Over the weekend, the Minnesota Rep. turned Hurricane Irene into a campaign punch line, suggesting the recent natural disasters were acts of God.

"Washington, D.C. you'd think by now they'd get the message," Bachmann said at a town hall in Florida Saturday to laughs. "An earthquake, a hurricane, are you listening? The American people have done everything they possibly can, now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it." http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/29/just-a-joke-bachmanns-
hurricane-message-from-god/#more-172755

("Joke" at Of COURSE she meant it as a joke; I'm sure her sycophants know that, right? Or not.

Given Scary Perry's speech which included just that, seriously, I'm sure Crazy Eyes' followers got it. It's a savvy move; make it a joke, the crowd will laugh, but "her" people will nod their heads and say "We know she couldn't say it, but WE know what she meant."

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think I heard similar jokes here before the hurricane hit, albeit not from anyone running for office.

Yeah, many have joked about it one way or another; I just think Bachmann doing it hsa special significance to her followers.

If someone wants to say that in the privacy of their own home to someone that's their business (I think its unsavory but that's just me). But saying that in public when you're running for president is beyond lacking in taste. I find it embarrassing.

She seems pretty happy to joke about people dying and others losing their homes and livelihoods.

How very "Christian" of her.

Spot on, and something that hadn't occurred to me.

I'm of two minds about it; I'm hearing pundits saying it's assinine, just a joke, going after her, etc., etc. from the right, and condemnation (absurd in my opinions) from the left. For me, it's a gambit, as I said, to appeal to her followers, but I hadn't thought of it in the context you did. To do it not just publicly but in front of cameras makes it more egregious, when I DO think of it. Even a bad joke told around the water cooler isn't the same as said in a stump speech by someone running for the highest office in the land. Ergp, whether it's a subtle "call" to her ultra-religious base or not, I think it's wrong to put it in a speech to the public. Thank you; I'd been on the fence about my opinion as to whether it was something to focus on or not, but I think given what you wrote, I'm off the fence. It was inappropriate.

On the other hand, although I find it wrong, I can't imagine finding ANYTHING she says "embarrassing". SHE's an embarrassment to the Republican party and to candidates in general, and shows it all the time, so this is no surprise.

Kind of like asking the crowd "Who likes white people?" at a campaign stop...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

This supports the idea that most Tea Partiers aren't fiscal conservative independents so much as white, racist, batshit evangelical GOPers (The survey which showed TPers less popular than Muslims also tried to see if there was an identifiable group from which TPers arose, and that was their finding, except they didn't used the word "batshit")

As time goes on, the TP looks less and less like Ron Paul and more and more like some kind of religious circus, with snake-handling and all the rest of it. That, BTW, is why Romney will never win: TPers will never vote for a (*hissssss*) MORMON

But one of the things i can't help think of when I look at the US Drought monitor

http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/

is that God (or Gaia, your choice) really, really hates Texas and Oklahoma, and isn't too fond of much of the South. So, explain THAT, Mr Perry!

What makes it even worse is that he had his big Prey-a-palooza, he's called on Texans to "pray for rain", and none of it's done any good. By the standards of the batshit TPers, god clearly hates Rick Perry and is punishing him and the rest of us for his actions. ;)
