GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

Hope everyone has a nice holiday. I'll be out of touch until next Sunday, snorkeling in St. John USVI with Madame, her sister and her sister's hubby, so y'all have fun.

And a few last notes on violence.

Since the murder rate has gone down 60% since 1991, along with major reductions in all violent crime and property crime, maybe we should keep doing what we're doing, as it seems to be working.

If you're not happy with that, here's a few more suggestions, mostly long term.

As noted before, improving the mental health system would have benefits, not only in the violence department, but also in general well-being.

Do something about familial child abuse, physical and mental. I've seen several studies proposing that many violent criminals, and just violent folks in general, were abused as children. The actions of some folks I've known who were abused seems to bear this out.

Doing something about school bullying would seem to be advisable as well.

Try to find a way to counter the interest by many young men (and increasingly, women) in the "thug life". Don't know about where you live, but around D.C. we have young men shooting each other over perceived insults and lack of respect.

End the "war on drugs". Legalize and tax drugs. End the drug turf wars by taking away the motivation. use the money saved on enforcement and raised by taxes to provide treatment and dissuade use.

Better physical security at schools couldn't hurt, not only to keep out gunpersons, but also child pedophiles. Don't think a policeman at every school is the answer, but controlling access with locks and stronger doors seems worthwhile.

And, although it will have no practical effect, banning the sale of "assault weapons" (whatever those are) would make some people feel more secure.

Discuss among yourselves.

See you next Sunday.

Bye

As someone who just spent two wonderful weeks in the Caribbean I wish you well and hope you have as good of a time as I had.

Some good suggestions.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Gawd, I'm jealous of you both. Although I'm torn; I ADORE this stormy weather, especially since last year was a dry one, so it's a toss up. Of course, it's a moot point anyway, as we couldn't afford it! I'll just enjoy the thumping of rain in my outback, and the roar of the wind in the redwoods.

The suggestions you made are goond ones, but given the number of MASS SHOOTINGS has been so frequent in the past few years, I still think it's something that has to be in the mix. JMHO.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.
