Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

We're back down to the 70s and forecast to stay there a while; once again, my heart goes out to everyone else and oh, HOW I wish we could export some of our coolness:
Quote:

Nearly half of U.S. population facing extreme heat. Excessive-heat watches, warnings and heat advisories were in effect in more than 30 states July 21st, in what the weather service described as "a large portion of the central U.S. and Ohio River Valley, as well as portions of the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states. Temperatures will feel like 100 to 110 degrees or higher during the afternoon hours."

The heat wave in recent days has brought heat index values -- which measure how hot it feels -- to as high as 131, the weather service said.

Heat indices on Tuesday reached 129 in Newton, Iowa; 121 in Taylorville, Illinois; 122 in Gwinner, North Dakota; and 123 in Hutchinson, Minnesota.

Minneapolis recorded its highest dew point ever, 82 degrees, on Tuesday. The dew point temperature is a measure of atmospheric moisture.

Part of what makes the heat wave so dangerous is that it offers no break, even at night. Chicago on Tuesday tied its record for the warmest low temperature of 78 degrees. In Rockford, Illinois, temperatures dropped down only to 76 degrees -- the warmest on record.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said people in areas affected by extreme heat should drink more water than usual -- and not wait until they feel thirsty. "Avoid alcohol or liquids containing high amounts of sugar," the CDC says.

The CDC also recommends taking cool showers or baths and avoiding direct sunlight. "Check on those most at-risk twice a day," the CDC said. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/07/20/heat/index.html

I hope it breaks soonest, meanwhile, please "be careful out there".

And of course DTE responded with rolling blackouts, on top of not fixing the already broken stuff, then whining for rate increases...

Folks have started throwing stuff at DTE trucks, which is kinda counterproductive you ask me, cause they can't fix anything if you're bombing them with rocks, should be bloody thankful they even bothered to show up.

Oh, and one retired electrical engineer is apparently under arrest for repairing some of that shit himself when DTE couldn't be bothered to get around to it, but I figure with a minimum of press involvement they'll drop that one like a hot poker.

Angry people is bad enough, angry people plus extreme heat can be dangerous - it's a known fact that violence within cities doubles when the temp clears 90F, and no one has ever done too much serious study as to why.

Stupid too, cause taking it out on the poor grunts trying to fix things while management fumbles is counterproductive, but try telling angry people anything sometimes.

No worries - RushBaugh says it's not really that hot; it's just a giant government conspiracy to make people THINK it's hot.

I remember taking a criminology class in college and we did talk about how when it gets hot the crime rate seems to go up but there wasn't a specific reason sited as to why. One theory was that since its hot in summer and kids are out of school, more crime is being committed and thus the corrilation between hot weather and crime is seen, since kids are out of school and bored when its hottest outside. But I don't really buy that one except in certain areas where most crime comes from the juvenile contingent. My personal theory is that when it gets hot people's brains don't function as well and clearly so they get tempermental and do things that they might not ordinarily because they're frustrated and hot and they aren't thinking straight because ... they're frustrated and hot. I know when I'm really hot I don't think straight, that's why I stay away from Eastern Oregon, it gets really hot in the summer there and when we went catfishing near the Idaho border I had to go take a nap because my brain felt like it was short circuiting.
