ama-won-by-offering-gifts-to-minorities-and-young-voters/?hpt=hp_t1

Quote:

"With regards to the young people, for instance, a forgiveness of college loan interest, was a big gift," Romney said, according to The New York Times.

"Free contraceptives were very big with young college-aged women," he continued. "And then, finally, Obamacare also made a difference for them, because as you know, anybody now 26 years of age and younger was now going to be part of their parents' plan, and that was a big gift to young people. They turned out in large numbers, a larger share in this election even than in 2008."

The president's health care reform plan, he added, also turned out support from African Americans and Hispanic voters.

"You can imagine for somebody making $25,000 or $30,000 or $35,000 a year, being told you're now going to get free health care, particularly if you don't have it, getting free health care worth, what, $10,000 per family, in perpetuity, I mean, this is huge," he said. "Likewise with Hispanic voters, free healthcare was a big plus. But in addition with regards to Hispanic voters, the amnesty for children of illegals, the so-called Dream Act kids, was a huge plus for that voting group."

Hello,

Otherwise known as giving your constituents what they desire.

Romney offered the voters a bigger military. And less taxes for the wealthy.

So I guess medical care, amnesty for children, and cheaper schooling rated higher with voters than shiny new tanks, ships, and bombs. And richer rich people.

I can't help but note that this is a no brainer.

Dems offer medical care, amnesty for children, schooling
plus they traditionally have protected human rights ...
don't know if they do now.

From this point of view, everyone making less than $100K
per year would naturally vote Democratic. But they don't!

For example
ST avg income
Voted Democrat
NV 51.2
NY 51.5
OR 51.7
PA 50.0
WI 52.6
Average = $51,400
...
Voted Republican
AZ 48.3
GA 45.6
MO 48.0
MT 41.7
TX 49.2
Average = $46,560
_______________
In my sample, average income in states voting Democratic
is $4,840 higher than states that voted Republican.

I've been meaning to ask this for a while, 'cause I really
can't figure it out. Why do the poorest states vote Repub-
lican???

Anthony: "I can't help but note that this is a no brainer."

It IS a no brainer. To me, 90% of us shoulda voted Dem,
but we didn't!! Almost half voted for the Lord & Masters,
trample-on-us-some-more side.

I suspect that human IQ in the USA has dropped significantly
in the last 50 years. Either that or subliminal influence has
been perfected.

Frem, I watch movies when I can; they are my favorite
entertainment along with computer games.
My TV is outside in storage 'cause ain't cleaned its

I'll use it to watch my old movie CDs.

I have not watched TV (Yuck - pToooie!) in years.

So I take it that Romney is simply upset that the President got a better deal, then? I mean, weren't they both trying to buy the election, along with their parties and their respective superPACs and their millionaire/billionaire private donors?

So President Obama managed to swing the deal for less money, it seems, and that pisses off Romney, because it proves that, contrary to what the GOP was telling us, Obama actually is the better businessman.

This is especially true when many of the won't have to pay very much for it. Folks making $25-35,000 a year aren't going to be paying a lot of federal tax (unless all the Bush tax cuts expire), but they will be receiving some Federal subsidies for health care.

Evidence to the contrary. Rather, it's more that the propaganda has been refined and new tools have enthralled the population, not that the population is dumber.

I don't know about a better businessman. I'd give more credit to his smooth, sultry voice. The voice that says "Trust me. As long as I say 'Look... that's simply not true' you are to believe whatever I say." :)

Just another bullshit narrative from the bullshit narrative factory. Before Romney got his ass handed to him in the election, the narrative was that Obama was absolutely destroying this country. Now that that didn't work, they dump it and go for this hateful reframing of the democratic system. They have no shame.

Hello,

I think presentation matters a lot. Having someone appear charming, articulate, and intelligent means a lot.

I actually think that if Ron Paul had possessed more charisma and been smoother in his delivery, his already impressive following would be much larger.

There you go. Tho' in my opinion, TV has its own share of the blame, as well. I gave up watching NETWORK TV years ago (except for Castle...) because of the "lowest common denominator" attitude of the programmers. NOT to say cable does much better, it's just more entertaining and I have choices there which are somewhat less stupid. Although sitcoms have always encouraged minimal thought process, the influx of "reality shows" (because of their cheap production costs and popularity) has sickened me. Aside from a few shows I enjoy, like Perspective, Falling Skies, Eureka, and a few others (my affinity for sci fi being my excuse for the latter), I, too stick to movies (even bad made-for-TV ones, which I find a good giggle) and On Demand, which gives me the ability to hunt around for better viewing. Tho' yes, I'm a political junkie, so I watch CNN and others, grateful for the ability to change channels when they go off on their tangents!

Rip, if it's only (or even mostly) Obama's "smooth, sultry voice", how do you explain such a vast number of people buying into equivalent lies from Romney and thinking it would be a landslide? I think you could aptly counter right-wing media's "strident, angry voice" for encouraging them to buy into Romney's lies, if you wanted to be fair about who's the better actor. I have serious doubts about EITHER of them being good businessmen, but to say Obama garnered more support merely by saying "that's simply not true", when from what I saw, he said it about things that WEREN'T true, seems disingenuous to me. Were you actually in favor of the right's insistence that we should balance the budget purely by cuts (which wouldn't have balanced the budget anyway), as opposed to an approach encompassing both budget cuts and tax hikes on the rich? Do you not believe both sides were trying to buy the election...or that the same is not true of virtually EVERY election?

Cav, I agree. However, I don't think they've given up on the mantra that Obama is destroying the country, and never will...until and unless the country improves. In which case, I feel fairly sure they will switch to "things would have been better sooner if it weren't for Obama". Works for them.

More than anything, I count it all up to sour grapes...they seem to be reaching in so many different directions to explain away the election results that I fully expect many more excuses to rise from the ashes, essentially as many as their fertile imaginations can come up with. Me, I'm still waiting for all those "gifts" to arrive (since not a single one of them will ever affect ME). I'm not clear on what "stuff" I'm supposed to have wanted from Obama, but whatever it was, I haven't seen it in the mailbox yet...

Dunno about Ron Paul, Anthony. Unquestionably he wasn't the most charismatic of politicians, but I think it just possible some of his stances would have turned off enough people in their own way as Romney's did in his. Just MHO.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Hello,

There is no doubt that Ron Paul's positions, some of which can be best summarized by the average person as 'batshit insane', would prevent him from winning a Presidential election.

I am only saying that he would have done better if he had more charm. And hence, more sway. One need not win all the marbles to shape the future of the game.

Very true, mind that I agree with him prolly more than the rest of you cause some of his positions while not compatible with yours are compatible with Anarchism - but seriously if it weren't for the CONTENT of his speeches, his boring history teacher drone would drive people into a slumber near instantly.

Mitt Romney takes heat from GOP on 'gifts' remark
http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/mitt-romney-takes-heat-from-gop-on-

A handful of prominent Republicans criticized Mitt Romney
Thursday for remarks to donors blaming his defeat on President
Barack Obama's "gifts" to core constituencies, saying it was
the wrong message to send voters as the party tries to rebuild
itself.

"I don't think it's helpful," Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad said ...

Yeah, it was refreshing last night to hear them speak up--for ONCE!--against something idiotic someone in their party said.

I liked Chris Christie's moderate take:
Quote:

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Friday joined the chorus of Republican governors and other officials criticizing Mitt Romney’s assertion that “gifts” from President Barack Obama helped the Democrat win reelection.

“Yeah, sure,” Christie replied when asked by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough if Romney’s comments were “a terrible thing to say.” “You can’t expect to be the leader of all the people and be divisive,” Christie continued. “You have to talk about themes, policies, that unite people.”

Christie did excuse Romney’s remarks, nothing the candidate is still feeling the disappointment.

“Mitt Romney is a friend of mine,” Christie said. “I understand he is very upset about having lost the election, he’s very disappointed. … I’ve lost elections, but never for the presidency. I’m sure it stings.”

“Do I wish he hadn’t said those things?” the New Jersey governor added. “Of course. But on the other hand, I’m not going to bury the guy for it.”

Christie also had advice for Republicans looking to rebuild the party: “Do your job.”

“The leaders of the Republican Party are going to be Republican governors,” he said. “One of the reasons you have 30 Republican governors in America, and why we’re the only organization to add Republican strength — House lost members, Senate lost members, we lost the presidency, we went up from 29 to 30 Republican governors — is because people see us getting things done.”

“I don’t think this is a core philosophical examination we have to go through,” he said. “What this is is about doing our jobs, and people expect that if they give you the privilege of serving. Do your job.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1112/83970.html

Damn. I don't necessarily like the guy's style or his politics, but more and more I'm starting to respect how he handles things, and his ability to tell it like it is. I more and more understand Coulter's remark...

A few of the more rational comments:

The GOP isn’t “just for people who are currently not dependent on the government. It’s for all Americans.” — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker

“I don’t agree with the comments. I think the campaign is over, and what the voters are looking for us to do is to accept their votes and then go forward, and we’ve got some big challenges that need to be resolved.” — Sen. Kelly Ayotte

“I would just say to you, I don’t believe that we have millions and millions of people in this country that don’t want to work. I’m not saying that’s what he said. I think we have millions of people in this country that are out of work and are dependent on the government because they can’t find a job.” — Sen. Marco Rubio

“I don’t think it’s helpful. I guess my feeling is that we need to turn the page, and we need to focus on the future and not make excuses for the past.” - Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad

"It’s wrong, it’s not true. What we’ve got to do is say we want every vote, we want to take care of every citizen in our state." - Florida Gov. Rick Scott

One can't help wondering if some have decided Romney's continued gaffes about the American public are useful in giving them cover to sound more reasonable, since I didn't hear this kind of stuff during the campaign. Or are these people just smarter then most GOP politicians, who seem to be twisting themselves into pretzels to come up with ANY explanation for their massive losses except the real one.

Romney needs to take a pill and chill out--and probably disappear for a while. He keeps showing exactly how out of touch and stuck in his wealthy bubble he is, even after losing! I begin to wonder just how stupid the man is; for a supposedly crafty businessman, he's sure made a habit of sounding truly stupid...AND for showing his amazing ignorance about anything and anyone outside his sphere of ultra-wealthy cronies.

I'm still waiting for MY gifts, by the way...will they be coming parcel post, or UPS?

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Oy, mein gott!

As if the right wing doesn't want "free stuff"? 'Cause, yanno, those wonderful tax preferences for the rich that allow them to pay 14% tax while I pay 38% aren't "free stuff"? Those cuts for Medicare aren't "free stuff" for them?

Yeesh.

This election has been all about "stuff"... and it's been on both sides.

Romney is such a fucking ass. It's very, very, very clear that the comment about the 47% was heartfelt, 'cause here he is again- treating HIMSELF as if he and his crowd are the only ones who have any legitimate self-interest. Everyone else is just a parasite for wanting to better their lives.

I hope he loses all of his money and has to live on the street. Yanno, roll around in the "no money" lifestyle for the foreseeable future, with no chance of rescue. I'll bet he'd change his fucking tune in a hurry.

Yeah, it's kind of humorous, isn't it? If one wanted to look at it that way, the GOP was offering the military-industrial complex plenty of "gifts":
Quote:

Romney’s been pretty specific. It’s right there on his Web site. He wants, he says, to give defense spending “a floor of 4 percent of GDP.” Compared to Obama’s proposals, and the military’s current requests, that’s an increase of $2 trillion over the next decade. That’s a huge amount of money.
]
I'm sure he doesn't see his tax cuts for the rich as any "gifts"--not just keeping the Bush tax cuts, didn't he want to "gift" them with more?
Quote:

But Romney's proposal as he described it - eliminating tax on interest, dividends, and capital gains - would largely help those living on investment income, which does not include many people in the middle class.

The wealthy are the major beneficiaries of low taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest; many middle income Americans don't have investment income. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57530176/romney-pitches-tax-plan-d
etails-that-favor-the-wealthy/
]

Wouldn't deregulation "gift" some big corporations' bottom line, too?

Romney obviously sees everything as a "business" insofar as you give in order to get. Thank gawd he didn't get to run America as a "business"!
