Not scientists. It's only ten days away now...and their efforts to provide actual facts haven't deterred some from still believing in it.
Quote:

If you want to see a roomful of people roll their eyes, just walk into a gathering of astronomers — or experts on ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, for that matter — and shout, “Mayan apocalypse!” For years now, the idea that the earth will be destroyed in a terrible cataclysm on Dec. 21, 2012, has been bouncing around the Internet and showing up in articles, books and even movies. It’s been the inspiration for get-rich-quick schemes. It’s like Y2K all over again, but at least that episode of end-of-world hysteria was reality-based.

The 2012 apocalypse, by contrast, is just plain nutty. An asteroid is not about to hit the earth. Neither is an imaginary planet called Nibiru. Our world isn’t going to be abruptly flipped upside down like a burger on a griddle. The earth won’t be plunged into a three-day blackout. And contrary to what you’ve been hearing, Maya astrologers never said any of that stuff would actually happen. The idea is so preposterous that a Web search for “Mayan apocalypse” turns up as many spoofs as it does serious discussions.

The truth is a lot more prosaic than what the tinfoil-hat crowd would have you believe. Yes, the Maya had what’s known as a Long Count calendar, and yes, that calendar ends on Dec. 21, 2012. But the delightful thing about calendars — including the one the Maya used — is that they always start over again from zero. Just because we have a record of the Long Count equivalent of last year doesn’t mean the Maya weren’t busy working on next year’s. As for Nibiru, well, never mind. That one was borrowed from the ancient Sumerians, and the original prediction was that we’d get clobbered by the free-range planet in 2003. You might have noticed that that didn’t happen, so the date of arrival was moved up to 2012 to coincide with the Maya silliness. An apocalyptic twofer!More at http://science.time.com/2012/12/12/nasa-versus-the-mayan-madness/

It goes on to talk about people's fears and even a few talking about suicide! He makes a very valid point in saying "The real problem, said Andrew Fraknoi, an astronomer at Foothill College in Los Altos, Calif., during the NASA webcast, 'is that our schools have not taught skeptical thinking, have not taught children to distinguish between fantasy and reality. The real threat in 2012 is the public’s low level of science understanding.'" Boy, is he right about THAT!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I think most people are just having fun with this apocalypse thing.

I do think preparations for more rational disaster scenarios are a good idea, though. In Florida, during Hurricane season, stocking a month's worth of food and water is good thinking.

Other plausible disaster scenarios loom for a variety of reasons. It's probably a good idea for everyone to have some simple food staple that will carry them through several months in an emergency.

O I am glad you mentioned this as I am too lazy/preoccupied to do it.

I'm thinkin' of it as the beginning of a new Era, all positive vibes,
merging with the Age of Aquarius.

For beginners, I hope we'll get a few pleasant surprises in the News
on the 21st. :)

Oonj, I wish I were as hopeful as you. While I think the apocalypse thing is ridiculous, I don't see us heading in a good direction, and I don't see that changing on the 21st.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

My sympathies as well, that's awful, to have your day of celebration turn into one of sorrow.

As I was turning off the TV last night, the documentary "2012: The True Mayan Prophecy" came on (also available in DVD form). It was very educational. It showed actual Mayans--yes, they still exist and are gaining respect and returning to their cultural roots--scientists, and a number of Nobel Peace Laureates like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama, and other religious leaders. It focused on 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate and Mayan leader Rigoberta Menchu Tum.

The crux of it, not surprisingly, is that everyone has misunderstood the Mayan "prophecy". It's not the end date; it's twenty years into a forty-year period of upheaval which we will or will not emerge from as a better world, IF we do the right things.

Took some looking, but I found the essence of what I heard from the Mayan leader (also winner of Nobel Peace Prize):
Quote:

Yes thing are in a state of chaos on the planet at this time. That is a natural occurence when there is a change of cycles. The shift began in 1992. The Mayans say that there is a 40 year period during which things fall apart and then rebuild into something new. We are in that change period.

Mother earth has been abused, polluted and totally disregarded by modern man. The perception is that the earth is a dead thing that is here for us to subjugate and plunder. That is not true. The old cultures realized that the earth is very much alive and what we do to it, we do to ourselves. We could not exist without her help. Mother Earth is alive and rebelling at how we treat her. That is why we are having all the storms, the floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and more. We need to shift our perspective and start giving back to her instead of just taking from her.More at http://ancientspiritwisdom.com/the-real-2012-mayan-prophecy-brings-no-
danger.html

That particular blog is about many things, and I don't recommend it, it's just the first thing I came across that explained in brief what the actual Mayan prophecy IS.

Everything we see in the world around us pretty much fits with what these leaders had to say. I happen to agree with many of their points, I just don't share their sense of optimism.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

As someone who was in Mayaland a few days ago I can honestly and with authority say that the only people worried about this were uneducated Americans who don't know anything about the Mayan calendar. All the real Mayans were just hangin out doing what they always do, work, visit, etc. etc. no big thing, just the next step in time.

If the world was going to end I couldn't think of a better time, I was flying home from my two week vacation to parts warm and sunny, where I swam and sang and met people and had a wonderful time, life was good and why not end on a good note? But here I am, back home, back to the rain and reality. I miss the ship, I had a standing gig in Ron's lounge where I would sing a couple of songs at ten each night and I could swim in the ocean at the ports we stopped at. Life was good.

What happened?

My oldest friend died last week at twenty-five. Mortician ruled the cause as respiratory failure (combo sinus infection, asthma, and I'm guessing some valium, though I haven't heard official word on the tox screen.) Basically, she went to sleep on Thursday night and never woke up. She worked too hard, she never took time for herself, her weight was problematic, she was ill... but I hardly expected it, at her age. No one did.
I suppose the only good news is that I probably won't have a worse birthday for as long as I live. The overabundance of doom and gloom in the air this week will be tough to outstrip.

Signe a chara, I'm really sorry about your mother's passing, its still hard even if you know its coming. How is your DD doing with it, I assume she knew it would happen, but its still hard losing a grandparent, though losing a parent is harder to be sure.

Sorry to hear, dont know what else to say. The young people who have died in my life have been mostly suicicdes and car crashes, and more rarely aids, and two to cancer, which can also be surprising at that age, and now two to homocide, but never just a sudden respritory failure like that.
