Nah, I gotta agree with Rap. I've gotten these before, and had no problem reading the "challenging" sentence he put up in the video. Once more, the mythbusters/snopes mindset of denial fails.

You didn't break it that often. Every word has at least one correct letter in either the first or last position. Or has only 2-3 letters to switch around, like "of" and "the."

It's like this. You leave enough intact that you only have to switch 2-3 letters around at a time, placed at the correct positions of the word.

berakign = b + "era" + ki + "gn"
rwogn = "rwo" + "ng"

It would be much harder to figure out if the words were written:

knrabegi or nwgor

Here is the bottom line:

1. Yes, the human mind can read transposed letters or missing letters much faster than one woudl imagine. Yes, unless we're in early grade school, we read whole wrods at a time, as long as the 2-3 letter chunks are in the right positions.

2. Being able to read transposed letters fairly quickly doesn't mean we can't read words even FASTER had letters NTO been transposed.

3. Spelling is not just about not being able to read mispelled werds. We can all read "alright" or "peaked my intarest" or "I hav to chilren." It is abowt folowing standerdized rooles for comunication that make interpretations THAT much faster.

4. Speling maters.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't have a problem with occasionally misspelled words, since I figure some of them are just typos which we all are guilty of at one time or another. It can also be that people have heard a word but never seen it in print and spell it the way it sounds to them.

However, I do have a problem with those who seem to be proud of the fact that they don't care about spelling or grammar.

The English language is like any other tool. It is more effective if used correctly.

Bingo. Also, if it's never used properly in the first place, those misspelled words would be totally meaningless because they would lack the context of proper spelling.

If we scramble it too much, it becomes another word because english is full of anagrams. Bottom line: This is an inefficient language, it runs at about 40% efficiency, largely due to a preponderance of multisyllabic words and extraneous articles et al. Hence, our brain has plenty of time to unscramble, as long as there is no information loss.

Yes, how much proper spelling makes a difference is a function of how much one reads. The more you read, the more spelling matters.

It doesn't matter, does it? In time we will all write in nothing but emoticons and acronyms. Grammar nazis will say things like "Billy, u noob 'lol' goes @ teh end of teh sentence lolololol."

A pox upon prescriptive grammar. The only folk who give a damn about it are schoolmarms. And also, assholes who have no other ways to demonstrate their smugness. Or people learning a new language.

Anyway, grammar nazis (and spelling faeries, who are delicious) suffer from the retarded notion that there is a single, correct English (or language in general) and that those who stray from it must be corrected. This is bullshit. A pox upon RP english.

There is no such thing as a spelling mistake or error in grammar--only instances of non-compliance with arbitrary rules that reflect people's cultural biases and experience. Following the arbitrary rules helps clarity of communication--deviation from it demonstrates less favored status.

Nah, you missed the point entirely. As usual.

I read about three "words" of your first post, and next to nothing of any of DT's garble, because if I have to work to decipher what the hell you're trying to say, it's not worth my time. If you can't be bothered to communicate effectively, it's a bit presumptuous of you to ask ME to be bothered to try to make sense of the word salad you post.

When I see these "tests", I skip 'em. Want to convince me that you're actually an intelligent human being with smart things to say? Show me that you're capable of learning the English language, and you've gone a long way to making your case. If you can't learn how to spell the word "intelligent", for example, after REPEATED tries and corrections, you've shown me that you aren't worth wasting my time trying to communicate with, because you aren't willing to even open your mind enough to allow the possibility that you can still learn something.

If you want to behave and communicate like the hill folk, feel free. Just stop trying to pretend that you're some kind of genius while you're doing it. A genius would have learned the proper use of "whatsoever" by now, as well as when to use "a" and "an". If you can't figure out the most basic rules of grammar and spelling - or even the difference between the two! - then clearly you are no genius.

In my own limited experience, everyone I personally consider "educated" and "intelligent" knows and uses correct grammar and spelling. Sure, everyone makes errors, but for the most part, they don't say things like, "you arguemnet don maks sens." Those geniuses I know with spelling disabilities use prosthetics like spell checker.

So, in addition to making me work harder at reading sentences like the above and slowing down reading speed and comprehension (imagine an entire page written like that), very bad spelling and grammar imply poor education in English, or perhaps even low intelligence. I've got nothing against people with low intelligence or a disadvantaged education. But in an argument, it can be distracting.

Having said that, I don't care for spelling or grammar policing, esp on informal discussion boards. We're here to share ideas, not to cross every t and dot every i. Or to speak in grammatically correct complete sentences. Or to make sure no one ever mispells or mistpyes a single word.

As I said, you fail (again) to get the point.

It really is bewildering how you continue to be so oblivious.

I do see that you have some sort of inferiority complex. I never once claimed any sort of genius status, so I don't know where you're getting that idea. You're just so hung up on ad hominem attacks ( oops, was that too smarty pants for you ? ), personal insults, that you ignore the SUBSTANCE of the conversation. Likely because you're too rock stupid or stubborn in your views that you don't even want to be challenged, so instead, all you do is try to side track the issue, all together.

Okay, so let me address the issue about spelling... the example you gave is irrelevant. First of all, it wasn't about grammar it was about spelling. Secondly... have you ever tried those word unscramblers? They can take a five-letter word and scramble it so that it would take me ten minutes to figure out. So, spelling CAN be scrambled to the point where words are unrecognizable.

However, I do have uh bohn too pik with Inglish speling. Beeing uh mix uv German and French and Greek and Latin it haz abowt fiyv difurent speling roolz. Kan we mayk it fohnetik?

A far reach here - equivocation, ad hominem, AND strawman.

Rappy, this is you in a nutshell. You have nothing of substance to offer, so you resort to insult. You and Wulf constantly demonize "the Left" as a single entity - anything one liberal does, they're all guilty of. And then you come simpering in here, whining about the fact that you have deplorable communicative abilities, but you feel that you shouldn't be held to account for them.

Remember when we were discussing Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and I made the mistake of referring to Al Qaeda as "him", when I meant to refer to Bin Laden that way? You seized on it for days - literally DAYS - and couldn't talk of anything else. You had nothing of substance to offer in the discussion, just a nit-pick at my gaffe.

Odd that YOU would be offended by anyone doing the same to you.

Hey, if I screw up, have a ball. But don't whine when you're hanged with the same rope. It's disingenuous, and petty, and should be beneath you.

Of course, the irony of the original post wasn't lost on me, either. You started a whole thread about "grammar nazis" just to try to lure them out so you could whinge about them pointing out your atrocious command of the English language (a language I've little doubt you'd LOVE to be made by law the "official" language of the U.S.A.). So you start a thread to complain about grammar nazis, and you mangle the title ("nazis" should be capitalized, and the ellipsis is THREE periods, not four, not five, not nine, but THREE), and you probably still have no idea why people think you're an idiot and a troll.

I do believe your inferiority complex is showing. ;)

It wasn't in any way an insult. It was an objective assessment of the plain facts. That you don't like the truth or that it hurts your feelings doesn't make it an " insult ".

There was no "straw man" deception by my part, what so ever. It was a very legitimate analysis of how the MSM treats Right and Left wing personalities. And the same goes on here, as well.

And Kwickie, this is a message board. Not some peer reviewed technical journal, so your hyper obsession on grammar and spelling more and more proves my point.

You use meaningless issues like capitalization of NAZI to avoid dealing w/ the SUBSTANCE of the issues being discussed. You've done in it time and time again, in this very thread, as a means to interject personal insult and dismiss any and everything which is said by those with whom you disagree.

It's like you're too scared to even deal w/ an issue, so instead, you inflate the smallest infraction or error, and make THAT the focus of attention. You hope to dear god that you then aren't forced to actually THINK about anything of substance. It appears to be something pathological in your make up.

It's sad, really.

Again with the personal insults. "You don't like the truth"; "it hurts your feelings". You have no basis for such claims, yet you still sling such insults around as if they were "fact". You have no concept of "facts", as you've so often shown here for all to see.

Wouldn't you call that "obsession" about grammar? Oh - of course you wouldn't. Not when YOU do it. That's different. It always is with you, isn't it?

Nope, not a single personal insult in any of that, is there?

You keep whinging about "the SUBSTANCE" of an issue or thread, and what you can't see is that there IS NO SUBSTANCE to this thread. In fact, I can't really think of a single thing you've ever posted that had any real substance. Your entire worldview comes down to "Librul bad/GOP gud".

You know you changed your post, and wouldn't fess up to it. I cut/ copied the exact words, as you typed them. If you'd been man enough to just admit any typo or minor mishap on your part, I'd have left it at that. But, because of who you are, and your insecurities, you wouldn't ( and still won't ) admit it. Tells me a lot about who you really are.

And you brining up that single example doesn't in the least bit dispel the point I was making either. Once again, you try to divert away from the topic, and send the thread into another irrelevant tangent.

I know you're feigning and pretending that I'm insulting you, so that I'll blurt out some sort of actual insult, which in your mind would some how justify - something, I'm not sure what. Only you can answer that one. I've no interest in it.

You not liking what I say doesn't make it an insult.
