocy. Any visceral wedge issue will suffice to do that.

Niki

Wedge: A device used for splitting along a chosen narrow point of division.

Think about it: Partisanship is a wedge. Ergo, the hidden truth cannot be that republicans are evil, or incompetent, because that statement, would, itself, be a wedge.

Here's some real issues:

The economy has been completely hijacked by a bunch of hooligans

So has the political process

People are destroying the environment to boost energy production

Energy is not at all in short supply, the only reason to have it is that it can become a control commodity

Control commodities hijack whole societies

Hijacked societies become the bitches of their masters, and are the hapless dupes and lackeys that can be used to fight other people's wars.

Those are issues. I don't think they're wedge issues. No population wants to be slaves, to be at war, to sink into poverty or to be controlled by exterior third parties. These are all things that someone wants you not talking about.

It ain't Obama or Bush or Clinton...it's all bad, because something is seriously rotten in the state of Denmark and no one is talking about it.

Sorry. I kinda gave up posting links, again, because nobody seemed interested; previously I always posted a link to anything. I'll start again.

I'll agree with the first three, most obviously under BUSH, but it's been going on for a long time under both parties.

I disagree wholeheartedly on the fourth; that mentality is what's keeping us from working toward oil-independent energy, in my opinion. I forget which people here actually believed oil is infinite, or whether you were one of them. For me, that thinking is ridiculous.

Ergo five as well, as far as energy is concerned.

As to six, I agree that Americans have become hapless dupes in large who can be utilized in MANY ways, not just wars, but none of the above serves to convince me there is a gigantic conspiracy keeping us slaves. I think it's more complicated than that.

And I never said, nor do I believe, that Republicans are evil OR incompetent. I think their leaders and a number of others are devoid of conscience and quite competent at manipulation to attain their agenda. But PEOPLE who are Republican are like people who are Democrat--they want a decent life and hope that whoever they vote for will help make that happen. Dupes, as you said, but far from evil.

Even Republican LEADERS aren't evil, just willing to do things other might not, with no qualms whatsoever. NOT to say that Democrat politicians aren't the same, just fewer of them and not in such a well-organized manner. For the most part, I see Dems as neutered by the fear of being hated or doing the wrong thing.

But I don't believe in "evil". "Incompetence", yes, but again, Bush's appointees, etc., were the epitome of that...while Obama's aren't, to me they're still the wrong people for the most part, for other reasons.
