Maybe a kind of a hopeful sign...

In times of dwindling government budgets, the U.S. military, NASA and other federal agencies are increasingly looking to commercial companies for help getting satellites to space.

There is a growing movement among government agencies to start hitching more rides for space instruments aboard commercial spacecraft, rather than building their own completely autonomous satellites. Such a deal is known in satellite circles as a "hosted payload," because a commercial communications spacecraft might "host" an instrument for a Department of Defense (DOD) Earth-observation satellite, for instance.

"I think were at a pivotal point in the DOD in terms of our relationship and the best path forward, and I think what's important right now is an open dialogue," Lt. Gen. Ellen M. Pawlikowski, commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center at Air Force Space Command, told an audience of commercial satellite industry insiders this month at the 2012 Satellite and Content Delivery Conference and Expo here. "You've got a lot of satellites up there and I sure would like to hitch a ride."

NASA, too, wants in on the action.

"We know we can't do everything alone at NASA," the agency's deputy chief Lori Garver said. "We look within the U.S. tax dollar to get you the best benefit by first looking across agencies and then looking to our industry partners."

This kind of commercial partnership also fits into NASA's larger initiative to work with the private space industry on human spaceflight as well. For example, NASA has teamed with commercial companies such as SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corp. to build private space taxis capable of carrying astronauts to the International Space Station. Hello,

If there's ever any hope for Independents owning a Firefly, we have to dream of a day when the Alliance isn't the only one in the spaceship business. ;-)

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

As long as we can get there without hitching a ride with Russian or Chinese rockets I'm happy.

I have no problem in us working with the Russians or Chinese. More cooperation could only lead to getting to know one another better, making it less easy to view one another as "the other", but in more human terms. Aside from which, both have as many brilliant minds as we do, so working together could only further the effort greatly, and who knows what breakthroughs could become possible?

There's a difference between working colaboratively with them and having to use their rockets because we don't have any anymore. If we have our own stuff and we want to work cooperatively with them I fully support such things. As long as we're not beholden to them. I'm sure they prefer using their own rockets as well and wouldn't want to have to depend on someone else in order to get up there.

But Riona, if we have our own rockets, why would we work collaboratively--as in, how collaborative were we when we DID have our own? If we utilize their rockets and work with them, just think how much more could be accomplished than each country having its "own" rockets...that's my point.

Besides, the rest of the world has had to hitch rides and stand back and watch us strut our stuff long enough, in my opinion. Time for others to have the spotlight.

I don't think we need our "own" rockets, and I would rather see countries working together to move forward; I think it would accomplish a lot more and a lot faster than each working independently, and it would foster mutual goals and shared technology. Theoretically at least!

Hey! another success for Republican privatization!
Cut the government budget for something. Then let private companies do it, for profit. That will suck up a slice of that budget as private profit, getting less results. Then cut the government budget some more. Then get the government out all the way. Then discover that the Government needs to use that something, so let the private guys charge for it, at cost plus guaranteed prices. More profits.

Then you discover that you have to pay thru the nose for essential government, even military, functions, without guaranteed results or have have to outsource to foreign countries for American military needs.

Next up: Let's rely on the Japanese and Chinese to build American military ships and aircraft, and maybe we can contract out atomic reactors and
nuclear weapons to the Iranians. Look at all the money we could save, all the PROFITS we could make that way.

This would actually be funnier if we hadn't already outsourced various bits of so-called-homeland-security, I kid you not - look it up.

Yeah, NewOld, I can't argue with that. Given the "space race" was created by the military initially as a "cold war" thing, I can see how budget cutting would affect it now that there is no cold war, but your point is well taken nonetheless. This is, in my opinion, what the right would like to do with EVERYTHING, and one of the reasons I despise that stance.

It could be said, however, that the government fucks up just about as much as the private sector does in some respects, and wastes a lot of money. That just in fairness; it doesn't reflect my opinion of privatizing everything.

We weren't very happy in my house when the space program got cut. I do realize that their are other things that feel more important right now, but a lot of things that we take for granted now were invented because of it. My dad cried when he watched the last shuttle launch, :(
