My husband handed me a receipt and a nickel as we were walking out of Target Saturday morning. I had handed him a ChicoBag to use while he made our purchases and I handled another task. For bringing his own bag, he was given a nickel. It made a big impression on him. He’s not one to remember to bring a bag with him when he goes shopping on his own, and he didn’t know that some stores give small rebates for each reusable bag you use.

The incident got me wondering. Does giving a few cents back per reusable bag encourage people to bring their own bags to the store? It’s certainly not a deciding factor for me. I’ve been bringing reusable bags to the store for years now, long before any store in my region instituted the incentive.

For those who aren’t completely committed to reusable bags, is the money an impressive enough gesture to get them to use reusable bags more often? My husband was impressed, and I believe the next time I suggest he grab a bag before heading to the store, he might do it.

It wasn't the money that impressed him; it was the gesture. It was recognition that he had done something a little praiseworthy. That nickel was like a gold star on top of a weekly third-grade spelling test. Remember those gold stars? When you got that gold star at the top of the page, you wanted to earn another gold star the following week.

So what do you think? Is the small rebate a useful symbol of a job well-done? Or am I over-thinking a nickel?

I wonder about the same question...?

I know penny pinching moms who aren't all that conscientious about environmental issues (they won't hesitate to use paper plates at every meal, for example), but who will use reusable bags for those nickels.

But yes, I agree, that for most people, the nickel is more like a gold star.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Whole Foods gives me a dime. Or they'll donate it to a local school district. I usually donate it under the logic that ten cents won't do me a whole heap of good, but several dimes might help a school.

Just because something can't be explained doesn't mean it becomes yours.

I wish our market had the option to donate; I'd use it. I used to tell them just not to give me the nickle, as I support the bags on my own, don't need enducements, and I support them supporting the bags, so better they keep it.

I gave up a while ago, because they're usually too fast to count my bags and subtract the money so it just wasn't worth the effort. If I had the option you do, I'd do it too.

Every bit counts, in so many small ways.

MI has bottle return, they're worth a dime here - but I don't really drink a lot of soda (shouldn't drink any, given how bad it is for you, but I mostly use it to mix with rum anyway...) so at most I'll have like five or six of em.

And when I see the families loading their cans and bottles into the machine, I pick out the nearest or poorest lookin one who has kids, and hand em over - I figure they need it more than I do, and while it's a tiny thing on a financial level, the greater part of the act itself is to touch them with a little more faith in humanity, an act of hope, however small.

It's not the money, it's the act, it's what it MEANS, that makes it important.

I agree, Frem. And here, too, people rifle through garbage cans to retrieve the money for them. I would imagine most places who have a large poor population see it now. It's a sad statement on our society that they do, in my opinion, but it does act to lessen the amount of sorting the refuse company has to do.

Our refuse company sorts EVERYTHING, which is what helped us reduce land waste to such a huge degree. But I agree, to me it's the act, not the money, I just found it interesting that the husband in questio was so taken by it; that's an aspect that hadn't occurred to me before. I just thought of the refund as a way to encourage people, not that the FACT of the refund would have the effect it did.
