I love being here on RWED. But recently, I've found myself feeling overwhelmed and depressed by almost everything I see in the news. From the quasi-genocide going on the Middle East to Godboldo's daughter being sexually assaulted after forced into foster care for no good reason, the world doesn't look like a nice place right now.

I am seriously considering just not reading the news anymore. I hate to stick my head in the sand, but the world has become a horror movie to me. Is it wrong to turn it off for a while?

What are my alternatives?

Burying your head in the sand is quiet, warm and cozy but you just can't see what's creepin up behind ya.!!!!

Oh my god, CTS,

There cannot be anything wrong with turning it off for a while! And there can be great harm in not listening to your intuition and doing what your spirit calls you to do. Walking away from the so-called news could be the best thing you ever did for yourself. You'll be welcomed back no questions asked I promise. In the meantime, cultivate some small growing thing or other. Write poetry. Build some furniture. Catch up on your reading. Organize the best parties you'll ever go to. Give yourself time to dream some dreams and let the world take care of itself for a while. I promise it will all still be here when you get back.

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hello,

The news is not Real Life, and neither is this forum. Both are just packages of information, prepared by people with a point of view or an agenda.

A warm day. A friend. A kiss. A good meal.

That's life. Go enjoy that for a while.

DREAMTROVE

CTS

Don't worry, if anything happens, we'll let you know. If it's really important, someone will probably post something about it, or I'll send you an email. Move over to somewhere silly like Talk story. I did that for a while and will again. I actually get tired of the same old topics.

At the moment, I'm forced to deal with Fracking, because that's something that can kill and harm me and mine, and it's something that I can do something about.

Here's a good measure before getting involved in a topic. Ask yourself, "Is this really something I can do anything about?" If not, don't spend too much time on it. I admit, our invasion of Libya is something I have a serious problem with, but the only thing I can do about it is not vote for Obama in 2012, but even that won't do much if there's no serious alternative. I mean, if the alternative is Ron Paul, I can go to work for him, but if the alternative is JEB Bush, we'll be bombing either way. But right now, there's not anything I can do about it.

The media is going to hit you with a dozen crises at once that you can't do a thing about, and some will be echoed here. Some things here we post will be things you can't do a thing about either, like my sister's cancer. If you feel helpless, don't worry about it. There will be other things you can help with down the road. Don't get obsessed with the things that you can't fix, there are 7 billion people in the world, and if we all do something to fix something, it will work out alright.

This is part of why I posted the thread "Problems that don't exist." It's important that we not devote our efforts to solve problems which don't exist. Gays are getting married. If someone devotes their efforts to stop that, someone else will devote effort to not stop it, and we'll be canceling each other out. Gays are still getting AIDS. We can all unite to not have that happen, but chances are, if you're not a researcher, there's nothing you can do about it, so don't sweat it, there are other people who can.

So, at the moment, hopefully, I can do something about Fracking, and keeping the water supply clean. I would also like to stop deforestation and eugenics, but at the moment, I can't do anything about that. Maybe the future will present an opportunity.

As for news, it's designed to be bad, it's designed to make you feel helpless. It's designed to distract you from the things you actually can do.

Stay in touch, and don't let yourself be dragged down into the whirlpool.

Anthony,

you're well on your way to being a Taoist ;)

That is no dilemma, afterall there are worse places one can stick one's head. Think of how many posters here have em up their asses.

Really, get away from it. Everyone has a tolerance for something and staying beyond your tolerance will only do you harm.

Do something you haven't done for a while. The weather is turning warmer and maybe go out and enjoy the outdoors.

I'm looking forward to tending my grapevines this weekend.

If I remember right, you're in a small village in Peru, which seems to me a pretty nice place to take it easy. Sometimes all anyone can do is focus on what's close to you, and if where you are right now is peaceful, it's not a bad thing to soak it up.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Well, kiddo, you're not alone! I stopped too just recently; both because it's too depressing and, for me, too astonishing. I never thought I'd see what's happening in the country today. I always thought things would settle down, but I'm starting to go the way of the "Armageddon" believers...

I watch Law & Order reruns I've seen a dozen times--Dog Whisperer, the History Channel, bad SciFi B-movies, Dogtown...anything but the news. I watch so much 'cuz I'm stuck in the recliner a lot (physical problems), or I'd go out and do other stuff (which I also do as much as I can).

DO take care of YOU, by all means. Watch something that makes you laugh, even if you're laughing AT it, or read a good book. Better for your sanity!

MAGONSDAUGHTER

I love Dog Whisperer, learnt a lot from ol Cesare.

I rarely watch tv news, haven't done so for over 10 years and don't feel like I am any less informed for it. I scan the newspaper on the net during the week, and sometimes don't read anything other than the weather. sometimes I buy the weekend papers, because they are bit and meaty with lots of magazines, lifestyle stuff and quizzes. I usually read the opinion pieces and that is about it. I watch loads of documentaries on the tv, because I like them and they give a fuller picture of a story. I read books.

News does depress people. Its actually one of the recommendations for people with depression, that they stop watching news. The world is a large place, something really crappy is happening somewhere at any given time, and mostly we are powerless to alter that. But hearing about all the bad stuff - stuff that you can't fix - on a daily basis makes people lose hope. Basically we can only really hope to connect and care for our families and communities, and deal with the bad stuff that happens daily there without everything else we get exposed to.
