Even if i'm a great fan of sci-fi, i'm glad Summer Glau is leaving the genre in favor of mainstream tv shows because sci-fi on broadcast tv is a dead end.

The fans were worried that she had only a silent cameo in Grey's but we were relieved when we learned she would come back in this week episode.
The nurse played by Summer drives Cristina crazy (unvoluntary?); i love it when the jaleous doctor says to nurse Emily : "Can you stop screwing my husband".

The two new sneak peek for upcoming episode, inwhich Summer Glau has a few lines, can be found here :

Apologies for sidetracking from the main topic, but I find it interesting that you refer to sci fi on TV as a "dead end." Historically, I think it's been just the opposite. Genre TV seems to indulge in far more "stunt casting" than non-genre TV (once you're in, you're in) and the rabid fanbase can lead to a higher profile than outside the genre. Yes, this often translates to non-genre work (witness Nathan Fillion), but far from being an end, I think sci fi is great place to start. If anything's a dead end these days, I think it might be soap operas (which have historically been the breeding ground of the future).

I may be harsh but it's based on observations of US broadcast tv since a few years; the truth is, very few sci-fi shows lasted more than 2 years on broadcast tv after Lost and Heroes were gone (the only example i have in mind are Fringe and Supernatural).

But all the hyped shows like TSCC, The Even, V, Terra Nova and all the "smaller " tv shows didn't last long; statiscally, if 60% of the new shows don't last more than 1 year, the percentage is much higher when it comes to sci-fi genre.

Yet, i agree with you, lots of iconic characters come from the genre; as a huge Summer Glau fan, River Tam and Cameron Philipps are a good illustration.
