WHEDONFEST 2011: A “CAN'T STOP THE SERENITY” WEEKEND EVENT

Joss Whedon Fans return to Kentucky for Can't Stop the Serenity Charity.

Whedonites United present their third annual WhedonFest, a weekend-long convention, to be held August 5-7 at Barefoot Republic in Scottsville, KY. All proceeds will be donated to charities designated by the Can't the Stop the Serenity Global organization and Whedonites United.

Joss Whedon fans have repeatedly done the unlikely: turning a failed movie into a long-running and much-loved TV series (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), then turning a canceled series into a movie destined to become a cult classic (Serenity), and then turning repeat screenings of that movie into a series of worldwide popular fund-raising events to keep the fandom alive while promoting gender equality (Can't Stop the Serenity). Since 2006, the global Can't Stop the Serenity movement has raised over half a million dollars for charity, and included events in scores of cities all over the world.

For the past two years, Whedonites United have held WhedonFest, a weekend-long CSTS event, first in LaVergne, Tennessee, and then in Scottsville, Kentucky. With the help of our all-volunteer staff, we raised over $2,000 dollars for charity both times! Whedon fans from across the country gathered for the fun, which culminated with the traditional CSTS screening of Serenity on Sunday afternoon. We liked Barefoot Republic campground in Scottsville so well that we're coming back again!

WhedonFest is scheduled for August 5-7. Designed to welcome fans of all Whedon's work, the programming will cover Buffy, Firefly, Angel, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Dollhouse, as well as Joss's upcoming Avengers movie. Activities include panel discussions and activity workshops, guest speakers, a “Shindig” with costume contest, and more. Our raffle and auction will include both official promotional items and crafts handmade by our sponsors.

WhedonFest will be held at Barefoot Republic, near Scottsville, KY. This non-profit, handicapped-accessible campground is managed from Nashville, and centrally located to Nashville, Louisville and Knoxville. The site features comfortable treehouse-style cabins, a paintball field (for our second annual re-enactment of the Battle of Serenity Valley), and river access for those interested in kayaking or canoeing. The delicious meals are prepared or planned by the many talented cooks on our staff.

All proceeds from this event will go to charity. All Can't Stop the Serenity Events donate a minimum of 75% to Equality Now as the globally supported charity. Events are allowed to allocate the remainder for local charities if desired. WhedonFest will donate 15% of the proceeds to Kids Need to Read, an organization co-founded by P.J. Haarsma and Firefly's own Nathan Fillion, and 10% to New Leash on Life, a local animal welfare organization.

Whedonites United is thrilled to announce that we have tentatively scheduled live music for our event!

There will be a groupsing of “Once More with Feeling”, with Kell Coulter of the Nashville band Circle of Signs on keyboard. (No audio or visuals from the episode will be used, in order to abide by copyright laws.) For our Shindig, we will have Celtic music provided by Kell on harp and Connor Davidson on bagpipes.

Kell has payed the harp and keys professionally for eight years, including at historical re-enactments, and with Circle of Signs for three. Connor has played the bapipes for six years, including with Celtic music groups and the Eerie Radio paranormal podcast. They are both affiliated with the Highland Rim Scottish Society, and recently performed their first gig together as Ghostpiper and Siren Harper

We're gonna try and go this year, last year was too hot for us...I cook like bacon

We hope to see you there. Even if it's hot, the facilities are temperature-controlled, and you don't have to be outside if you don't want to.

They are a steampunk-inspired band that will be playing a mix of their own songs and songs from the Jossverse. We're very excited to have them! Sadly, Siren Harper and Ghostpiper will not be playing the Shindig, but Siren Harper's Once More With Feeling groupsing is still on.
