A new study published in Nature Reviews-Cancer provides an historic and detailed explanation about how THC and natural cannabinoids counteract cancer, but preserve normal cells.

The study by Manuel Guzmán of Madrid Spain found that cannabinoids, the active components of marijuana, inhibit tumor growth in laboratory animals. They do so by modulating key cell-signalling pathways, thereby inducing direct growth arrest and death of tumor cells, as well as by inhibiting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumor.

The Guzman study is very important according to Dr. Ethan Russo , a neurologist and world authority on medical cannabis: "Cancer occurs because cells become immortalized; they fail to heed normal signals to turn off growth. A normal function of remodelling in the body requires that cells die on cue. This is called apoptosis, or programmed cell death. That process fails to work in tumors. THC promotes its reappearance so that gliomas, leukemias, melanomas and other cell types will in fact heed the signals, stop dividing, and die."

"But, that is not all," explains Dr. Russo: "The other way that tumors grow is by ensuring that they are nourished: they send out signals to promote angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Cannabinoids turn off these signals as well. It is truly incredible, and elegant."

In other words, this article explains several ways in which cannabinoids might be used to fight cancer, and, as the article says, "Cannabinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies.
Usually, any story that even suggests the possibility of a new treatment for cancer is greeted with headlines about a "cancer cure" however remote in the future and improbable in fact it might be. But if marijuana is involved, don't expect any coverage from mainstream media, especially since mainstream editors have been quietly killing this story for the past thirty years

That's right, news about the abilility of pot to shrink tumors first surfaced, way back in 1974. Researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice - lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.

The Washington Post reported on the 1974 study - in the "Local" section - on Aug. 18, 1974. Under the headline, "Cancer Curb Is Studied," it read in part: "The active chemical agent in marijuana curbs the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice and may also suppress the immunity reaction that causes rejection of organ transplants, a Medical College of Virginia team has discovered." The researchers "found that THC slowed the growth of lung cancers, breast cancers, and a virus-induced leukemia in laboratory mice, and prolonged their lives by as much as 36 percent."
"News coverage of the Madrid discovery has been virtually nonexistent in this country. The news broke quietly on Feb. 29, 2000 with a story that ran once on the UPI wire about the Nature Medicine article," complained MarijuanaNews.com editor Richard Cowan , who said he was only able to find the article through a link that appeared briefly on the Drudge Report Web page. "The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times all ignored the story, even though its newsworthiness is indisputable: a benign substance occurring in nature destroys deadly brain tumors," added Cowan.

On March 29, 2001, the San Antonio Current printed a carefully researched, bombshell of a story by Raymond Cushing titled, "POT SHRINKS TUMORS; GOVERNMENT KNEW IN '74." Media coverage since then has been nonexistant, except for a copy of the story on Alternet.

It is hard to believe that the knowledge that cannabis can be used to fight cancer has been suppressed for almost thirty years , yet it seems likely that it will continue to be suppressed. Why?

According to Cowan, the answer is because it is a threat to cannabis prohibition . "If this article and its predecessors from 2000 and 1974 were the only evidence of the suppression of medical cannabis, then one might perhaps be able to rationalize it in some herniated way. However, there really is massive proof that the suppression of medical cannabis represents the greatest failure of the institutions of a free society, medicine, journalism, science, and our fundamental values," Cowan notes.

Millions of people have died horrible deaths and in many cases, familes exhausted their savings on dangerous, toxic and expensive drugs. Now we are just beginning to realize that while marijuana has never killed anyone, marijuana prohibition has killed millions.

In OR, people can use marijuana for medical purposes, for pain relief in chronic illnesses such as cancer etc.

Here in CA, too. Along with Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. In fact, I'm on my way to get some, it being almost the first of the month. But neither ours nor any other of the state laws legalizing it are "legal" according to the feds, which makes for a totally ridiculous situation. America's funny...and not just in the "ha ha" way...

Yup. The propaganda put out by the government in their "war" on marijuana is hysterical to watch...I bought a couple of DVD's of this stuff and we had a ball laughing at it.

As an aside, I went to pick up my "monthly" amount of dope yesterday. I'm freezing as much as I can afford, in the hopes that when my yearly "okey-dokey" runs out, I won't have to pay their bloody "tax" to get another and will have enough to last a few years more.

I happened to be wearing one of my Serenity t-shirts. So as I'm walking out, one of the guys behind the counter smiles and says "I loved that movie!" I said "and Firefly!" He'd never heard of it. So I clued him in, and he's off to rent the DVDs of the series post haste! Hey, I made another Browncoat!!!

Extra fun since that's how I came to Firefly, by initially falling in love with Serenity without knowing a thing about Firefly!

So why has it been suppressed? Well, has BigPharma™ invented a fully synthetic, patentable version of THC yet that it can market for $50 a pill?

There's your answer, I'd say.

Actually, they have synthesized the THC, tho' I don't think it's available to the public. And no, that's not why it's suppressed, I think you know that Mike. It used to be legal; so did cocaine and morphine at one time. It's a "drug"...gawd forbid we should have anything legal that lets us escape reality...except booze, of course. Booze and I never got along, and I had a fall-down-drunk brother-in-law who lived with us off and on for twenty years, so I had no desire to change booze's attitude toward me or mine toward it. So marijuana is my "evening cocktail" and I use it for pain occasionally. It's "medically prescribed" for me, as a bipolar, and nowadays they have all KINDS of ways to ingest it for those who don't want to smoke. You wouldn't believe...right down to marijuana BISCOTTI, believe it or not!

Here's one for you. It's been posited that people my age's distrust of the government stems from the idiotic bullshit they put out on drugs--like the video above--and Vietnam, and that guys coming home from 'Nam told their friends how it REALLY was, and how dope really was. Once kids like me tried it for themselves, and heard the truth about 'Nam, we began mistrusting ANYTHING the government told them, which has carried on to today. Maybe that's really when America lost it's "innocence", who knows?

Point being, at one time such drugs were legal, and were perfectly fine, but then came the pressure to outlaw them, one at a time, and "force" you to get your drugs from a licensed dealer (pharmacist) by prescription... and so it goes, right up to now, when a common anti-premature-birth compound is now patented by a pharmacological company and sold for $2000 per dose, when it used to be over-the-counter at $10 a pop.

BigPharma isn't necessarily AGAINST legal marijuana. Neither is Big Tobacco. They're just not in favor of is YET. That's because they don't have their infrastructure set up yet to take advantage of its legalization.

Once upon a time, there was a movement to get sodas out of our schools. Coke and Pepsi, rather than being at each other's throats, were united in their opposition to such measures. And then, remarkably, both companies had a complete change of heart, and decided that our children's health really WAS the most important thing in the world to them. Oh, and they also happened to have bought up all the major juice and bottled-water manufacturers in the meantime, and discovered that rather than sell kids a soda for $0.50 a can, you can sell them a bottle of tapwater for $1.25 a bottle!

So tobacco and pharmaceutical companies will make a mint off legalized pot, but what they didn't count on was the War on (some) Drugs™ taking on a kind of life of its own, and becoming a bit of a Frankenstein's monster in the process. At some point, they lost control of it, and haven't been able to get it back. YET. But while they publicly decry the legalization of pot, they are privately setting up their infrastructure to take advantage of it WHEN it happens (not IF, but WHEN).

You didn't think all those bottles of booze that flowed after the repeal of the 18th Amendment all got distilled and bottled that day, did you? ;)

Thing is, I think America loses its innocence every generation, for each successive generation. For some, it was the assassination of Kennedy. For others it was the McCarthy hearings. For my generation, it was Iran-Contra, Contras, Eugene Hasenfuss, and pretty much the entire Reagan era. For some younger than me, it was Waco. Or Gulf War I. Or 9/11. Or Gulf War II.

Every generation finds out one way or another that their country was never truly "innocent". It often leads them to question what else they were lied to about, and what (if anything) they WEREN'T told lies about.

My understanding is that cannabanoids are different to THC, and marijuana contains both. Interestingly, THC is linked to psychosis, whereas having a greater ratio of cannabanoids to THC prevents those symptoms. That is why high THC yeilding dope like skunk has a bad reputation.

I believe that sythetic cannabanoids have been produced, but I'm not sure for what purpose.

I've had a couple of bad experiences with dope, where I experienced psychotic like symptoms and it always made me wonder whether what I smoked had the high THC low cannabanoid ratio.

Magon's, I'm really glad those symptoms were temporary for you and only when you were smoking it. In general, if a person has a predisposition towards developing mental health differences, marijuana can bring that out in them, not cause it, but bring it out. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. I've heard of people who hit the MK and have mental illness and the MK doesn't make it worse, but as a general rule I advise people with the predisposition to lay off.

There is some fairly recent research into the effects of THC - I'm not saying that it causes long term mental illness, anymore than LSD causes you to hallucinate all the time after the event, but that the actual experience is rather unpleasant, feeling a bit dissociated and paranoid, having disordered thoughts etc

Yeah, Mike, I think you're right. But I think before the 60s, when women were homemakers and divorce was an ugly word, etc., America WAS much more innocent and believed their government more. Or maybe "more Americans" is the way to put it. Kennedy's assassination has been pointed to many times as the beginning of the loss of innocence, but who knows?

Right on about the cannabanoids. We make our own, an article on which I posted a while back. There are kinds of marijuana too--"Sativa" is the one which more often causes the physical problems, from what I've read. Indica less so--maybe that's part of the cannabanoid thing, I dunno. Skunk is cheap and the only negative I've ever gotten from it is that, if I'm already tired, it puts me right to sleep. I can't afford the more expensive stuff, and Skunk is Sativa, but luckily it doesn't give me any problems.

The thing about psychosis was covered in that article on cannabanoids; I know for some people it can make them very anxious, nervous or paranoid. For me, dope relaxes me and lets me mellow out in the evenings--the only time I smoke it--which helps my bipolarity. But again, as with virtually every drug of every kind, each person experiences them individually. Choey can't even smoke dope, either she vomits or it makes her hypomanic, which obviously isn't good for someone with Bipolar I! I'm glad it works for me, since I dislike booze so much...
