Dog starved and thrown away

Quote:Newark, New Jersey - Rescued just moments before being tossed into an apartment building's trash compactor, the starving, barely alive red pitbull has the luck of the Irish. On Wednesday, March 16, a maintenance worker had been gathering and cleaning up the garbage around the waste receptacles of the 22 story apartment house where he worked, when he noticed a garbage bag slightly moving. In the bag, was the emaciated, cold shadow of a dog that had been starved, bagged, and thrown down a garbage chute. The maintenance worker called Newark Animal Control, and Animal Control Officer Arthur Skinner picked up the dog and brought him to the Society where veterinarians and technicians tended to the dog who the staff named Patrick. He was put on intravenous fluids, and gently warmed with heating pads and blankets. Vet technician Gina De Salvo gently petted and stroked Patrick's head. Patrick survived the first part of his long journey to recovery, and his condition is reported to be guarded. Patrick was transported by ambulance to the Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls where he continues to be given blood transfusions, enjoyed a gentle bath, and even a short walk. Many thanks to the Associated Humane Society/Popcorn Zoo for reaching out to Patrick. If you would like to help Patrick, please contact the Garden State Veterinary Specialists at (732) 922-0011.

Quote:Update 3/21 Patrick is doing better and gaining strength everyday. I talked to the ER nurse today and she said he is very strong and hanging in there. I was also contacted by a reporter for The Star-Ledger and she asked me to email her pictures of Patrick and they are going to do a write up of the little man and hopefully someone will come foward to catch the SOB!! This is good news!

Quote:The veterinary staff immediately put him on intravenous fluid. His temperature was so low that it did not even register on the thermomenter. He was covered with heating pads and blnakets. Society vet tech Gina DeSalvo held the pit bull in her arms -- she soothed him, gave him warmth, comfort and bits of food. From that moment on, he looked up with gratitude in his eyes to all of the staff. After a brief time at the Society's Newark facility, he was ambulanced to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls -- a referral hospital with 24 hour emergency care. If he died during that night, we feel he would know that everyone loved and cared about him and treated him gently and lovingly. He amazed everyone at the Society and at Garden State by surviving with the 24 hour emergency care that they rendered. He was given a blood transfusion, a bath -- and even a walk! The Society's Res-Q Fund is just what is needed for emergency situations as this. The expenses involved are high and the effort to save this dog comes at a great cost. Although emaciated dogs have come in for our help, we have never seen one this wasted. There will be a long road to recovery and your donations to the Res-Q Fund will help Patrick.
Quote:Patrick is pretty tired today, he remains weak but is able to go out for short walks. He has not gained any weight but he has not lost any either which is a good sign. This morning he barked for the first time when he saw another patient being fed. Patrick is on a very strict diet so that his system can handle the intake of food. His coat is really growing in and looks shiny and healthy. We have been informed by the New Jersey SPCA that they have identified the person who is alleged to have deprived Patrick of food and care.

Quote:Originally posted by Hardware: I've rescued neglect dogs before. None as bad as Patrick, but you can't feed them too much food, nor too rich a food to quickly. After being starved their systems can actually crash if they get too much fat all at once. Pancreatitis is a real danger for a dog this starved. Still, just seeing him able to sit up is a good sign. Sadly, since he's still a puppy he may be retarded from being this seriously neglected. Their bodies will stop developing the brain if they are malnourished as a puppy. One of my pits was malnourished as a pup and he's thick as a post. A good dog, just not so swift on the uptake. The more I get to know people the more I like my dogs. ...and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. Luke 22:36

Nonetheless, bless them... Updates as of Saturday:Quote:Patrick is pretty tired today, he remains weak but is able to go out for short walks. I hope they catch the bastard...tho' punishments for mistreatment of animals are far too lenient. I hope they at the very LEAST make him pay for all Patrick's care, dammit. He does look somewhat better, anyway, and his coat is obviously healthier...as of today: Hippie Operative Nikovich Nikita Nicovna Talibani, Contracted Agent of Veritas Oilspillus, code name “Nike”, signing off

My work is my "safe zone" so I don't like it when unexpected non human creatures interfere with my safe zone. We've had a few people come in with service animals over the years but not very many, breaths sigh of relief. I know that's mean but I'm just bein honest. But its cool if no one minds having animals there for people to be able to take theirs ... I guess ... I'm trying to identify with that need of folks, but I really am having a hard time ... but I'm trying to be socially ept and try to appease the masses.
