Gee, that's a real help in lowering the number of long-term unemployed...or unemployed, period!
Quote:

Hundreds of job opening listings posted on Monster.com and other jobs sites explicitly state that people who are unemployed would be less attractive applicants, with some telling the long-term unemployed to not even bother with applying.

The New York Times' Catherine Rampell said she found preferences for the already employed or only recently laid off in listings for "hotel concierges, restaurant managers, teachers, I.T. specialists, business analysts, sales directors, account executives, orthopedics device salesmen, auditors and air-conditioning technicians." Even the massive University of Phoenix stated that preference, but removed the listings when the Times started asking questions.

The concerted shunning of unemployed Americans by prospective employers was a common theme that cropped up in the thousands of responses that poured in when we asked Yahoo! readers to share their experiences of unemployment for our "Down But Not Out" series.

Reader Susan W. said she was being treated "as if it were my fault I was unemployed, regardless of the fact that I had put out hundreds of resumes and applications."

Legal experts told the Times that explicitly barring unemployed people from applying does not qualify under the statutory definition of discrimination, since unemployment is not a federally protected status like age or race. But the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently set out to establish whether employers were discriminating against certain protected groups because they are overrepresented in the ranks of the unemployed, such as African-American and older workers. New Jersey recently passed a law barring employment ads that seek to rule out applications from those who are unemployed.

Even if the practice of weeding out unemployed applicants doesn't fit the legal definition of discrimination, it sure feels unfair for the more than 6.3 million Americans who have been out of work for more than six months to be told they are automatically disqualified for the few openings that are out there. "I feel like I am being shunned by our entire society," Kelly Wiedemer, an unemployed information technology specialist, told the Times. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/job-listings-unemployed-not-apply-
133143362.html

I understand not wanting to hire people who are unemployed but who are over-qualified (because they won't stay longer than it takes for them to find a better job), but this is unconscionable!

I recall Frem has some things to say about that practice.

Oh yes, like how they discriminate by zip code or phone number extension, or the felony-forever mark of doom (which, in a world where EVERYTHING is a freakin crime..) or digging into the prospective employees personal life and taking into account stuff like religion or political bent - I got bounced from a dispatch job for not being "christian" (and mind you, this was one of the SLIMIEST cab companys in the area!) when I could no longer afford to actually drive a cab cause thanks to engler and the fucking taxes I wound up barely even breaking even after a full days work...
And there's a couple employers in Holland who, while none of em admits it, discriminate by political party - non-republicans need not apply.

My spirit-sister just ran afoul of this, bounced from a job she'd held for almost twenty years cause the new manager brought in as the district managers sex-toy realized she wasn't christian, and had her pitched out on her ear over some contrived excuse.

Worse is how you really can't do shit about that, like when Toys R Us fired me for having military-reserve obligations which required my presence on certain weekends - even if you *DID* win, proved that whatever contrived excuse they used to dodge prosecution was plain bullshit and they dumped you for unlawful reasons, you know damn well they'd play nice only for a little while, and then run you out of there in any fashion they could, harrassing you, writing you up, so on and so forth, I mean - would you really WANT to work there after realizing what fucks they are ?

Thanks be I am self-employed, and with a nasty reputation in regards to broken contracts, cause these days I'd be sore tempted to use outright blackmail and extortion against prospective employers given how corrupt and exploitive the whole concept of wage slave labor has become.

Oh, afterthought: "Over Qualified".

Umm, I am in fact *extremely* "overqualified" for the business of podunk residential security on the lowest end of the totem pole, I have mentioned before that one of the security supervisors down at DTW keeps pressuring me to work for them at well over three times what I make over here as a trouble-spotter/behavioral analyst...
(Sit up in the tower and point out folk who are suspicious in movement or conduct)
Which I will NOT do cause I don't like crowds, noise, lights - and feel the whole idea is an infringement on the human rights of the airline customers, besides which there's NO amount of money which'd convince me to work for/with DHS/TSA, no way.

And so I work with my people over here, often as not doing the site three rounds myself to save money, and cause my lazy ass needs the exercise - something I happen to be tremendously "overqualified" for, but you know what ?
I *LIKE* what I do, it makes a real difference for this neighborhood, my turf, as it were, and those assholes putting off this myth have not the humanity within them to realize that sometimes job satisfaction is far, FAR more important to someone than mere income, so long as they have enough.

Maybe if they didn't have a fucking ATTITUDE about it, they'd keep more of those "overqualified" people just by treating them well, as valued employees instead of like unwanted guests.

Just sayin,

It's like a hospital with a sign keeping the sick out.

Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in taxpayer funded bailouts, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?

Yeah, me neither....

Some hospitals would do just that, if they only could.
Yeah, University of MD, I am talkin at YOU!
Or at least sick folk without generous insurance, I for one never quite appreciated my chart being marked as CTD BUNDY.

Good one, Kiki. I think this is just plain assinine and I hope someone can do something about it. Makes me sick, thinking of all those people who've been sending out resumes, walking the streets, working HARD at getting a job for so long, and then to see THIS! Makes me wanna

As for the issue itself and telling unemployed people to not apply, that's rutted up and stupid. As for the equal employment thing, they'll always find ways to wiesel out of it, no matter what the rules are, there are always loopholes in life.

Hehe....

I actually agree with you on this somewhat :)

I can't even get a damn job as a pizza delivery guy because of the killer combination of:

A) My awesome high paying job before....

and

B) My lack of any formal education beyond high school......

Good thing I planned ahead.

I'll find somebody I know who can snag me a job well before I have to worry about it.

For now.....

I just work on my (completely paid for) house 60 hours a week

BTW... I love my General Discussion Peeps. If you feel a strong need to judge me on RWED discussions I've had in the General Discussion, I welcome it, but I also say that they are two different worlds......

And while my core never wavers and though I may say things you don't like in the RWED, I'd never say them in General Discussions and I hope you would do the same.

EDITED TO ADD:

Oh... and all I need is about 10 bucks an hour for 20 hours a week. I'll be able to put money in the bank and my house with that. I'm sure it won't be hard to find.

??? Obviously I didn't post it, so it's okay now to "quote" someone and put in your own words? That's a new low, even for RWED...

It's been done before.... I've been around here way before you were here.

My apologies for offending you, even though I largely agreed with what you said.
