Church says sorry for forced adoptions
July 25, 2011 - 3:52PM

The head of the healthcare arm of the Catholic Church apologised in Newcastle today to the victims of forced adoption practices dating back 50 years.

The apology follows an admission by Catholic Health Australia that "a small number" of church-run hospitals and women's homes maintained unwanted adoption practices from the 1950s to the 1970s.

At least 150,000 Australian women reportedly had their babies taken against their will by some churches and adoption agencies.

Chief executive Martin Laverty said he was prepared to front a Senate inquiry to make an expression of sorrow and regret if such an apology brought healing and comfort to the women who had their new-born babies forcibly removed.

"It's with a deep sense of regret, a deep sense of sorrow that practices of the past have caused ongoing pain, suffering and grief to these women, these brave women in Newcastle but also women around Australia," Mr Laverty said.

Mr Laverty said his organisation only became aware of the women's experiences in June.

"These practices of the past are no longer tolerated, nor by today's laws, and are deeply regrettable," he said in a submission to an upper house committee investigating the Commonwealth's contribution to former forced adoption policies and practices.

"We acknowledge the pain of separation and loss felt then and now for the mothers, fathers, children, families and others involved in the practices of the time.

"For the pain that arises from practices of the past, we are genuinely sorry."

In some cases, the adoption practices had been "devastating and had ongoing impacts" on families.

Juliette Clough was just 16 when she was forced to give up her baby boy at a Catholic-run hospital in Newcastle in 1970.

"They just snatched away the baby," she said today, adding at the time her ankles were strapped to the bed and she had been "gassed".

"You weren't allowed to see him or touch him, anything like that, or hold him and it was just like a piece of my soul had died, and it's still dead."

Her son is now 42.

"I constantly think and imagine what his life would be like, whether he married and whether I have any grandchildren," Ms Clough said in a statement to a Senate inquiry into forced adoptions.

She said her life has been shattered since her baby was taken.

She married later and gave birth again, but the forced separation of her first born made it difficult to bond fully with her subsequent children.

Suffering deep depression, Ms Clough said she continued to find it difficult to be the mother "I wanted to and should have been".

Catholic Health Australia is prepared to support the setting up of a framework that would allow the victims of forced adoption to get access to personal medical or social work records to help contact lost family members.

It would also support a fund for "remedying established wrongs"

More like ugly present, here in the States - that kinda thing still goes on here, not so much the adoption, as children yanked out of the care of decent parents for idiotic reasons.

We're *still* fighting the Godboldo case, STILL, and despite the whole premise being on the MI Supreme Court docket, they've once again ignored the rules when they became inconvenient and mean to press the case - also despite breaking however many of their own laws...

I'll recap if anyone wishes, but the whole situation is beyond horrific - and the notion that you don't have any right to resist armed assault/invasion under color of law even when it is blatantly, intentionally illegal is a crack in the very bedrock of our whole nation.
The law either applies to everyone, or it applies to NO ONE - having a badge and a uniform shouldn't give someone leave to do anything they please no matter how illegal.

They'd better be apologizing, that is horrible Magon's.

Frem, how is that going? I hope mom wins the case and I hope girl is doing better, do you know how she's doing?

Riona, the kid is... not dealing, that's headed into the pyschic death spiral, and of course she's gone pyschologically iatrogenic, but since there's no trust bond remaining cause the first thing they did (presumably after molesting her) at that hellhole was use catastrophic psychological manipulation to convince the kid that her mother was abusive and irresponsible...
So without even THAT trust bond to work with, and a fear-freeze-catatonia reaction to official mental health personnel thanks to the abuse suffered at their hands - I don't see much hope, IF she is to be helped at all, her mother will have to get her in custody, then overcome the (lets call it what it is) brainwashing, AND the pyschological damage, rebuild the whole relationship from scratch and work at it pretty exclusively - all the while the clock is ticking and it becomes exponentially harder.

From a psychological aspect - they shot this kid in the head, and she's hanging on life support in a vegetative coma with no long term prospective, you understand ?
Now, we can and have recovered and assisted recovers from that, but as I mentioned the success rate is abysmal.

As for the Mom, she's angry as hell, and I am unsure whether she isn't angry enough, or needs to keep a cool head - there's times when anger, when rage, is all that can keep you in the fight, when you NEED to tap your heart, your emotions to go on, and this seems one of those times cause the Goverments whole case of this beginning to end has been "fuck you peons, we'll do what we WANT and you can't stop us!" - which if the MI Supreme Court rules in their favor, will be essentially true... not that they plan to wait for it despite court orders and the law, which they ignore whenever it inconveniences THEM.

Remember what I said about sometimes the only solution you really have is a fatal last stand, trying desperately to do enough damage they have to think it over before trying such a stunt again ?

Well, this mighta been one of those times - remember also that the law dealt in bad faith, promised to place the kid in the custody of the sister, who was right there, and then instead marched her right past her mom to a hellcamp, where she was immediately sexually abused.

Consider well the implications the NEXT time there's this kind of standoff with CPS and DPD, and this bad faith comes back to haunt them with a murder-suicide cause negotiating a surrender is pointless, for which they will deny any responsibility.

There's also a lot of personal and economic flakery on the Police, CPS, and that damn center which shoved the drugs on the kid in the first place, plus ego issues and office politics as well, but there's NO doubt the custody order was illegal, and ZERO chance of altering the records to say otherwise cause I have one of the fucking originals, and I damn well posted it when this case came to light.

Not that I think it's gonna make a damn bit of difference in the end, sadly.

That's all sad Frem, I heard that the girl had some brain differences to begin with. How was she temperment wise and emotionally before all this went down? I'm just interested in knowing, is she completely different now than she was before this whole disaster? I'm hoping time and patience from mom will be helpful for her, sooner rather than later.

Far as I am aware of, prior to this chain of events, the kid was well within what's generally considered "normal", right up to the vaccine-reaction which started this hideous snowball rolling in the first place.

This is one reason I consider it so absolutely important to find the hell out what causes them, who is susceptible, and how to avoid or mitigate it, cause there's no such thing as "acceptable losses" in this kinda thing, you know ?

Alas, some stories don't have happy endings, and I fear this is gonna be one of em - I'd very very much prefer to be wrong about that, though.
