The hacker (or hackers) took a while to build up steam with their stream of misinformation. The first few messages they posted began with "@BarackObama";, meaning they'd only appear in the timelines of people who follow Fox News and the Presidential account.

Later messages changed tactics and used a hashtag. Many people saw through the hoax immediately, but you know what Twitter is like: the hashtag took on a life of its own, and became a meme within minutes.

The hoax had added weight thanks to its origin from a professional news organisation, which helped it speed its way on via retweets. At the time of writing, the fake posts were still visible on the compromised Twitter feed, between two and three hours after they'd been posted.

Why anyone would be surprised that wrong information would be put out by FauxNews in the first place defeats me. But I do recognize it was a good 4th of July joke, albeit not a great one.

There's no denying that Fox News claimed that the President had been assassinated.

That's a bit harsher than just calling him a dick, but that's exactly how the right wing operates in this country, so it's really not even a surprise that they'd do such a thing. Hell, there's more than likely an e-mail from one of the higher-ups at the network ordering them to do it, like they've done many times before with other matters.

So, if someone gets caught creating a hoax or any general havoc online through hacking someone's account, is there any way to catch and punish them? I've been wondering that for a while now.
