I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Google has announced a "new" privacy statement: your use across all of its services (gmail, youtube etc) will be tracked, the better to serve you up to the advertisers. Can't disappoint those investors!

Twitter just announced a policy of endorsing selective censorship. Some tweets in some nations can be selectively banned.

The US Supreme Court has just ruled that there CAN be such a thing as retroactive copyrights, applying to works which have been in the USA public domain for decades. This was in anticipation of/ to enforce ...

the Anti Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) was just undemocractically passed by the EU. It is a multinational trade agreement with no backing from real people, but good for corporations.

----------

If anyone wants to protest anything, this is it. I have a lot to say on the topic, but I'll keep it short: Patents and copyrights should last for just a few years, and ONLY be owned by the individuals responsible. No 70-year copyrights. No passing it on to the corporation or trust which manages your estate. And all internet communication should be free, with the exception of exploitation of minors.

Agreed. Does anyone think that whoever wrote Shakespeare's plays was writing them in a vacuum? It's not like there weren't other inexplicably literate contemporaries, such as Christopher Marlowe. And they were constantly rewriting other works, putting their own spin on it and using other people's original characters.

People who are so protective of their fictional worlds and characters as to get offended about what their readers might think/write about them in fanworks probably ought to either lighten up, or not publish. Once a person has read what you've written, the contents of it will become part of their creative mindscape and the mind will do what it will with that information. It's unavoidable.

I concur, hell, George RR Martins asshole attitude toward fanfiction (especially when his own writing has devolved so badly) is one reason I punted his ass from my favorite authors list - which happened to Robert Jordan long before that when I met him in Ohio and he was a COMPLETE ass about even how to pronouce the characters names, good grief.

Ironic that I don't even READ fanfiction, but an imaginary product, once shared, does not belong to you within the mind of who you have shared it with, and a special note for those of faith who believe otherwise... to do so means you could be charged for the simple act of your faith being a violation of copyright should you deviate at any point from the printed doctrine - and ain't THAT ridiculous ?

Also, I do believe Google just violated the shit out of their motto, cause such a reaching attempt at control does qualify as evil, all else is a matter of degree but the fact of it does not change.

And as with any ludicrous prohibition, the more they squeeze, the more slips right through their fingers - cause noncompliance is the surest route to slamming a stake through the heart of this stupidity, and they've even carried it out stupidly, people are PISSED about megaupload, and anonymous is grumbling up their sleeve and planning massive retaliation.

I saw we just buycott anyone or anything in support of ACTA and then pirate their stuff far and wide - and even more than that I reccommend we give Eric Flint a microphone and ask HIM what he thinks of this jackassery.

And then there's the likes of Anne Rice, too. I just think a person can't have such a thin skin. If you're going to use other existing ideas, because it's not like vampires are exactly one person's original idea, then you can't disparage people for doing the same thing. You can't get possessive about an idea, it's just silly.

Like I said, it's the old bards of yore. They had these enduring stories, people would add to a story over generations and centuries like a collaborative, parts would become popular or fall out of favour. But none of them thought they OWNED the stories, they made their money by making an enjoyable rendition. In between, they might trade on their professional reputation and do an original story, which would then take on a life of its own. That's the way it's supposed to be.

I agree with you Signe, except that I think that stories written should belong to the writer until s/he dies, and then I'm not as picky. The only time I'm a little more picky is if someone writes a sequel that is trash and the author is rolling in their grave, but even then they're dead and readers can choose to ignore tripe.

I write Tayona stories on fictionpress. I'd be pissed if someone wrote a Tayona story and made money off of it because Tayona and the gang belong to _me. If someone wanted to write Tayona fanfic though I wouldn't be too upset unless they made money off of it. I don't care what they write online for fun as long as it doesn't become cannon. Someday when I publish Tayona it would be so funny to see if people wrote fanfic for it. :)

I can understand this argument. But at the same time, there are places where this kind of thing happens, like in Japan. They have their anime and manga, and then they have these fancomics called doujinshii that the fanartist actually CAN make money off of under Japanese laws. And the thing is, to be honest, doujinshii are often SCARY and fetish-y, because that's what fans tend to write, but at the same time, it doesn't really hurt sales of the original comic. And no one ever really considers the doujinshii canon, it's kind of understood it's not unless the fans and the creator both like it.

If nature has made any one thing less susceptible than all others of exclusive property, it is the action of the thinking power called an idea, which an individual may exclusively possess as long as he keeps it to himself; but the moment it is divulged, it forces itself into the possession of every one, and the receiver cannot dispossess himself of it. Its peculiar character, too, is that no one possesses the less, because every other possesses the whole of it. He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.

Yup. I enjoy a story if it adds a new twist to something I thought I was already well versed in. I had an idea for a vampire story in which part of the "twist" revolved around someone staking a vampire with a pine stake, but it doing nothing at all, except for pissing said vampire off a bit, and ruining one of his favorite shirts. Turns out if you're going to stake a vamp and turn him to ash, you have to use a stake made of Ash wood!

It's always fun to see parts of the mythos get turned on their head. Anne Rice should know this better than anyone.
