Interesting article. Following up on the "allergy to self" issue in the "Who are they reporting to" thread. Included type 1 diabetes too.

I'm 31, I wasn't around forty years ago or so...Did we really even know the WORD autoimmune then?

I kinda think, like Aspergers wasn't even really noticed until early '90's that these kinda things were always around, we just didn't have a common vocabulary to discuss things until now. I was reading a Japanese Fairy tale the other day, and it talked about a warrior, his wanderlust and some other characteristics, and I thought "Sounds like Aspergers to me." I really think people were a lot more accepting because they had to be, where was another option? My granny is 85 and she remembers people who had ailments and she says she knows they would've been diagnosed with autoimmune... but I also think the spectrum of "autoimmune disorders" has grown as well, with our understanding of the minutia of the body processes...

Why don't the media do more?? 'Cause it's depressing stuff, hah.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Someone did a study on the supposed increase in autism... can't find it again... where they thought to look at 30 and 40-year-olds who may not have been diagnosed properly when young... people who were still living with mom and dad and not doing well, or institutionalized, or homeless. They found an incidence of autism that is about on-par with current diagnoses... about 1%. Possibly there is no increase at all, just more consistent diagnosis.

Also, there was a study on Crohn's disease - thought to be autoimmune- in which refractory cases responded brilliantly to fecal matter transplants (wish I was kidding!). So, maybe not autoimmune.

So first, we should establish whether or not the diseases classified as autoimmune really ARE autoimmune, and whether there is a real increase or diseases were simply diagnosed differently.

I heard a theory that crones and other similar conditions are more common because we keep things overly clean so the body starts attacking itself because it doesn't have parasites and bad things to attack and its built to attack those things, so if they're missing then it short circuits. I don't know if that's valid but I've heard it around. William Wilburforce, the antislavery crusador in Parliament, had colitis back in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so it was around but it wasn't as common perhaps.

I think Aspergers is wayyyyyyyyy overdiagnosed. My best friend came to me the other day and said she thinks she has aspurgers because she's different from other people. I said yeah right Mary, you've always had lots of friends and being different doesn't mean there's something "wrong" with you that needs a label.

And my friend in Browncoats group has a son with Aspergers, I don't dispute that, and she definitely has some tendencies, but she says she has it full blown and I'm hesitant to say so because she has friends, successfully raised three children, is a tutor in maths and all that jazz. Obviously someone with Aspergers can be great in school, but she just seems too "functional". I know she has tendencies and some other mental health issues and I know aspergers runs in her family but I suspect she's just under the line of being diagnosable.

I'm not sure you completely understand Aspergers. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but if your friend feels she doesn't react appropriatly she could be right, and addressing it would make her feel better which is kinda the point of psychoanalysis. There are many different levels of all disorders. The main problem with Aspergers that makes it a problem is that they react differently, and can lead to more misunderstandings and difficulty relating, and even dangers, esp in kids. One of the things most people don't know is alot of them have above average intelligence and special skills. My husband's comes with an incredible memory for history, and he's really good at strategy. Some of the problems that come with it in the facial recognition area, and in social skills can be corrected. Understanding the why and how they think I think is very important, more mysteries of the human maze that if answered will lead to the larger answers in life....

For some unknown reason, I must respond with a paraquoted Buffy song...

(CANTTAKESKY)
I've got a theory,
that it's a virus,
a mutated virus,
no, something isn't right there.

(RIONAEIRE)
I've got a theory,
scientists are dreaming,
and we're all stuck inside their wacky bio nightmare

(DREAMTROVE)
I've got a theory we should work this out,

(CANTTAKESKY, SIGNYM, WISHIMAY)
its getting eerie whats this antibody-junk all about?

(CHRISISALL)
It could be corporates, some evil corporates,
(glances at AURAPTOR and GEEZER)
which is ridiculous cause corporate types just wanna compete fairly and are so necessary and love the earth, and the free market, and I'll be over here.

(SIGNYM)
I've got a theory it could be chemicals!...............

(BYTEMITE)
I've got a theo--

(SIGNYM)
Chemicals arent just cute like everybody supposes,
They got them side effects and make us wipe our noses,
And whats with all the carcinogens?
What do they need all that red dye for anyway?
Chemicals, chemicals, it must be chemicals!
.... Or maybe nanobots?

(eveyone is staring)

(KWICKO)
I've got a theory we should work this fast,

(KWICKO, ANTHONYT)
Because it clearly could get serious before it's past.

(FREMDFIRMA)
I've got a theory, It doesnt matter.
What can't we face if we shoot together?
What's in this place anarchists can't weather?
Apocalypse... we're almost there,
the same old trips, why should we care?

(All but AURAPTOR)
What can't we do if we get in it?
We'll email it through within a minute,
We have to try, we'll pay the price,
It's do or die,

(FREMDFIRMA)
Hey I almost died twice!

(All)
What can't we face if we're together?
What's in this place Fireflyans can't weather?
There's nothing we can't face....

(SIGNYM)
.... except for nanobots. *sigh*

That was amazing, Chris.

I had to look up this song, cause it's been a while.

BYTEMITE

You know, funny segue. I once had a discussion with Sig about whether autism is caused by an increase in prevalence of chemicals, and she pointed out to me that there's some good literature that some aspects of it might be auto-immune.

From what I understand, there are proteins, that have different functions depending on where they're found in the body. And where they're found has something to do with stages of development, like during a pregnancy.

So with autism with gastrointestinal symptoms, there's this protein, that works in the digestive system and the brain but does different things. And after birth it mostly hangs around in the brain (I think?) but sometimes if it's still hanging around a little in the gut it'll prompt an auto-immune reaction because the immune system knows it's not supposed to be there. And even though there's a blood brain barrier that normally keeps out antibodies (you REALLY do not want antibodies in your brain), somehow they get up there and take out the protein in the brain. or maybe en route to the brain. Something like that.

In some people it's noticeable from birth and some people it's less noticeable, but it sounds like that could be the primer that's just waiting for an environmental trigger for full blown autism - if that particular case even needs a trigger.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I would not be surprised if the things in our environment and diet transform us into vials of nitro-glycerine, waiting for the right shock to make us explode with an illness.
