Michigan's prosecuting attorneys association led the push against changing the law in 2001. Today, Ionia County Prosecutor Ronald Schafer, president of the group, says it's hard to remember what the fuss was about.

"I think you can look back and say, 'It was a big nothing.' "

10 years later, opposition to concealed guns fades

A gun rights advocacy group said the past decade has vindicated its position.

"The debate is pretty much over, and we won," said Steve Dunn, a member of the board of the Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners.

Oh noes, chaos and disorder, gunfights on every corner, bloodshed galore, waaah, waah, aaiiie the horror...
Only THERE WASN'T ANY.

*Remember* this the next time such folk cry havoc and blame weapons for the social problems which cause folk to need/want weapons in the first place.

Conversely, what happens when you add more police ?
More lawsuits, more consent decrees, increased expense of federal oversight, skyrocketing corruption and despite this none of that "protection" seems to cross the Thin Blue Line and help the populace.

A new report from the New York Times, however, reveals that despite a 16% drop in the number of officers in the past decade, crime has not risen, but dropped significantly.

All that said, the local Sheriffs Dept here deserves some heavy credit for this - one of the neighborhoods around here, West Willow, is a pretty rough place.
Now, the upper decks start howling for cameras, surveillance, send in the tac teams, roll in the armored car, lock down the neighborhood, show those bastards who' boss, yadda-fuckin-yadda...

And then two officers signed out bicycles and decided to cruise the neighborhood and actually TALK to people, see what their concerns are, what they know, hand them contact numbers - make that personal connection between police and neighborhood that's so very important towards keeping the peace, instead of declaring war ON the neighborhood.

Damn near instant results too, West Willow is turning around nicely, and although at first reluctant, with the usual excuse of "officer safety", the upper deck has shut up about it, grumbling into their coffee over how much funding they're gonna lose by not going all out...
Oh what a pity.

I myself find it ironic, cause the manner in which Nick and Jim decided to tackle West Willow, is *EXACTLY* a clone of OUR policy on another neighborhood not three miles away, but I'm totally cool with that, cause if it WORKS, then by all means do it - it was in part hoping to set an example that we adopted that policy.

So it's not really a black and white issue with this, community, law enforcement and local security *can* work together pro-actively in order to reclaim a neighborhood, we've done it here, and are expanding the bubble, but it takes PERSONAL CONTACT, human-to-human, something no law, no tool, can do for you.

I do however, mock Jim and Nick about their uniforms, since the upper deck decided earlier this year to go with black cause it's "more intimidating", trying to make em look more like stormtroopers... and so when it's ninety fucking degrees out there and they're getting well roasted, our guys in light service grey make fun of em a bit about it, but it's all in good fun cause we also keep a reserve stock of water for the poor bastards too.

Anyhow, one in the eye for the gun-grabbers, although as you'll note, the issues of crime and violence in truth have little to do with guns, and everything to do with social insanity and desperate poverty, but guns are easier to blame than having to face ones own culpability, ain't they ?
