How did ATS end?

I know this is covered somewhat by a few posters on the 'well, I cried' thread...But I wanted to use this thread to discuss the very end, what everyone thought it meant. Were they going to win, lose, or does it matter? Could or should the ending have been any different? Here is my take on it, which all stems from Angel's final statement...

Well personally, I want to slay the dragon. Let's get to work.

Angel is the knight who will slay the dragon, and command his troops to fight right up to the end.. However, I believe that the line is a double entendre, when one looks at it from the standpoint of a reference to folklore, the purpose of slaying the dragon is 'to win'. Then we should be able to proportionately substitute Angel's final line to read: "Personally, I want to win"

I like reading it this way, because although it doesn't mean they all survive the battle, Angel goes in believing they have a chance, providing each of us that same spark of warmmy goodness.

I do not believe the series could have ended any other way, they had to go out fighting, that was what the show was always about, 'fighting the good fight' In the end I think it was just about winning another battle, perhaps a bigger one than they had ever faced before, but a battle none the less, not the war. There will always be more wars, and they all knew that.

I am still upset that although I feel things were wrapped up well, if there had been at least one more season I believe we would have been able to explore so many threads that had started at the beginning of the season, only to be quickly manipulated into the space of 1 or 2 episodes as opposed to unfolding over future seasons as originally designed. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with Illyria...we were shown a hint of Fred still alive in some form inside Illyria, and I believe that would have only continued, and they would have used Illyria as a regular team member in the future. I still believe at some point Wes would have died, and had that moment with Fred, but it didn't have to happen at the end of this season, it could have happened down the road. Alyson, Seth, Michelle, and even Sarah, were said to be interested in making return guest appearances during season 6, think how much we missed out on!

HUMBLE

In my opinion, I think they rushed the Angel series to its conclusion. Wrapping up loose ends at warp speed. I was looking forward to more of a battle royale at the end. Maybe with some of the gang from BTVS. Having A.B. in the final eps was cool though. Why did they kill off Fred so close to the series ending and then reincarnate her as Alleria? I think they were possibly going to go one or two more seasons. Something must have happened with the network or cast? Maybe Joss is pooling his resources to making the movie? I don't know for sure. It was a very anti-climactic ending to a good series.

Is it just my imagination, or are ALL my favorite shows being eliminated one by one?

well you have to remember, it was cancelled in like mid filming so they had to end it fast. Illayria possible could of gone on for a couple of seasons. that was one of the things James Marsters(Spike) said " they had all these new stories coming up and planed but they had to cut it off half way and i think the did it well" (not exact qoutes just as i remember it).

HUMBLE

I can't put my finger on it exactly, but the finale and the eps leading up to it just didn't seem to be satisfying to me somehow. I watched the last ep thinking:That's it? I think BTVS ended the way I liked. With good closure, the writing really built up the story into a great final episode that kept you glued to your seat. Lots of great action, fighting against impossible odds and winning. The final ep of Angel was a watered down rip-off of BTVS.

I liked the Angel series though. Thanks for reply BTW.

again, it was never suppoed to end ( well eventually) Joss wanted to leave it open so he can come back to it later. ( which he will because he's joss)then your "angel" will be complete

It DID end. Joss has said, it wasn't Buffy, it wasn't meant to be. There was no big happy ending for Angel, that was not the goal. The only season of angel I can think of even that ended happily is 2, and it was a pretty loose happy. Not like Buffy where every season fully ended and could've been the last, vanquishing the big bad.

BTW, yes, I'm aware it MIGHT have been left slightly more open ended because of the hope for future work, but I doubt it.

i understand why you feel that way, but i still believe that his statement is more about how he and his group do not surrender even though they know they will be defeated. i just feel it is more powerful to have the heroes walk into death without thinking they can win but going only because they are supposed to. not that they want to die, but that they feel there is more to the fight than their own survival. i think angel says "i want to slay the dragon" because he is telling his group that he is the leader; he will take the hardest challenge. it is a statement of defiance, not confidence, in my opinion.
