I just saw this on the news and it seems it probably is a hoax but if it is a legitimate image then what do you think? Optical illusion? Some rock formation? It certainly doesnt look like a natural formation to my untrained eye. If it is a legitimate image I wonder if the Mars Recon Observer is able to be retasked to get some high res shots of the area?

I'm pretty sure it's one of these...

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

The mental leaps this guy makes are pretty outrageous. Something out of the ordinary appears on a computerized "map", and it's instantly a space station or a weapon. "It's definitely not a rock or a mountain", he says, which he has no way of knowing. What it DEFINITELY is or isn't, we don't know. It could be a computer-generated "remnant", banding caused by tiling in the image-generation algorithm (you see a lot of that in videogame backgrounds, where it's supposed to look natural and random, but you see clear banding, striations, and patterns), or even a completely natural occurrence on the surface of the planet itself (ice formed into puddles along "flow lines" in the bottoms of drifts, for instance?).

It amuses me when someone sees something they can't immediate explain, and instantly leaps to the supernatural or alien to explain it. Nazca Lines? Had to be aliens! They're too big to be seen except from the air! (Although too small to be seen from orbit, so kinda useless as interplanetary guideposts...)

Agree 100% Kwicko. The commentator is ridiculous. The image is quite probably as you suggest some computer generated anomaly but I would still like a better look at the area. It warrants further investigation.

Oh, certainly it does.

It reminds me of the "Atlantis" stuff that came up in the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa, a few years ago on GoogleEarth, where there were some "geometric"-looking shapes seen in the ocean bed, but which were, of course, tiling remnants from the software plugging in tiled images where no actual images were available. It certainly LOOKED like remnants of city blocks, laid out with great precision and planning! ;)

Not really, he posts other places, I think it's politics itself which is an anathema. No sane person would want partisanship on their main page. It would automatically alienate half the population. Here, since we're bipartisan, it would alienate almost everyone.

DT, google, :))

I think people want to believe in aliens and the fae and Atlantis because they are exciting, out of the ordinary, something different than the run of the mill everyday reality. So when they see things that are unexplained or could lend to such ideas they get excited.
