Glad you brought it up. I actually have been thinking about this for a while now ever since I started on the 2.0 site. It's in the early stages, but I'm currently working on an API for the site so that any mobile client that I might write in the future will have something to talk to.

DREAMTROVE

I am trying to get into app programming. It looks to me like there's a major hurdle getting to work at all but that it's worth getting over and once you get rolling it will be pretty easy.

That said, I've been sort of looking for people to discuss the initial hurdle of getting it working.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Time permitting, we can discuss it here on FFF.NET. I'm new to the whole mobile app programming thing too. My biggest hurdle right now is just getting together the equipment necessary to write an app, which, unfortunately for me, happens to be the purchase of a Mac since I own an iPhone and would like to develop for it.

Of course, buying a Mac isn't necessary if you're writing apps for the Android. The SDK and all the development tools for the Android are readily available for all the major OS platforms at no cost, which is great, but I don't own an Android phone and currently have no desire to write apps for it that I can't run outside of the phone simulator.

I've been saving up to buy a Mac for a while now and it looks like I'll have enough after my IRS refund to get one, which solves my hardware issue. After that it's just a matter of learning a whole new platform and language, which will take a while because the last time I used a Mac was when my wife had a MacBook in college.

Coming from a unix background, I really disliked the Mac back then and haven't touched one since because it was too user friendly and wasn't fun to work (hack) on. Hopefully things have changed by now, especially with the mobile apps development. I suppose it's a whole new world.

What are your hurdles? Are you developing for the iPhone or Android?
