I'm hearing more and more about Christie being urged to join the (how many now?) candidates for the Republican nomination. They just can't seem to find someone to agree on! So is he next?

In the midst of Chris Christie's cross-country sweep, the New Jersey governor is experiencing a resurgence in home state popularity.

According to a new survey released Tuesday, the chief executive's approval ratings have recovered from a dismal spring.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind Poll indicates that Christie's approval rating jumped ten percentage points from 44 percent in May to 54 percent in September. Thirty-six percent still disapprove of the governor's performance, but the number is down from the 44 percent who disapproved in May. Well-received preparations for Hurricane Irene and action on state pensions and benefits reform are credited with boosting public opinion over the summer.

Christie's popularity with fellow Republicans rings true in New Jersey where his approval rating is split among party lines with 81 percent of GOP voters saying they approve of the way he's handling his job and 54 percent of Democrats saying they disapprove. Almost eight in 10 Republicans say he's doing an excellent-or good-job as governor and 76 percent of Democrats say it is "only fair" or poor.

And his favorability ratings have flipped. Roughly half of Garden State voters say they have a favorable view of Christie and four in ten say they have an unfavorable opinion. Back in May state budget struggles took their toll on Christie's image–four in ten said they had a favorable view of the governor at that time and 45 percent said they an unfavorable view.

Christie's reputation as a tough-talking, hard-line conservative has resonated nationwide as pressure mounts for him to join the 2012 race for the GOP presidential nomination within the party. Some race watchers wouldn't mind if he ended up with a VP nod, but the governor continues to balk at 2012 talk.

Even GOP South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley tweeted Tuesday, "Lots of chatter. Should Chris Christie run for President?" More at http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/27/poll-amid-national-hea

And here it is again; the tossing out of Perry and hints of Christie as the new rising star:
Quote:

The political insurgency of Texas Governor Rick Perry is on the edge of turning into a campaign that’s all hat and no cattle. Perry’s dismal performance in Thursday night’s GOP debate in Florida may have led to the drubbing he received in a straw poll there on Saturday.

In a stunning upset (if the results of a 2,657-vote poll can be stunning), bombastic ex-pizza mogul Herman Cain – whose candidacy has been about as exciting as cold pepperoni up to now – won 37.1 percent of the vote. Eating his dust were presumptive front-runners Perry with 15.4 percent and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney with 14 percent.

The New York Times blog “The Caucus” reported the following results:

1. Herman Cain, 37.1%
2. Rick Perry, 15.4%
3. Mitt Romney, 14%
4. Rick Santorum, 10.9%
5. Ron Paul, 10.4%
6. Newt Gingrich, 8.4%
7. Jon Huntsman, 2.3%
8. Michele Bachmann, 1.5%

On Fox Sunday, political analyst Brit Hume said: “Perry is about one-half a step away from almost total collapse as a candidate.”

And Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard said: “It was a vote of no confidence” in Perry and Romney, whom he called “very weak front-runners.”

Fox commentator Juan Williams said: “The impression…to the nation as a whole is that this is a very limited conversation among the Tea Party element or the far right of the Republican Party. Not only won't they accept $3 in cuts for $1 in a tax hike, but it's things like the immigration argument that really held center this week, with Perry saying that he thinks children of illegal immigrants should be qualified to get tuition support in states, something 13 other states have, something that's very important to the Republican Party in terms of Hispanic participation going forward. If I'm Hispanic and I'm watching that show, I think, ‘Gee, these people don't like me. They don't like immigrants of any stripe.’” More at http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/Columns/2011/09/26/Monday-Catch-up-Is-Ri

they'll ever actually make up their minds? Think it'll be a close nomination race? Fun to watch, anyway.

KIRKULES

Christie isn't running and even if he was I wouldn't vote for him. He's not a supporter of the Second Amendment and is weak on illegal immigration. Not only that he's fat, Americans don't want a fat President it's to much like looking in the mirror when they're on TV.

Why is he the new star? Did he eat all the other candidates?

I think the reason they're looking for new people to try is because the people they have right now just aren't cutting it.

Yup Riona. They've got so many candidates NOW, they can't have a really viable debate; and it appears that not a one of them could get enough of a majority to win the nomination. So they keep reaching, poor babies. I loved hearing Christie last night talk about how he's sick of the crazies, how the Sharia law is just plain dumb, etc.

Jon Stewart had a ball with it. Get your giggle for the day:
