Back in high school, I heard a rumor that you could get like 98 bucks for a gallon full of aluminum can pull tabs. Since then, I've known a LOT of people who collect the tabs for charities. Though I didn't understand why they did this, the two most common responses were something about the aluminum being purer on the tab than the rest of the can and something else about kidney dialysis machines (I guess the rumor states that turning in the cans will earn time for use on a dialysis machine... I'd always misinterpreted this as somehow the machines used the pull tabs to function.... maybe because they were pure aluminum... I dunno )

When I was living with my mom and step-dad last year, I naturally got into the act. They had been saving tabs for years at their house and at their shop for friends who donated them to charity. Hell... it carried over since I moved into my house last August. I have about 2/3rds of a gallon full of them now.

Since I had so many in one spot and was getting close to having that "full gallon" I did a google search on the idea, remembering the $98 per gallon rumor when I was 15.

LOL...

It's all bogus. I'd be lucky to get $2.50 cents when the gallon is full.

It seems that Ronald McDonald House charities has run with the urban legend and has collections for the tabs. I don't know how many they actually recycle a year, but it must be a ton (More likely 16 tons), because they claim to raise about $8,000 a year with the program.

I guess I'll just discontinue the effort and just give the tabs I've already collected to my parents. I won't tell them that it's all bogus though since they think they're doing a good thing. At least they're recycling the rest of the can too and not just throwing them in the trash.

Sell aluminum wheels, then. I get about $15 to $20 per wheel for old Honda wheels that nobody wants, just for the weight of the aluminum.

Haha....

Not a bad idea Kwick....

On my off days from K-Mart, I'll go out at night with my jack and tire iron and take the tires

I was just saying that I've heard this pull tab rumor for the last 17 years of my life and there's nothing to it.

Meh, in my hobby I have lots of Honda wheels that seem to find their way into my hands. For some reason, every kid with a CRX wants aftermarket wheels, and none of them can be bothered to take their old ones with 'em when they go. So I get rid of 'em, four or eight at a time.

Put 'em on craigslist, and you'll get eight replies saying, "Is item still available? I'm sending a certified check for..." and one offering you $50 for a set of wheels. Sorry, but I get more than that for melting them down.

By the way, you could always melt the aluminum down and make bullets out of it... Load your own.

Aluminum bullets? Kinda soft, mushy, and light weight, wouldn't they be?

But I do remember a guy who cast his own lead bullets out of wheel balancing weights-- he worked at a wheel and tire place.

Light weight, yes, but less soft and mushy than lead, yes?

I would think that in a Zombie Apocalypse situation, one would use whatever one could to make bullets, and aluminum is a good way to practice, being cheap and widely available in everyday sources.
