"Angel" and "X-Files" veteran Jeffrey Bell has been recruited to join ABC's "Alias" next season as part of his new two-year, seven-figure overall pact with Touchstone Television. Bell will sign on to "Alias" next season as a writer and co-executive producer. His Touchstone pact calls for him to be upped to executive producer on the drama series in the 2005-06 season. Bell is poised to segue to "Alias" after spending the past three seasons on the WB Network/20th Century Fox TV drama "Angel," the spinoff of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." He started out on "Angel" as a supervising producer in 2001 and worked his way up to executive producer this season. Before "Angel," Bell spent nearly four years on Fox's "The X-Files," where he rose from staff writer to executive story editor in the show's final season. Bell is repped by CAA and attorney Cliff Gilbert-Lurie. (Cynthia Littleton)

I know this is really good for him, and we are most likely at the point of having to accept no more Angel, however I feel everyone is abandoning ship and I am not ready to yet...if ever, somebody drown me!

One can only hope he'd improve the quality of that show, which has been miserable the last season and a half.

Just voicing my protest over that comment. After Angel is gone, Alias is just about the only thing on TV really worth watching.

Respectfully, I disagree. I watched the entirety of the first season of Alias, from the second episode on, and became quite enthralled by it. The second season went badly downhill, what with Abrams dumbing everything down and virtually removing the edgy spy drama (and the ancient mythos) that made the first season so good, in the process caving in to the Syd-Vaughn shippers.

I suffered through the latter nine-tenths of the second season, bitching constantly and hoping that it would get better. The second season finale, with Syd getting whacked with amnesia and waking up in Hong Kong, actually looked as though it might be able to turn the show around.

Alas, no. The first episode of the third season was back to the same old shipper crap, except this time it threw in Vaughn's "wife" and had Syd start breaking down in tears every episode. The plotting is lame, the love triangle is lamer, and what little action remains is poorly choreographed and executed. The first season will forever hold a place in my heart, but everything since has been overly melodramatic spy opera crap.

Normally in thie instance I would prepare my own reply essay to explore the glories of Alias and its quality plotlines. And admittedly, there aren't as many good moral conundrums as there were in the first season. But I still like it. I look forward to finding out what happens next, and I love constantly trying to figure out where the next betrayal will come from. I don't have some overwhelming reason why the show is good. But sometimes you like something just because you do.

I just wanted to defend Alias' honor against haters. Don't be hatin'.

Same thing happened to ER. I originally watched it religiously, but, after the first couple of seasons it started down that road to soap opera town. The death of Mark Greene marked the end of my viewership.

Clearly I spend too much time around teenagers. "Don't be hatin'" is something my students say when they're joking each other. It's the equivalent of "Talk to the hand."

I suppose my previous defense of Alias will not hold up. But I love the show, so in my devtion I will defend it more thoroughly.

Ok, so season one was admittedly better than the next two seasons. I agree with that much. But that doesn't mean these seasons were and are crap. Season five of Buffy was infinitely better than season four, but I like season four too.

The show is and has always been more character-driven than plot-driven. It centers around Sidney, who is always reliable. She will always do what she feels is the right thing, which is unusual for a spy. She actually feels bad when people get hurt. She is a lot like Buffy in that respect. Just like in "Dead Things," my favorite Buffy episode, Sidney has to constantly question her moral standing. I like that aboout her. As Giles said about Buffy, "She is the hero." That's Sidney, always trying to do the right thing.

The rest of the show moves around her as its axis. If you're always looking for Jack to shoot Joey Slotnick again, it's probably not going to happen. It's not always Jack who makes the questionable moral decisions. This season Lauren has been the one to watch. There is always a character whose motives are a mystery. Is Sloan geniune? Who knows...

If every season were just like season one, everybody would bitch about how every season was just like season one. They had to change, and they did lose a touch of their edginess, but just a touch. The show moves a little slower now, and it can probably benefit from a Whedon alumnus, but I still find the characters worth watching.

So there.

Yah, when I read that I thought it could've gone either way as I've heard "Don't be hatin'" used both ways before. But, I've never heard "Talk to the hand." used in a joking manner. I'm just used to people putting a

after a joke, so, I interpreted it the serious way.

Now making a mental note.

WINTERFELL

I watch alias every week and have since it's first ep. I agree it's the only thing left worth watching after angel is gone.. but I am not above criticizing it for it's draw backs. I enjoy that most anyone can die on the show, or come back for that matter, but I am worried about the soap opera-ish stories and the rambaldi crutch they won't get off of.

anyway, I miss will. not sure how I feel about him sleeping with syd.. I like that he finally got his (cause he was the closest thing to an attractive nerd on that show which gives hope to all of us) but then...he....just...leaves.... ug. wish they would bring him back. they have no link to the real world anymore.. it shouldn't be called alias, it should be called "big crazy spy show about rambaldi"

QUICKSAND

So there was this show called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and because it was good, it attracted many viewers and was a ratings hit for fledgling network The WB.

Fox: "What are they doing over there at the WB?? Hot chicks kicking butt gets ratings?! We had no idea!! Let's have our OWN version, and call it "Dark Angel."

Followed by....

ABC: "What are they doing over there at Fox?? Hot chicks kicking butt gets ratings?! We had no idea!! Let's have our OWN version, and call it "Alias."

I accidentally watched "Alias" once, because my parents are big fans (which is, like, a huge Danger Sign)... I figured, I'll give this a shot, I wouldn't want to be a Closed Minded Bastard.

I tried. I DID. I wasn't impressed. I gave "Family Guy" a wide berth for years because I thought it was a knockoff of "The Simpsons," but that show RULES. Alias... not the same league.

But hey, to each their own.
