When Conservative commentators like Dr. Charles Krauthammer, Brit Hume, Pat Buchanan and others say that Obama gave a magnificent speech, then it's time for some on the Right like Limbaugh and Ingraham to take a step back for a moment and reflect a bit more deeply on what Obama did at the service.

Like anything in life, sometimes things don't always go as planned. Obama planned for a speech to honor the fallen and praise the heroes there. What he and the organizers of the event didn't know, couldn't know, is perhaps that the people of Tucson needed something more than a somber, bellicose, boring, typical eulology type event. To me it looked and sounded like they were looking for something positive out of the event; something motivating and uplifting to help them deal with the tragedy and help get on with their lives. They wanted to hoot and cheer as a way of releasing anger and frustration. They set the tone, not Obama. A quarter way through his speech he recognized this, and as Krauthammer rightly noted afterwards, he brilliantly went with the flow and delivered one of the most moving and compelling speeches ever. I got to tell you, this die hard Conservative did all in my power to control my tears and not succomb to the powerful emotional imagery that Obama presented, but I could not. I wept like a baby many times, and that is something I never do. Will any of this last, and will this speech go down as something historic in the future? Who knows. But I'll never forget it.

Pat Buchanan wrote a piece today titled "Is Obama Leaving the Left Behind?" It discusses why he (and I) feel that Obama made a great speech:

"The day that President Obama departed for Arizona to address the nation on the Tucson massacre, Washington was abuzz.

Would he take the line of the hard left and call out the right for having created what columnist Paul Krugman called the "Climate of Hate" in which a mentally deranged Jared Lee Loughner had acted?

Would he lay moral responsibility for the slaughter at the feet of Fox News and Sarah Palin, as the wilder voices of the left have been doing nonstop since Saturday's shocking news?

Obama did the opposite, admonishing his allies as well as critics, "at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do, it's important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds."

Again and again, he returned to the theme. "Bad things happen, and we must guard against simple explanations in the aftermath.

"For the truth is that none of us can know exactly what triggered this vicious attack. None of us can know ... what thoughts lurked in the inner recesses of a violent man's mind. ... But what we cannot do is use this tragedy as one more occasion to turn on each other. ...

"If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate ... let's make sure ... it's not on the usual plane of politics and point-scoring and pettiness." No "lack of civility ... caused this tragedy."

Obama thus cut the ground out from under those exploiting the massacre and attempted murder of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to smear and exact retribution for the crushing repudiation they suffered on Nov. 2.

In one of the finer speeches of his career, Obama realized that, at this hour and in this tragedy, his country yearned to come together on the higher ground of grief for the fallen, celebration of those who behaved bravely and prayerful hope for the wounded.

By rising above "politics and point-scoring and partisanship" in Tucson, the president has recaptured some of the luster he had lost since that January two years ago."

I see the Story/Kane analogies persist despite the evidence at hand. I shall bring a reminder.

In any event, it is quite correct and worth repeating that all administrations twist events to their advantage.

I do not see the current administration as particular in this regard. I would agree with Story that it would require a psychological blindness not to see where this has been done in the past with equal or greater frequency and effect.

Damn again; here I thought he was admonishing BOTH sides to knock it off, that the “smearing” over the past two years had been going on rampantly from the right, and that one election was “suffering” caused by a “crushing repudiation”. I continue to maintain that the truth of the matter is that the majority who gave control to the House to Republicans voted out of PERSONAL fear over the economy and their own lives. It was a visceral reaction in the hopes the “other side” would fix things faster and a disappointment that Obama and the dems didn’t magically turn everything around. Wait and see.

It’s a pendulum, period. It’s seen Congressional approval ratings go up and down, approval ratings for whichever side is in power go up and down, and dramatic shifts either way. Sure, November was a pretty good thumping for an OFF-YEAR ELECTION, in which, despite a pretty hefty increase in interest this time, far fewer people vote than in an election year, and it spoke. So it doesn’t reflect the entire electorate, and some hard-core Republicans were stuck voting for righties who won the primaries despite being bad candidates. If it had been truly a “crushing repudiation”, Republicans would have taken the Senate, Nevada would have dumped Harry Reid, etc.

And when you cite specifics, do try to bear in mind Homeland Security, Patriot Act, “Preventative” War, illegal wiretapping, waterboarding, and all the rest of the power the previous administration gained by 9/11.
