Huh. The origin has to do with Margaret Thatcher. She is also known for soft ice cream, and the resulting twist cone. I always thought her supply side economic theories were genuine, and Reagan's were based on "How can we make a fast buck off of this?"

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

Umm... I do believe the origin has to do with Star Wars but Margaret Thatcher was elected prime minister on May 4th 1979 and a newspaper ad in the London Evening News read ''May the 4th Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.''

Because the Tories were Star Wars fans

No, I'm not. Thatcher was part of the team of confectioneers that brought us soft ice cream. Apparently, that's a better resume for a world leader than movie actor, because she never mistakenly thought that something that happened to a cone of ice cream had happened to the UK.

ETA: Oh, the star wars thing? No, I'm not kidding about that either. Some folks think it was the star wars release date, which was the 25th. It was the Tories chanting "May the fourth be with you" that caught on and made it star wars day.

ETA2: Happy, yes, you are correct. Tories were star wars fans (some of them.) But those ones, yes.

And the pun had been in use for a couple years already before Thatcher's election - she just appropriated it. And even then... do you honestly think ANYONE is referring to her when they say it?

This thread is about Star Wars, not conspiracy theories.

That said, impromptu poll! What force philosophy do you like? Classic Jedi? Sith? Grey Jedi?

I DON'T like the one force philosophy that's super fatalistic, can't remember the name, though I admit it's an interesting concept at least.

I like the Grey Jedi and their take on appropriate and acceptable emotions, though I question some aspects of them. Some of the early ones come across as amoral rather than between Good and Evil (neutral alignment).

I like the Corellian Jedi tradition, though it's really only been mentioned in passing. They played the guardian role alongside their fellow Jedi, but where known to have a bit of a rebellious streak, and to do things a mite differently. I think of them somewhere between neutral-good and chaotic-good. Probably dangerously close to 'Grey Jedi' from the council's point of view.

Of course, this tradition might not really exist, because since it was alluded to in rogue squadron novels (and maybe expanded on in 'I, Jedi' I don't remember) the prequels and other books have established that Jedi within that 1,000 year period were not allowed to marry, have children, hold office, etc... which would mean Corran Horn's grandfather or great-grand (Hal Horn? Valen Horn?) or whatever could not have been a member of the Jedi Order. Confusion...

The Jensaarai had an interesting thing going on as well, a curious version of the sith tradition that became less aggressive over generations to the point that when Luke Skywalker encountered them, he believed they were not actually tainted by the darkside. In the Star Wars saga ed rpg they can make themselves invisible to electronic surveillance and enhance their armor with the force!

Oh my gosh, I love those novels. Those and Timothy Zahn's books would be perfect adaptions for movies.

The Corellian Jedi could still exist, and they probably WERE Grey Jedi, because it's said they operated independently of the Council. There's hints though that the Council would work with them whenever they were in the Corellia jurisdiction.

I believe the Sith tradition is not necessarily inherently evil. Though there's definitely some not-nice interpretations. The ones that are only interested in Power have definite evil tendencies, but there seems to be quite a few interpretations that just believe in personal freedom. And while they might then act selfish and self-centered, they don't seem inherently malicious or out to hurt people.

Admiral Thrawn was one of the more interesting big bads. Especially considering, it's questionable whether he was really bad. I wonder how the Yuzzhan Vong would have fared if he were around to greet them.

Timothy Zahn is my favorite Author, I discovered him via Star Wars and read some of his other sci fi books like The Icarus Hunt, Angelmass and The Midnight Train to Rigel I better redirect myself back to star wars...

When you put it that way, it does make sense. I guess this puts me in the Grey Jedi camp, or at least the Corellian Grey Jedi camp.

Sure, as were many others, including use the farce, use the fork, etc. The application to use the fourth was by her fans, who were geeks, hence, the 4th of may, her election day. I got it off of wikipedia, it wasn't my own theory, nor arcane knowledge I possessed. I just wondered when the 4th of may thing started, so I looked it up.

Ever stopped to wonder why April 20th is pot day, or 4:20 PM is pot time? (Similar to the release date theory, there is a bogus theory going around about a "resolution 420" to legalize pot, but snopes killed that one.)

Anyway, back to topic

Hello,

I was always bothered by the organized Force cults, both Jedi and Sith. There is a lot of telling people what they are allowed to feel and when they should feel it, and who they must obey.

It seems to me that in this Universe, the Force was discovered a long time back. Various parties sought to control this dangerous new Force, and created different cult/government mechanisms to do so.

Very shady stuff.

I know the Emperor's "give in to your anger" has come to define the Sith in pop culture, but there's a lot more nuance here that doesn't come across.

However, I will agree there's a troubling Nietzschean element to the Sith belief, personified in their own version of an Ubermensch. So Sith beliefs lead to dictatorships, treachery, and the Empire as much as they potentially lead to emotional and personal freedom. This mentality about power seems to have come in large part from the Dark Jedi that left the Order and found the Sith worlds, and it's reflected in the Sith Code they created (an obvious rip-off of the Jedi Code).

Humans weren't the founders of Jedism or the Sith, and there's also cultures that predate the relative philosophies. However, those cultures and their methods of controlling the force did lead them to creating empires in their own fashion, so I would agree that it probably was not an entirely innocent process. And it might be questionable using the Force like some unlimited and unexpendable magic, especially considering where it comes from.
